Butterscotch Pudding

Still one of the best hamburgers in the Bay Area. Ask for your burger to be served on an ACME baguette. It makes the burger come alive. Cooked to medium rare perfection and served with fresh condiments including home made pickles. Sometimes reservations are hard to come by. But if you saunter in at around 1 pm there usually is room at the bar Ohh and did I mention the fries? Like me, you may dive into them first. Hot, salty, crispy. Perfection. Matt says if you are taking a stroll around College and Claremont, stop by the Wood Tavern for some culinary perfection.

Warm and cozy with a primo spot on College Ave. The staff is nice and attentive and offer great recommendations. Started with the soup which was so good, I think it could have been elevated with a nice sourdough or focaccia. I had the fish which was great, perfectly cooked and seasoned served with a tomatoey sauce and couscous which was a nice touch. God mom had mushroom pasta which was so full of mushroom flavor it was heavenly. Ended with the apple fritter even though I didn't want dessert, but not a crumb was left. God mom brought a bottle so I didn't try any of their wines or cocktails, but hope to next time I'm home. I do wish there were more non meat dishes, but the menu is pretty solid and should have something for everyone.

I've always driven by Wood Tavern and finally got the chance to go for our fifth wedding anniversary. Because you're supposed to celebrate year 5 with the element of wood, what better place to celebrate than at Wood Tavern? The vibe here is warm, inviting, and familiar. You can tell there are many regulars by the happy greetings and friends saying hi to each other at the bar. The staff is super nice and sat us at a sweet tucked away table by the window that also came with a heater. It was nice to people watch while we sipped our drinks and ate. The highlight of our meal were the drinks and the charcuterie items. I got the espresso martini and the manhattan, and both are well balanced & smooth. The charcuterie boards are so fun to eat and I loved that we got to try four different items. The duck breast and burger was cooked to perfection and we even got a little sweet treat at the end of our meal to celebrate our anniversary. Thank you Wood Tavern for making our evening special!

For years this place continues to be amazing! Thank you Wood Tavern! The staff is wonderful! Their food is delicious! And their drinks are perfect. Bartenders that know what they are doing, always! Wonderful use of space in this small, but mighty restaurant!

Came here with friends for lunch and we split the four sandwiches. The fried cod sandwich was the best. The bread on all of the sandwiches were amazing. Loved the flavors in this cod sandwich! The pork belly was flavorful but a bit dry for me. Always love pastrami and this one didn't disappoint! Generous portion of pastrami! And can't go wrong with the burger. The fries were soooo good. Will have to come back more often for lunch!

Butcher block and Cheese Board selections. Whiskey Laced Chicken Liver Pate, Smoked Duck, Le Braison, Witherbrook Blue.

This cozy tavern restaurant is a delicious find tucked away in Berkeley. They offer a seasonal menu, but there seems to be a structure or theme to it. So be ready for a delightful surprise everytime you visit. They had some meat / cheese board offering, which I highly recommend. You can pick and choose from the butcher block or cheese board section. We got the Whiskey Laced Chicken Liver Pate, Smoked Duck Breast, Le Braison, and Witherbrook Blue. They also came with biscuits, apples, almonds, pickled veggies, and apricots for pairing. So good and a great table opener. We also got the Grilled Ribeye and Grilled Porkchop. Both were super good and well made. The first bite into the edge piece of the ribeye was so good, slight char crisp brought out the taste. The porkchop was smothered in savory sauce. Both of which were fantastic!! The people here are so amazing. You can tell they want to make you have a special night! From booking the reservation down to wrapping up the meal, they made sure we enjoyed our dinner experience - and we sure did! If you haven't already, get yourself a reservation and have your next celebratory dinner with Wood Tavern.

Great vibe and delicious food. Make sure to do a reservation otherwise you will be seated at the bar. The quality was phenomenal. Had lunch. Try the pate

We tried to make reservations, but they said the earliest was 8 PM and it was only 530 so we didn't want to wait. When we got there, there were many open tables, but we decided to still sit at the bar. The restaurant has a nice old school charm. The wine and liquor list is expansive. We both got the pork chops and the bartender warned us it would be a good 35-40 mins so he suggested an appetizer. We got the brussels sprouts and it was so good. It had a unique mix of apple chunks, bacon chunks and apple vinaigrette. The pork chops is a hefty portion so be prepared to be super full or have take home. It was nicely prepared, tender and juicy inside and paired with the sauce with spinach, sausage bits, potato chunks...it was a very delicious meal! The prices were a little expensive but the quality and taste was worth the price. The bartender was friendly and served us very well. Great experience!

Hot Pastrami Sandwich

The menu is pretty limited. I tried the Hot Pastrami sandwich. It was too fatty for me. I couldn't finish it. Their bar didn't handle sangrias, so I ordered the spritzer which was made with a pinot. Not bad, but not great either, and not cheap by any stretch. Four of us at lunch had two drinks and 4 entrees and the bill was around $170. That seems pretty steep for a very limited menu and bar. Our waiter was great. Very personable and helpful. He was the highlight of our lunch. We were there mid-week at opening and the restaurant was VERY loud. I found myself yelling into my brother's ear, who was sitting right next to me, so that he could hear me.

Guillermo R.

One of my all time favorite restaurants in Oakland. Been chomping on their food for a long time and like a great wine it gets better. The pastrami sando is my go to with a glass or f Turly zin to wash it down. The salads are seasonal as is the soup. The menu is solid from the fish to pastas. The staff are friendly and the bar staff are just awesome. It always a treat when I find myself here. I don't make it to dessert too often cuz the cheese plate is great to finish your wine with.

Sorry that was a Crab Salad. What was left of it

The Lamb Chops are back, but I heard it's only for a limited time only. The fixins alone taste great as well

Ask the Community - Wood Tavern

Is there only street parking?

Yes, street (metered) parking only. But I have managed to find free parking in the neighborhood off Alcatraz and Lewiston.

Do they have gluten free burger buns?

Sorry, but I don't know that answer

How many people can fit in there to eat dinner?

Call the restaurant and ask them. If you have a large party you will need to make a reservation in order to be accommodated. It's a popular and busy place because the food is excellent

Is it noisy or quiet?

Noisy

Do they have outdoor seating?

No they do not.

Any vegetarian or vegan options?

Not really even the seared scallops had pancetta in the sauce

Do you take reservations? I have tried calling the past 2 days with the # listed on your website,…

I have used Open Table to reserve a seating at Wood Tavern. Good luck

Proof of vax/booster required to dine indoors?

Yes, they require proof of vacine

Are they still doing take out?

Yes. Just got take-out last Thursday.

Is there outdoor seating?

nope but their sister restaurant, The Wolf, does! Both are delicious!!

Did they take reservations?

Yes. Use Open Table or call a week in advance for best times.

Are you offering any sort of dine in as of yet?

Was there last night -- March 9 -- and they're doing takeaway only right now.

Happy Hour 🍸?

No, and the bar can fill up fast, too.

I've had their Spicy Hog, steak with mushroom, a few Cubans, but the one that I always come back to is "The Balls" sandwich. First off, this sandwich is massive, so be sure that you come here on an empty stomach. These beef meatballs are seasoned to perfection and bursting with flavor. The balls are covered in their red sauce with provolone and Grana Padano, which gives it that nutty and salty flavor that pairs extremely well with the meatballs and baguette. All the juices and cheese just get soaked up to perfection. The baguette bread they use is supplied by La Farine, which is just a few meters away from each other. Just putting out there that La Farine is hands down one of the best bakeries in Oakland, so it makes sense that this sandwich would be so dang good. I'll be honest that I'm not a big fan of the chips or those chips in general and could be fine with just the sandwich. If you are going to have any sandwich to eat here first, I would highly recommend you try "The Balls" because I promise you will not be disappointed. I will always say that the dozen or so times I've been here, the staff are always so friendly, and the atmosphere is very down to earth. The price of their sandwiches is in the $20 range, but the quality and portion make it totally worth it.

No one came and instead quickly several more tables cleared out. Rather than see a few minutes of the England-Serbia World Cup match, I saw a bunch of people up close paying lunch bills. Don't come in solo expecting a side table.

The restaurant space is well-lit, has plenty of indoor seating and seems suitable for a date or casual get-together with friends. My partner would give the food a five-start rating for its simplicity, generally flavorful, with spicy sauces and THE BEST guacamole! He had the Korean spare ribs and mash potatoes. He found the ribs to be fall-off-the bone tender, with potatoes that were more whipped than mashed alongside a carrot puree. I, on the other hand, had the New York Steak and au gratin potatoes. Though I wanted to enjoy my entree, I found the New York Steak to be unfortunately chewy and with too much fat. The au gratin potatoes could have had more crispy layers but tasted mediocre. Though I'd only rate this first experience with three stars. the service staff DID win us over and could potentially be the reason I'd be open to giving it another try.

Kitchen Story nails the Korean-brunch mashup better than anywhere else I've found. The Kitchen Story benedict with millionaires bacon is a standout... crispy sweet and spicy bacon with poached eggs and hollandaise over asparagus and ciabatta toast, plus a side of crispy fried Yukon potatoes. The tornado eggs with galbi fried rice with that glossy brown gravy is another favorite, and the popcorn chicken (yes, served with actual popcorn mixed in) is a fun, addictive appetizer - or my 6yo favorite dish. Don't sleep on the stuffed French toast either, loaded with fresh fruit and a nice hit of powdered sugar. A few practical notes: this place is small and popular, so weekday visits or joining the virtual Yelp waitlist before you arrive is the move if you want to avoid a long wait. They also have a big TV that made watching World Cup games here a great bonus. My favorite detail, though: at the end of the meal they bring your receipt tucked inside a little book instead of just handing you a slip of paper. Such a charming, unexpected touch that makes the whole experience feel more special. Come hungry, come early (or waitlisted), and don't skip dessert-for-breakfast options. Highly recommend.

As soon as you walk in, you're hit with the smell of a campfire from the oven. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous with an Art Deco design. The ambiance is cozy but elevated. Benedict (buttermilk biscuit, dungeness crab cakes, marinated swiss chard & beet greens, herbed hollandaise, poached eggs & mixed greens): I'm not a huge benedict person because they can feel heavy, but this one was fantastic. I loved the textures and flavors of the crab cakes pairing with the greens and vegetables. It felt balanced and not too creamy or exhausting to eat. It definitely stands out from the run-of-the-mill brunch benedict. Vegetable Hash (roasted sweet potatoes, garnet yams, sunchokes, cauliflower, cremini mushrooms, celery root & onion, savoy spinach & poached eggs): This was also delicious and also set itself apart from the standard brunch hash. I loved the different vegetables in it besides being just potatoes and onions. The mushrooms and root vegetables worked really well together. Everything was well-seasoned. I'm glad we ended up choosing these dishes even though neither were my original top choices (I decided on the menu with my friend). It made me feel like you can choose anything and it'd be a banger. We were quite full from these dishes, and we forget we also ordered beignets to come out last. They were fluffy and mostly air (but not in a bad way). The service throughout the meal was good. We were checked on from time-to-time and our waters were refilled, although I wish the water glasses were a little bigger. One small thing to note was that we were given the check while we were still eating, even though the restaurant was still seating people despite it being close to closing time. Unsure if/why we were rushed like this. Overall, this was a memorable brunch spots I've been to in the Bay (dare I say one of the best?). We left smelling like a campfire. I would recommend it.
