However, after receiving contradictory quotes from other companies, Radon Systems revised their assessment, acknowledging that the slab could indeed be accessed from the basement and I booked a time with them for an installation. When the installation date came around, the tech and a trainee arrived and told me that the system would be tough to install and couldn't be done without removing a dryer exhaust vent that was blocking the path that the radon system would need to take. I was told that the dryer exhaust vent was taped in with a type of tape that wasn't designed to come off and I might need to hire a handyman to remove the pipe and schedule a new install. This was frustrating as the original estimator had not mentioned this at all and after waiting a month for this install date and making arrangements to be at the house during the installation, I now had to wait almost another month for a new installation. Also, I found out later that the tape came off the dryer vent very easily and could have easily been removed in a few minutes to allow the installation to proceed on the original date it had been scheduled. Then, when the next installation date came, the tech that came was just the trainee from the first installation attempt, who took roughly 12 hours to complete the installation (what I found online seemed to indicate that a radon system installation job usually takes 3-5 hours) and needed to call a more experienced tech for help countless times throughout the day. There were numerous issues along the way, including problems with wiring the system, and after he said that the job was finally done and left, we noticed that the radon exhaust pipe in the basement was incredibly loud and actually was not even connected to the part of the system drawing in radon from the sump pump. Although the tech was very courteous, a hard worker, and was trying his best, this was clearly a job that required someone more experienced and it's frustrating that the company decided to send him by himself, especially when this tech admitted that this was his very first solo installation of a radon system in a residential house and both people that had looked at the house earlier from Radon Systems said this would be a tough job. After talking with Radon Systems again, the owner sent another tech to correct the issue of the pipe not being attached. He then said he would be back to fix the electrical, which had not been wired well, but it was only after multiple follow ups that a tech was finally sent out. I was then told I would get the results of the radon test within a business day or two. After almost a week passed, I followed up and they finally sent the results. Although the system appears to be working now, the path to getting here was not pleasant and could have been avoided by Radon Systems prioritizing customer service and satisfaction and not just trying to cut costs by sending a brand new tech to tackle a tough job.

Although it was mostly intact, there were a few places where it had gotten torn and had some pieces hanging down. I contacted Lyle Environmental after reading good reviews about them online. They gave me thorough instructions on how to safely collect a sample of the tape so they could test it to determine if it was indeed asbestos tape. After I dropped off the sample they tested it and got back to me very quickly with the results: unfortunately, it was definitely asbestos tape. They described my options: removal, encapsulation, or doing nothing, and told me they could send someone to look at the ductwork and prepare a bid if I decided on either of the first two options. After I contacted Lyle and told them I'd like to have them deal with the tape, a representative came to my home and looked over the ductwork. He recommended removal of the tape where it was torn and encapsulation with a product called LagKloth where the tape was still intact. Lyle's bid for doing this work seemed quite reasonable so I made an appointment for the work to be done. The crew showed up on time the morning of the appointment, got straight to work, and completed the job within a few hours. My experience with Lyle was overwhelmingly positive. Every person I dealt with, from the office manager who took my initial call, to the person who looked at the ducts and prepared the bid, to the crew who did the asbestos remediation, was courteous, professional and conscientious. They answered all my questions and did the job for a reasonable price. They completed the lab work and got me on their schedule quickly. Moreover, several months after the work was completed, I noticed the LagKloth had become detached from the ducts in some areas. These areas are made of wood and had been painted years ago with what is most likely a lead-based paint, which Lyle thought is probably why the LagKloth had loosened from them. Lyle sent a technician out who fixed the problem at no extra cost. Lyle Environmental does good work and stands behind it--I highly recommend them!
