I really wanted to like this place, especially since it's a local business and family owned. The only good thing I can say is that the woman who was there suggested that I not Zelle and just come back and pay next time (their POS system wasn't working). Unfortunately, I already knew there wasn't going to be a next time and Zelle'd her anyway. This place really needs a good deep cleaning. I walked in to a small eatery with very few tables, horrible lighting, flies everywhere, a random piece of pipe on the floor, and a very sad looking display counter. I was worried about the cleanliness of food preparation just based on what the restaurant looked like. I was hopeful, however, and the food itself wasn't that bad. I didn't get any flat bread with my beef koubideh order. It was a little tough, but decent seasoning. I have been meaning to try this place for a really long time, but this location is a bit far from where I live. So I took the chance when I found myself in the Clayton area this evening. We got a too good to go order which was massive filled with an incredible amount of rice, chapli kabob, stewed spinach or kale, salad, a carrot samosa, a potato samosa, flat bread with potatoes and leaks, and baklava AND we got a separate koobideh. The restaurant is located a shopping center with plenty of parking. The staff included a young man who worked the front and the back and a woman who I believe cooked everything. The restaurant leaves a bit to be desired as far as ambiance goes, but is good for pick up. The young man was very nice. The food smelled incredible. We could not wait to get home and dig in. The chapli was very spicy ( I've never had this before and was surprised). But otherwise everything else tasted great. read more

Located in a plaza with a lot of free parking. Space is small, looks a bit run down, limited seating, not super welcoming if you intend to dine in. We walked in around 2p on a Saturday afternoon and waited in front for ~2 mins before someone came greet us. Service was friendly. Waited ~15 mins for our food. Was packed to go even though we intended to eat there (we were not asked) paid ~$45 for our meals and water + canned coke. Lamb kabob was dry and tasted a bit sour. I was so thrown off with how dry the meat was, I almost choked. Came with 6 pieces and i was only able to eat 2. I question if the lamb was spoiled. 0/10 Chicken kobadeh was ok and seemed to be one of the only things that was made to order/fresh. Beef kobadeh lacked flavor and was also dry, not as dry as the lamb. The seasoning was almost absent. 2/10 Portions were decent. Both meals had tough meat, came with rice which was really bland. There was salad with cucumbers and tomatoes - these seemed fresh. There came a green sour dip/dressing - not sure what it was intended for but this also wasn't good. Came with naan that was warm but a little hard. We were also gifted bolanee and that seemed fresh and flavorful but it came with a dip that was almost like salsa from a jar. What a gem! I found this place purely by accident, because I was in the area last weekend. I spotted it on Yelp (thanks yet again!) and it seemed to have great reviews and feedback from a lot of customers, so I decided to give it a try. And I am so glad that I did. I ordered a few different things from this place and I really liked them all, let's go over the items I got one by one: Bolanee Catchalou ($10) - This dish was amazing. It reminded me a lot of a Chinese scallion pancake, but this Afghan version came with potatoes, leeks and cilantro. It was savory, delicious, and very extremely comforting. The flatbread was soft and warm and not overly greasy, and the potato and leeks filling was perfectly seasoned. And I especially loved how this stuffed flatbread came with different sauces. It came with a yogurt sauce and spicy chili sauce. 10 out of 10. I would order this again. Kobedeh Kabob Beef Plate ($12) - this was a plate of two long charbroiled ground beef sticks. And the beef was well seasoned with onion and some special seasoning, according to the menu. And it also came with a tall mound of rice. I think this plate was really delicious and filling, and I liked it. Although I think I might have preferred the Chapli Kabob more. Chapli Kabob Plate ($12) - The look of this plate was very similar to the other kabob plate but the beef on this one was shaped in 2 patties, and they had stronger flavors in my opinion - they seemed more seasoned with onion, cilantro and special seasoning. And this dish also felt slightly spicier than the other kabob beef plate. Similarly, it also came with a mound of rice. This dish was extremely comforting, filling, and very delicious. They also served a place of complimentary lettuce and tomato slices. Perfect for the kabob plates. I would not call this place a restaurant, given how small the shop was. But what this shop lacked in space, it made up for in the good quality and delicious tasting foods it served. The service from this place was really nice and friendly as well, so it was another plus. *****Customer Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic***** Abas Hamidi Afghan Cuisine is a small family-owned restaurant located in a plaza just west of Concord High School, in the Dana Estates area of Concord. Knowing I love Afghani food, a friend of mine told me about this place a while ago. I finally got a chance to try it when I came here for some takeout on 08/29/2020. I walked into the establishment at around 6:15 pm. The ordering area was narrow and the only noticeable COVID-19 safety measure was a bottle of hand sanitizer on a table near the entrance. It took a few minutes before the lady boss to acknowledge my presence since she was busy cooking. She had a great smile and was very friendly and polite. Their menu featured about a dozen classic Afghani dishes, plus a small assortment of savory and sweet snacks. Below are the items I ordered: Bolanee Catchalou - A savory flatbread stuffed with a filling made with potatoes, leeks, and cilantro and served with a slightly spicy green chili chutney. It was quite delicious and the spicy chutney was a perfect condiment. It would have been perfect had they put a little bit more cilantro and leeks into the filling. Quabili Pallow - You can get it with either beef or lamb. I chose lamb and it was the right choice. The lamb was excellent. It was tender and not gamy. The seasoned rice, topped with carrots and raisins, was absolutely delicious. Chapli Kabob - Consisted of two giant beef patties, rice, salad, and flatbread. The patties were mixed with cilantro and onions and seasoned with various spices and then pan fried. They were flavorful and moist despite the dry looking appearance. Beef Koobideh Kabob - The seasoned ground beef skewers were charbroiled to perfection. They were juicy and robust in taste. Chicken Koobideh Kabob - It was prepared similarly like the Beef Koobideh Kabob. And like the beef ones, these were excellent as well. Chicken Kabo - My least favorite out of everything. It was a dish with about a dozen pieces of charbroiled chicken breast, served with rice, salad, and a couple pieces of flatbread. The chicken was marinated with a blend of regional spices and charbroiled. Although the taste was good, the texture was very, very dry. Everything was made to order, which took quite a bit of time (about 40 minutes). The owner and her family were all involved in the operation so this truly was a home-cooked meal. The portions were very generous. I ended up paying $65 for the entire meal which I thought was a bargain. Despite a couple misses, the food was generally delicious and tasted like homemade. We ordered the "Special Afghani Burger" expecting a chicken kabob pita-like sandwich (per their photo). It was supposed to be filled with chicken kabob, fries, and an egg. Although it is called a burger, when we placed the order, we confirmed we would be getting a chicken dish. We were told it would take 15 minutes, it took 35 minutes for just 2 "burgers"!!!! Their Afghani burger was pita filled with fries and onions topped with cilantro. We got maybe a quarter slice of a hard boiled egg. It was loaded with fries, but NO CHICKEN!!! This is a total mom-and-pop serving no-frills Afghani food. This was our first time trying Afghani food and we really enjoyed the experience. Heads up that they take a little longer to order food so it's best to call ahead. We called ahead to order and the woman told us 25 minutes. 25 minutes later, we arrived and only had to wait another 10 minutes or so, which isn't too bad. We ordered: - Boulanee Catchaloo: This is a pan-fried flatbread filled with potatoes, cilantro and leek. It comes in a pizza box and the smell is HEAVENLY. It comes with a spicy ketchup which is absolutely delicious! Warning: the portion size for this is HUGE. - Chapli Kabob: This was a grilled beef patty over rice and salad. The flavor was alright but pretty simple! It tasted like...salty ground beef! We do wish that it came with a sauce or something because overall the dish felt a little dry. - Beef Koobideh Kabob: This was grilled ground beef shaped into a kabob. Same as Chapli: simple flavor but a tad on the dry side. Comes with a green fruit relish. Overall, if you're tired of your regular takeout I suggest trying something new here. The food skews on the dry side so you might have to bring your own sauce. The ladies that were cooking and rang me up were so sweet! I really wanted to love this new Afghan restaurant in town, but, unfortunately it was a miss. Let's start with the positives: the food was hot, the portions were HUGE & the owner is very nice, but that's where the positives end. Being Afghan myself I know what great Afghan food tastes like & unfortunately the flavors just weren't there. The meats lacked essential Afghan spices & were very one note. The chutney did not taste authentic, the rice was a little undercooked & the mantoo was very salty. (I really hope they were just having an off day.) On top of everything our food took an hour to be made when we were quoted 40 minutes. The restaurant itself is definitely a little hole in the wall. I think this is mainly a takeout establishment. It's really a bummer to have to give a new Afghan spot such a low rating. read more

A fellow Yelper, Harvey K., recently left a great review so I knew I had to try it! We were excited to order lunch from here so we kind of went overboard with the selections. We ordered a few appetizers- bolani katchalu, sambosas and mantoo, along with chicken kabobs and beef koobideh. They give you soo much food! We have enough to eat again for dinner. The bolani is a stuffed flatbread with potatoes, leeks and cilantro. I couldn't taste much of the cilantro and that would have helped to brighten the flavor. The sambosa (fried snack filled with potato and spices) is similar to an Indian samosa, but prepared with a thinner dough. Mantoo are delicate soft dumplings filled with minced beef and onions in a garlic yogurt split pea sauce. Delightful! The chicken kabobs were well seasoned but were unfortunately dry and over cooked. You need to eat it with the condiments given (green and red sauces) to make it palatable. On the other hand, the beef koobideh was on point. It was moist, flavorful, and juicy. The rice was plentiful and the side salad was more of an after thought. You can skip that. You can tell everything is super authentic and full of flavor. Loved the bollani and esp loved the eggplant dumpling dish. Friendly lady owner who doesn't speak great English, but her smiles and friendliness crosses all language barriers. FOOD We ordered a small salad, an eggplant dish, and my fave koobideh kabob. While the salad was a little underwhelming, the dressing on top of it was tasty. Eggplant (5/5) As for the eggplant, this dish really impressed us as we've never had this kind of preparation before. Koobideh kabob (4/5) Maybe because I've been spoiled by the best spiced beef kabobs (Raffi's Place in Glendale, CA), anywhere else is just alright. I'd say the koobideh here was a 4/5, but a low 4. I wanted to like this place, as I love Afghan food and its close by. Unfortunately, the food was way below par. The positive is that its quite cheap, but I rather go elsewhere and get better food. I got the chapli kabob and the quabili pallow. The total, after tax was $25, which is insanely cheap. Their quabili pallow was only $12, while other places its about $20. The meat in both dishes were incredibly dry. It was obviously not cooked to order, nor was it fresh. Their quabili pallow uses chunks of beef, not lamb shank like other places. I would be fine with this, if the meat was tender. But it was so hard and dry, it felt like it must have been heated and reheated multiple times. The chapli was like an overcooked patty, the outside was really charred, on the verge of being burnt. However, it didn't seem like it was cooked recently, tasted like it was cooked a while ago and then reheated. The rice was fresh and fluffy, and the side salad was fine. The piece of bread was soft too. Its just the meat was super dry and reheated too many times. I gave them 2 star instead of 1, simply because the price is way better than other places, but I guess you get what you pay for. Perhaps if you go, don't go on a Saturday...go on Monday when the food might actually be fresh. read more

Not sure if I'll be returning. Food didn't seem fresh. Salad was wilted and the meat (beef or lamb shank I believe) in the Quabili Pallow had this slightly putrid smell. I've eaten this type of dish in various restaurants and I've cooked this type of meat before so I can tell if it's newly cooked or not. This made me ponder whether the food I'm eating was safe to eat. I noticed the samosas where inside a display counter right next to the baklava's and pastries. Quite odd that you have these two types of food right next to each other since refrigerator temperatures would differ between these two types of food. In another post, the samosas had mold in it so, I again wonder if some of their food were pre-made and left sitting there for awhile. The people working there were friendly and the Bolanee Catchalou seemed liked it just came out of the oven, but I caught something quite odd, the plastic lid on the container, where they place their green dipping concoction, was bulging which could be an indication that toxins or harmful germs where a brewing creating a swollen container. I was given more of these dipping sauces along with my orders and decided perhaps it would be best for me not to consume it. Not to say I did not taste or smelled it. There was something slightly off with the taste which made me stay away from it. Better safe than sorry. If you do decide to try this place and feel my comments unjustified, pls let me know for I certainly do not want to provide a bad review for the nice people who run this place.
