AAA Desert Nightmare On Friday May the fifteenth 2026 the American Automobile Association endangered the health and safety of two people over a technicality. A wrong turn leaving the El Mirage Off-Highway Recreational Area left our 2017 Chevrolet Express van hung up on a dirt berm. This is a condensed version of how two people in their seventies, spent the next three hours stranded in the desert. In eleven years as a AAA member, I had never asked for road side assistance or tow services, but we needed it now. A young lady answered and questions and the conversation quickly turns south. Does your van have seats in the back, windows? No? You have a Commercial Vehicle which is not eligible for Road-Side Assistance. We have owned this van for five years and paid our state "Non-Commercial Personal Use" Express van registration fees the local AAA facility. No one had a problem taking our money. No one told us we were ineligible for what we pay our AAA membership for. So I inform the young woman that Chevy and GMC Express and Savana vans, windows or not are the same platform and chassis the ONLY difference being the emblems and how is a "Personal Use Only", non-passenger van deemed commercial by anyone with any common sense? But she had her AAA Rule Book and could care less that two elderly people were trapped in the desert ten feet from a paved road with only in the clothes on their backs for the heat of the day and with no warm clothes for the post 10:00 PM night-time desert cold. What DID matter to her was what the AAA instruction book said. So I asked to speak to a supervisor who reiterated the same it's in your contract nonsense and hung up. After a bit he did call back, seemingly concerned about our situation and did extend some assistance to which I did thank him for. Back to our local young woman who again informed us of our ineligibility but their local towing company would contact us and we could pay them out of pocket. Charming. The next calls was from the AAA's local towing company dispatcher who told us it would be an hour and a half to a two hour wait and she would call us back when everything was arranged. She called back as promised. I could hear her as she left her desk to speak to her tow truck driver about us. But when she returned, she was surprised to find our "rescue tow job" had suddenly disappeared from her computer. Confused she wondered how that could happen, "someone had to pull that job, jobs just don't disappear" she said. I have no definitive proof, but based on the tone of the evening's conversation and indifferent attitude towards our predicament by your local employee. The sudden disappearance of our Tow-Job seemed like an incredible coincidence! Was the job was pulled out of spite for being over-ruled by the night supervisor? Or did a lightning bolt from out of the blue suddenly strike down just this particular job on this particular computer? Concerned for our safety, the tow truck company people did try and assist us. Meanwhile we contacted our vehicles insurer, State Farm. They strangely had NO PROBLEM with our vehicle and called back with a promise to send someone out ASAP. Then, just as we received the call from the State Farm, a good Samaritan came by and offered to pull us out. It took less than a minute to pull us far enough up the berm to gain traction and we were on our way. Yes, it was that easy. In the midst of all these conversations, it was suggested we join High Desert 4X4 Recovery on Facebook. They contacted us on our way back to Victorville and took the time unlike out paid for road side assistance to make sure we were safe. They provide FREE help to those stranded in the desert. What your organization did to us was beyond safe or fair and I do not want this arbitrary technicality to endanger anyone else. That one of your employees felt justified leaving two elderly people stranded in the desert does not speak well of your organization or of her personally. Your "Van" rules are capricious and illogical. They also have the potential to get people hurt. I read AAA's on-line rules concerning Pick-Up truck and Vans. California deems Pick-Up trucks Commercial Vehicles. Do you deny assistant to pick-up truck as you do to vans? We were discriminated against and denied assistance illogically. How many AAA customers use their vans for NON-COMMERICAL activities such as transporting personal motorcycles, personal Quads, personal Mountain-Bikes, or for camping, etc. It is illogical to categorize every van without rear seats as a commercial vehicle and potentially put people in danger. Me and my wife have AAA in California. AAA sent a letter to my wife the envelope say Deliver Only To her. The return address 17900 N. Laurel Park Drive,, Livonia, MI 48152. That's the AAA Life Insurance Company. It appears AAA is behind the husband's back trying to sell life insurance directly to the wife. We make decisions together, and the AAA is not term insurance I believe it is and expensive policy. I don't understand buying life insurance for a baby, or a n expensive life insurance policy for a spouse. I do understand unethical behavior that I believe AAA is engaging in. I also noticed AAA started putting limits on their guaranteed cost of replacement homeowners insurance so AAA no longer has an advantage over any other homeowners insurance I'm aware of. AAA, to my understanding, AAA contracts out to different companies for their tow service. Not all companies are good. Make sure you are being towed to an authorized AAA shop. Have pictures of your vehicles before they tow including all the tires. Our tow truck driver did not put on the spare. He filled the tire and we followed him to a shop, which we found out was not part of AAA approved. My husband did not want to buy a tire from them so wound up putting on the spare, at a $30 cost. We were not paying attention and our lug nuts were switched. We do not have pictures of the tires before we got to the shop so we really have no way of proving the switch. If I ran my business the way the Chatsworth CA office does, I'd have no customers. Two incidents; 1) came in for registration renewal about a month ago. One person doing vehicle registration renewals while three were doing nothing. When I asked them why couldn't they assist in cutting down the wait, they said the could only do "insurance" and if they helped me, they could loose their jobs. Very efficient way to run your business? I think not. 2) Today, went in to renew four (4) motorcycle registrations. An exact replay of the renewals I did last year without issue. After waiting my turn, they told me they would only do three of the four!!! No prior notice, no explanation except that that was their policy. Who's policy? The incompetent manager overlooking her understaffed workers as a vulture would its prey? Why the crappy service? Too many people waiting so move along. Tough! In the time I argued the point, they could have processed all my renewals. Trying to call AAA corporate to make a complaint is about as pleasant and rewarding as mowing the lawn. They have it fixed so you "cannot complain about the office service". I was given the royal runaround trying to get a manager on the phone. It would be better to use DMV and save the exorbitant annual fees AAA charge. It is quite obvious why the manager didn't seem to care about being held to account. read more

Always had a good experience with AAA in the past when it came to roadside assistance. In this case my car is at a service center and I needed it towed from one location to the other. While at work I set up a tow truck with AAA to do just that. I spoke with an AAA representative to ask what needs to happen since I am at work and still need to pay for my cars services at the Kia Service Center. We arranged for the tow truck to get to the service center at a time I'd be able to have gone down and paid by. From there no other issues, he said the tow truck will get there and tow to the new location. I confirmed that I did not need to be there, he said no I did not. I go to the Kia Service Center to pay my bill, and let them know that AAA will be coming soon, they said no problem, have them ask for Robert who will take care of everything. I texted the AAA service line, asked for an agent, and let them know that when the tow truck gets to the Kia service center to ask for Robert. They said they will pass that info along. Hours later I thought it was strange that I never heard anything in regards to my cars tow being completed, or even started. So I called AAA and they said it was cancelled. After they looked into it they said the driver couldn't find me and my car. I told them they were supposed to ask for Robert as indicated by my text. They said they see the message but I had to be there. I told them that was never stated ever during my multiple in person and text communications. I had told them that I couldn't be there and was told that is not a problem. And now it's a problem, which I understand the policy as to why I would need to be there, HOWEVER if they would have called me when this happened I could have solved this issue by going down there or arranged another tow truck to come if that one couldn't wait 10 minutes. Now because AAA never let me know and I had to call them to see the status it is too late in the day and I will have to be without a car yet again and lose credibility with the service place I was moving to by ensuring them my car would be there today. When the driver arrived, he had a noticeably bad attitude and spoke with an unnecessary tone. After everything, we didn't get home until 8:30 PM, almost five and a half hours after our initial call. In the last 12 months, I've put 16000 miles on the Sprinter van (including passing through Southern California) and 2000 miles on my little mini-wagon. I am a member of AAA because it gives me peace of mind when I travel knowing that if there's a roadside problem, I have help just a phone call away. I stupidly ran out of gas in the middle of Missouri, thinking that there would be another station any moment now. Nope, the car shut down and would barely even move to the breakdown lane. AAA to the rescue, bringing me three gallons of gas which was enough to get to a proper station. (And yes, I tipped the guy $10 for not making me feel any more like an idiot than I already did.) A flat tire after I ran over a pretty good-sized screw on the interstate near Ellenton Florida. The "low pressure alert" appeared on the dashboard and I was able to get the van to a secure and shaded parking lot where I called AAA. A technician arrived 40 minutes later, jacked up the van and put the spare on for me. Sure, I could have done it myself but I'm paying for this service and it helped. And then, there are the discounts on travel including hotels and such. I got my International Drivers License at AAA. And I have gotten an oil change at the AAA garage here in Charlotte. Naturally when your father repairs cars your car and your Mother's car never get serviced. They are handy when you have a flat tire or something minor. I sent photos, videos, emails, and all the documentation requested, yet my calls and emails went ignored. I even reached out to his manager, Jeremy Thuve, with no response. It wasn't until I filed a formal complaint with the California Department of Insurance that anyone decided to acknowledge my situation. Completely Contradictory & Unprofessional Handling When I finally spoke with Jeremy Thuve, the experience went from frustrating to disrespectful and cruel. Instead of addressing my concerns with understanding and professionalism, he called me with an attitude, was extremely rude, dismissive, and argumentative. He constantly spoke over me, refused to let me explain my situation, and lacked any empathy for what I had been through. I lost basic necessities--I had no power or water for nearly five days, the air was filled with smoke, my asthma flared up severely, and I had nowhere safe to stay in LA because hotels were completely booked all the way to San Diego and Orange County. Instead of acknowledging the reality of my situation, Jeremy insensitively questioned why I didn't just stay in LA, as if that was even an option. How does AAA decide how someone should experience a natural disaster? The city was burning, people were breaking into my building, stealing cars, and I was scared for my life. Complete Failure in Inspection & Handling of My Losses I informed AAA that my entire home smelled like smoke, my belongings, furniture, and clothing were damaged, and I had moved out of state due to the trauma of this experience. Josh assured me that someone would come inspect the damage, yet no one ever showed up for an entire month. By the time AAA finally responded, I had already packed my home and hired movers to relocate me to safety near my family. Jeremy then demanded that someone inspect my packed-up belongings, as if I was expected to unpack every single box just for their convenience--ignoring the stress, emotional toll, and effort it took for me to relocate. To make matters worse, Jeremy decided to personally assess what he thought should be covered. Despite my patio furniture, personal belongings, and home being covered in ash and smoke damage, he had the audacity to say he only considered my egg chair as damaged--completely dismissing my other losses. Since when does a claims manager get to decide what is considered "usable" when I am the one living with the damage? This experience with AAA has been emotionally exhausting, mentally draining, and financially harmful. I am a single woman of color who was alone during one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. Rather than receiving the compassion and support AAA claims to offer, I was met with disrespect, indifference, and obstacles at every turn. AAA failed me when I needed them most. If this is how they treat long-time customers in a disaster, I can only imagine how many others they have dismissed and ignored.
