I love this place! It is one of my favorite bars ever. Great beer selection. They have 18 taps that are constantly rotating so you neve know what they are going to have on when you go in. I LOVE THAT! The always have something interesting on tap for the beer snobs like me. And if you can't find something you like on tap they have a wonderful bottle selection as well. First off, kudos for hosting a PRIDE event. The drag show was a blast! This is a very cool space with a fun pub/tavern atmosphere and a friendly vibe. I can understand why locals would gravitate here. Here is where the experience went wrong for us: 1) We had to wait too long for rounds of drinks - literally we had to stalk bartenders to get service. Sometimes they stood right in front of us from behind the bar and still it was difficult to get their attention. Only once in our 2 1/2 hours there did staff offer a refill before we had to track down someone for service. 2) The Caprese dish was recommended by the server so we ordered it and it was TERRIBLE. Neither of us could eat it after one taste. It sat in front of us for a good hour before anyone offered to take it away. No one ever asked us if we liked it or if something was wrong. It should have been taken off of our bill, but honestly we just did not want to cause a problem or seem petty. 3) I would have never ordered wine if I knew up front it was $10 a glass - I thought I was ordering house wine and if that is the price of the house brand - we won't be back, because we can't afford The Abbey. read more

A group of friends and I visited this place over the weekend, and having never been myself, I think I have now determined that I have found my new favourite place to relax and unwind in DeLand! We stopped by around 6:30 on a rainy Saturday night. Aside from one or two patrons cozied up to the bar, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. A downside for business of course, but I'm always happiest when crowds are at a minimum so this was ideal for me. I really like the layout of the place - a few tables up front, an accommodating bar area, and assorted sofas and armchairs and coffee tables spread about the place. We chose a spot in the very back, which was great at first; cozy and intimate - but unfortunately right next to a stage. We didn't realize there was going to be live music, and though it was pretty tame - just an older guy doing soft rock 90's covers - it eventually generated too much noise for us to continue our conversation. A cursory glance at the menu showed the beer selection to be pretty ambitious (bordering on daunting for someone who doesn't know much about beer. Like me) However, I was in a wine mood anyway, so I chose a Pinot Grigot flight from their abundant wine flight selection. I believe it was around $15. What I was not expecting was four wine glasses with 3 ounces of each wine and though 3 ounces does not seem like a lot on paper - that was a lot of wine. I didn't think I was going to be able to drink all of that. And yet somehow, after polishing off the last drop I was left thinking "where did all my wine go? I want more!" A member of our party asked our server if they had a kitchen and if they served any food. Though not the slightest bit impolite or unkind, the tone of her answer indicated "yeah...sort of...but you should know that people don't really come here for the food". He forged ahead and ordered a meat and cheese plate anyway. There seemed to be a decent quantity of food on it, but as to the quality, well... The meats seemed like cold cuts from the deli (and not the Boar's Head stuff that they are always trying to upsell you with, either); the cheeses were mostly ok, and it was served with a stack of saltines. Also a little cup of mustard and some oily pesto. I guess it would do the trick as far as getting something in your stomach to soak up all the beer and wine, but honestly, I think one would be better off grabbing some food elsewhere in town. I really can't hold it against the place, though. I mean, we were sort of forewarned. I can see how the place might get busy later on in the evening, and I also think we lucked out because a lot of the Stetson students were probably still home for the holidays and so town was still more or less empty of college kids. I liked this place so much though, that I think I'd be willing to chance it, even on a busier night. I'm pretty sure I'd be a regular here if I lived in DeLand. Their bottled brew list is eclectic and delightful, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. I would have liked to see more beers on tap (yes, they had 18, but it's a beer bar and even my local BW3 has more than 20), and it would have been nice to see more European stuff on tap as well. Worst service I've ever had at any restaurant in my life...60+ yrs. 4 different waiters over 1.5 hrs. took care of the two of us. Didn't order anything special...bowl of chili for 1 and quessadillas for the other. Each ordered a glass of wine. It was almost 30 minutes before the wine appeared, another 20 for the "meal". Meanwhile folks that came in after us, were promptly served & left. Final request was for a glass of water and then I had to get up and go ask the bartender for that after a 10 minute wait. read more

This place keeps getting better. Some of the staff are now Cicerone certified (or working on full certification). Come out to enjoy the Randalls on Thursdays. They also have more visits from prominent beer companies. St. Martin's brought their great Dubel and Tripel in keg last week and are fantastic! More companies are bringing and showing their brews (Green Flash this Thursday), so more reason to visit the best pub in Deland!! read more

My husband and I stopped in to this establishment at about 5:30 pm on a Tuesday evening. Although it was a bit early and not very busy yet, people were coming in pretty steadily by the time we left. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable and the bartender was friendly and very knowledgeable about their extensive selection of beers and wines. We are far from being experts on either one, but he didn't make us feel bad at about that. He seemed to genuinely enjoy teaching us about the different beers. The people who were there at the bar were friendly as well. We really enjoyed our visit and the beer we drank while there. We look forward to trying many other beers there in the future! read more

Awesome beer selection. And I mean awesome! Beers from Allagash, Dogfish Head (and not your everyday Dogfish either), Weyerbacher and tons of others. Somehow they seem to acquire drafts that no one else has either. The service is great and the staff knows more about the brews than anywhere I've ever been. (Not to say I've been everywhere but you know). Food is limited but they let you order from their restaurant across the street and put it all on one check for you. There is no place else like this. A combination of atmosphere, food, and beer will win me over every time. Not knowing what to expect, I took some major back roads in Florida to hit Deland on my way home from a race in Clermont. I had read about the Abbey and any place with a Belgian reference in its name better live up to it, especially since one of the best beer bars in the world, and in my world, happens to be in my hometown. Based on my preferences, one of the knowledgeable bartender served me up a double IPA that hit the spot after a long morning of racing. After taking a look at the menu, I ordered the extraordinary Norville burger topped with gruyere cheese, boudrain sauce, a fried egg, with a side of sweet potatoes fries and a cucumber salad. The meal was on point, the burger tasted homemade and the toppings made it stand out. The sweet potato fries were cooked and salted perfectly; not too soggy and just the right crispiness. I've lived in DeLand for my entire life, and in my youth, I couldn't wait to be 21 to order a drink. I always admired the classiness of the place. First of all, the beer and wine selection is amazing - especially the beer selection. In addition, Abbey-owned restaurant, Norville Barnes, which is located directly across the street, provides the Abbey with their menu - or part of it anyway. The staff is very knowledgable, and was able to give me recommendations. They also have cider on draft, which is good is you're not much of a beer drinker, or have someone in your group who isn't crazy about beer. There's live music on Friday and Saturday nights, which I tend to avoid because It's not a huge place, and gets crowded with loud people and the music can be kind of loud - just not my thing. I prefer to chill, so I come in the middle of the week. Seating is great - comfy and posh. The atmosphere is great too. The price is slightly higher than the surrounding bars, at about $5-8 dollars for a bottled beer. Just remember that you'll be getting quality over quantity. read more

I have found the staff to be always welcoming and a pleasure to talk to (if you go when they are not too busy). This is the kind of place that I could never see existing in DeLand in all the years I spent growing up here. But in the past few years as DeLand has transitioned to a mecca for the Winter Park-type crowd this has been one of several high-end beer and wine bars that has opened up, and they execute very well on their business model. The selection of beers is first-rate, and is about the best you are going to find anywhere. Everything from American craft brews and microbrews up to your rare Belgian Trappist beers. Wine selection is quite good as well. The food is not the focus of the place but their appetizers are great and pair well with their drink offerings. The setting and ambience are great as well. It's popular with pretty much everyone, but the crowd is definitely a bit more cultured than what you will find in other downtown establishments. surprise surprise who ever thought I would pay 25 dollars for a bottle of beer and rave about it (I am on the frugal side most of the times). the place has a cool vibe, staff and ownership on premises and they know and enjoy their product. my wife and I shared an app of cold cuts and cheese with some warm pita bread slices and and a fresh made olive oil dipping sauce all the ingredients were of high quality and complimented our beer. the sad part is I cannot remember the exact name it was Belgian spontaneous fermented beer made especially for the Xmas season the word Noel was on the bottle. this was an absolute treat smooth not yeasty it just melted in your mouth with flavors of malt and berries. if you are a beer connoisseur and want to try some off the wall out of this world beers this is a perfect road trip opportunity. the staff might even give you a sample of their own home brews I got lucky and tried a pumpkin ale which had some good gravity going on.
