We are in the process of remodeling a recently purchased condo in Galloway. We needed to have the gas fireplace serviced. We called Specialty Gas House and found them to be a very honest establishment. We had a competitor in first that claimed we needed a new gas fireplace as the pilot was leaking and a replacement was no longer available. They told us to be sure to not turn it on. Felt a little suspicious. We were right. Specialty Gas House told us that the pilot was fine, they tweaked a screw, and thoroughly checked out everything else and our fireplace is now functional and works perfectly fine. This is the second time I have called Specialty. The first time, the fireplace would not ignite at all. The first company I called said it was too old to repair and a new burner would be $5000. Called Specialty for a second opinion. The tubing was clogged and needed replaced. They took care of it , cleaned it up, and lit the pilot for us. Very reasonably priced. Left a voice mail and received a call-back the next business day. Became concerned when my appointment (scheduled at the end of the day) came & week so followed-up with office. Once again, service number when straight to voice mail so called sales office. The gentleman was helpful and explained there was a delay. I was fine with his reply, but a proactive call would have been nice. Cliff, the service technician, is about as good as they get! He is professional, knowledgeable, tidy and efficient. When my fireplace pooped out, I called this place based on Yelp reviews. I was greeted with a message saying it was a busy season and we'll get to you when we can. Okay, I figure a few days is no big deal. Two weeks pass and I reluctantly call back to follow through on my end. When I spoke with someone, they said they got the message and no real explanation or apology for not calling back. *red flag for me* They wanted $95 to come out and assess what the problem was and would come out in 3 weeks. I'm not waiting a total of 5 weeks to get that fixed. I called another place and got an appointment 3 days later and paid $110 even though they were willing to come out the following day. The gas log set in my daughter's house gave out last week, before we came to Columbus to celebrate Christmas with family. Replacing it became my primary mission for this week. My daughter had done some leg work by visiting one supplier who asked for detailed measurements and photos. I followed up with both and a visit, only to be told that we'd have to mover the fireplace inlet from its location on the left side of the fire box to the right wall. Yikes! Very expensive plumbing call. While the inept sales agent was collecting info for me, I looked for another log supplier, and found Specialty Gas House, not too far away. Once there, I got excellent help in evaluating the existing gas log set-up, choosing a replacement, and installing the new kit. Rob, the owner, and his helper, Jared, listened as I explained what we had and shared photos of the existing burner. I bought a "YE" or Live Oak set. Took it back home, read the instructions, and discovered I needed a line to connect the gas jet to the new burner. I called Specialty Gas House, got instructions on the fittings I'd need, and headed there with my son-in-law. (It helps that he is an ME and totally competent beyond my skill set.). I needed the gas line grounded, and gas fireplace inspected at 2 of my condo units. I also needed a gas stove hooked up to the existing gas line. The rep who scheduled my appointment for a week later said that they didn't like to ground gas lines, but that they would do it for me. The day before the appointment, the owner called to say they cannot do the work (even though all had been discussed with the person who set my appointment a week ago). The service tech came out the next day anyway, with a bad attitude, and confirmed they would not do the work. I should have had him turn around and leave when he came in the door. It was painfully obvious he did not want to be there or do any of the work that I had scheduled. Time to call another company and wait another week to get my gas stove hooked up. Gave them a 3 for 5 for saleman, 1 for owner We needed a fireplace for heat in our basement and debated between a direct vent or ventless. We knew little about either. Dave was great and helped us to decide on a unit which we purchased. When I got home though I found I could buy the exact same items for 25% less on line. I e-mailed the owner who replied that he had employees to pay and would not price-match so I cancelled the order. After the owner e-mailed me the return receipt, I responded with an email - here is a cut and paste copy of what I said: "Thank you for the prompt response. I regret not being able to do business as we were happy with the service Dave provided. Unfortunately the Internet is not going away so you will lose more customer like me (not to mention my future business and that of the people who ask about my fireplace) if you maintain a business model anchored in the past. For what it's worth, I am willing to pay more, (admittedly NOT 25%!) but there needs to be a value added. In your case there was none. Not only was there a cheaper alternative, you ignored it and left me to find out on my own after the sale making me feel "taken". Instead, if I had been told about the availability of lower on-line pricing BUT then sold on why I should still buy from you, who knows, maybe that would have helped. Also, I will now get the material shipped for free to my door in the box. With you I would have had to make another trip to Columbus and figure out how to fit it in my vehicle, most likely taking it out of the box which would have made handling it once home difficult. Also, charging me $165 to inspect the installation and arrange the logs was a BIG negative where it should have been a selling point - your service can make all the difference and charging this much on top of the higher prices was not an incentive to buy, quite the opposite." Amazingly, the owner called back and left a voicemail saying he disagreed with me telling me I didn't know whatI was talking about! We were very impressed from start to finish. I shopped around online as we wanted a simple gas log. Our fireplace already had a gasline in it, we thought from a previous appliance. Salesman walked us through everything we wanted to look at, no pressure, no upsell attempts, we sat down made the purchase no hidden costs told us how the install would be priced concerning current gasline. Our log was in stock first week of jan when we purchased but install date might be as late as end of february. We were called the next day and said they could be here the following Monday, we were thrilled. The installer was very professional and personable, walked us through every bit of use and maintenance concerns. Like the quik start print out for computers and appliances, he verbally walked us through that, about a 15 minute presentation, also giving reasons fro some things that might not make sense. I was also impressed that we deal directly with them on warranty work and they deal with the manufacturer for reimbursement or replacement. Over all I would give a 6 stars if available, they definitely went above and beyond. read more
