I came to the Los Alamitos location, and Janice was my instructor. I really liked how she taught the class. Having bartended before, I knew that this was my chance to reinforce good habits, and learn new ones that would serve me well in the industry. Janice had a lot on her hands, because contrary to what John (the man who enrolled me) said, I was not with new students, I was thrown in with a class already in progress (I'm still going back to learn things, more on why in a minute). Unfortunately, it took me longer to complete my training, because the ice machine was broken. Doesn't seem like a big deal right? Kind of is. Without ice, I can't make drinks, and with 8 people in two classes operating in one session, I had to use old ice that had already been used. NOT the habit I want to form. Additionally, Janice was teaching two different classes, so I was completely confused by the different information, making it harder to internalize what I was SUPPOSED to be learning in any given class. EXTREMELY frustrating. ON THE PLUS SIDE, I did get a steep discount, which was amazing, however, I would have happily paid more for a class that had all functioning equipment (oh, half the glasses were not the correct sizes and kinds that we were supposed to be learning), and was all on the same page. I feel I could have walked away with more from this experience. I don't regret spending the money, but I would recommend you pay more money for better quality. UPDATE: John called me this afternoon to address my concerns. He seemed genuinely concerned about my experience, and I appreciate that kind of customer service. He says the ice machine will be fixed, and there will be new glasses on Thursday evening when I go in to get some more practice, so I'm really hoping to be able to fix a few of the issues I was having with my habits during class. Absolutely an amazing experience! Came in knowing just about nothing about alcohol and mixing... spent most of my time with Jan and some time with Austin. Both of them are amazing! I had the best experience with this school and the instructor Rayven. Her teaching methods were extremely precise and effective. Rayven has a great personality and is really helpful. The class was educational and fun at the same time. Rayven plays music and dims the lights and creates a bar environment while you're learning so it really strengthens your skills and gets you ready for the real thing. Honestly this place might surprise you like how it surprised me! I was looking for bartending schools in my area and this came up alongside other ones, I kind of felt weird with just about all of them but I took my chance with this one since they were doing a deal a couple of months ago. I had been wanting to try a Bartending school for a while but was unsure because of the cost. When I saw a Living Social deal for ABC, I jumped on it since it was like $100 off the original cost. I ended up doing the two week, M-Th course from 9am-1pm. I definitely recommend doing this instead of cramming all the drink recipes and skills within two weekends. If you have the time, of course. You get to digest the material every night and practice the next morning. Super helpful. I feel like I learned mostly in the practicing, not the studying. I was expecting to be instructed by more than one person, but we only had one teacher, Kim, who was very knowledgeable, practical, and fun. She gave some good advice. If you are thinking about bartending and don't have any experience whatsoever, it is recommended to take a bartending course to get your hands dirty and see what it feels like to pour correctly, set up and break down a bar, learn alcohols, etc. It will give you confidence that is essential in this field. And you get job leads. Keep in mind, it's not job assistance. You just get an email with a list of job leads in L.A. and Orange County and it's up to you to apply. They can also help you with your resume. Overall, this place helped me gain confidence and basic skills in a short amount of time, and I was able to get job rather quickly. I took a course three years ago at national bartending school in covina. I never took the the test because I moved to NY for a bit. So I came back to Cali and figured I would try to get certified. So I thought about going to back that the school I went to but a few friends of mine went to ABC bartending school. I saw a special on living social and decided to go for it. Overall I loved the school, it was easy and fun. But most of all it didn't feel intimidating. Kim is sweet, straight forward, and really cares that you do well. She's straight forward on how the industry works and gives you advise. The other instructor ... I forgot his name lol! So bad... I know. But he is hilarious, as a bunch of experience, currently works three jobs, two bartending and working at the school. He gives you ins and outs about the industry as well. And is pretty easy going. Janice.. The bar was set very high when I read the Yelp reviews for ABC Bartending School all because I kept seeing her name pop up on every comment. She lives up to her reputation to say the least. That woman really worked hard to be such a special human. She feels like someone you know, or better yet - someone you want to know. Her charisma and ability to engage 5-10 people in her stories for multiple hours is a skill in itself. Theres not many people I could say this about but she deserves all the credit. My sister and I took this course a couple months ago. The first day was rough. Apparently she was on vacation and the boss man wanted to keep the show going while she was away - brought in some guy who very clearly did not care about being there at all. The only reason why I give my experience 5/5 is solely due to Janice and Austen for doing their job to the highest level of service. We parted her with a gift basket full of goodies, that's how much we enjoyed ourselves. If you're on the fence about spending your time doing bartending courses, invest in Janice. It sounds like she's only going to be there for so long so you better get her before she's gone! I'm not dissing ABCBS by any means but you would be really fortunate to work under someone like Janice or Austen specifically. Scam, unfortunately. Great teacher, misleading "job placement" advertising. Upon graduating we were told to lie about having serving experience (which they neglected to tell us was a prerequisite for most bartending jobs). Instead of actually placing us, we were promised job lead texts for life, which was a false promise as well. Had a great experience but feel taken advantage of. Only reason I didn't rate one star is because of the instructor, Ryan, who's a good teacher, super experienced, funny, and has plenty of stories and tips to share. Furnishings and equipment are run down and haggard. Bar is built too high, a lot of popular bottles aren't stocked and the ones that are have labels so worn you can tell what they are only by the bottle. Food coloring and water is used instead of alcohol, which is fine, but often the colors are imbalanced so that the liquor has the incorrect color, which improperly trains the eye for how a drink or cocktail should look. Workbook is out of date and misses a lot of current brand labels and mixed drinks. I'd recommend someone shadow a bartender and apply for actual work than going to this school. read more

I wanted to take the course because my friend kept running her mouth of drinks, cocktails, liqueurs and spirits like an expert. I was impressed, what was more impressing is the money that can be made in Bartending. So I called and Kim made it very easy to get into the earliest class they could offer. We had 3 instructors in the morning class Ryan, Janice and Kim. All three instructors are amazing with different types of teaching styles and personalities, which is a big plus because these are the personalities you are going to see and need to prosper in the spirit serving industry. Janice is great at teaching at a fast paced "drill sergent" style. She is fun, out-going and have a New-York Attitude to her. She is very good at teaching speed and what the right kind of attitude and personality is required behind the bar. Kim is a sweetheart. She is very nice and patient and will answer every question you have. She is very good at teaching the business side of things like tips, calculations, preparing multiple drinks at once, and bar terms. Ryan acts more like a guru of bartending. He came from a long line of bartenders in his family so his stories and side tracks are very valuable lessons to take home with you. His teaching style is more laid back then the rest of the instructors but still learned plenty from mixing drinks and cocktails.
