I had been wanting to try a Bartending school for a while but was unsure because of the cost. When I saw a Living Social deal for ABC, I jumped on it since it was like $100 off the original cost. I ended up doing the two week, M-Th course from 9am-1pm. I definitely recommend doing this instead of cramming all the drink recipes and skills within two weekends. If you have the time, of course. You get to digest the material every night and practice the next morning. Super helpful. I feel like I learned mostly in the practicing, not the studying. I was expecting to be instructed by more than one person, but we only had one teacher, Kim, who was very knowledgeable, practical, and fun. She gave some good advice. If you are thinking about bartending and don't have any experience whatsoever, it is recommended to take a bartending course to get your hands dirty and see what it feels like to pour correctly, set up and break down a bar, learn alcohols, etc. It will give you confidence that is essential in this field. And you get job leads. Keep in mind, it's not job assistance. You just get an email with a list of job leads in L.A. and Orange County and it's up to you to apply. They can also help you with your resume. Overall, this place helped me gain confidence and basic skills in a short amount of time, and I was able to get job rather quickly. But it was the confidence this place gave me more than anything. I am very grateful for this experience and have no regrets. read more

I took a course three years ago at national bartending school in covina. I never took the the test because I moved to NY for a bit. So I came back to Cali and figured I would try to get certified. So I thought about going to back that the school I went to but a few friends of mine went to ABC bartending school. I saw a special on living social and decided to go for it. Overall I loved the school, it was easy and fun. But most of all it didn't feel intimidating. Kim is sweet, straight forward, and really cares that you do well. She's straight forward on how the industry works and gives you advise. The other instructor ... I forgot his name lol! So bad... I know. But he is hilarious, as a bunch of experience, currently works three jobs, two bartending and working at the school. He gives you ins and outs about the industry as well. And is pretty easy going. Both instructors are a great mix to learn from. They honestly want you to do well and pass. I would recommend this school 110% Plenty of parking. read more

Janice.. The bar was set very high when I read the Yelp reviews for ABC Bartending School all because I kept seeing her name pop up on every comment. She lives up to her reputation to say the least. That woman really worked hard to be such a special human. She feels like someone you know, or better yet - someone you want to know. Her charisma and ability to engage 5-10 people in her stories for multiple hours is a skill in itself. Theres not many people I could say this about but she deserves all the credit. My sister and I took this course a couple months ago. The first day was rough. Apparently she was on vacation and the boss man wanted to keep the show going while she was away - brought in some guy who very clearly did not care about being there at all. The only reason why I give my experience 5/5 is solely due to Janice and Austen for doing their job to the highest level of service. We parted her with a gift basket full of goodies, that's how much we enjoyed ourselves. If you're on the fence about spending your time doing bartending courses, invest in Janice. It sounds like she's only going to be there for so long so you better get her before she's gone! I'm not dissing ABCBS by any means but you would be really fortunate to work under someone like Janice or Austen specifically. By the time I was about to start the classes, I was over it, but after just one class I remembered how much fun it is to learn something hands-on style. I took an evening class with JT, and it was a blast. She's a great teacher with lots of tips of the trade and a few great signature drinks too. She's patient, helpful, and hilarious. Scam, unfortunately. Great teacher, misleading "job placement" advertising. Upon graduating we were told to lie about having serving experience (which they neglected to tell us was a prerequisite for most bartending jobs). Instead of actually placing us, we were promised job lead texts for life, which was a false promise as well. Had a great experience but feel taken advantage of. Only reason I didn't rate one star is because of the instructor, Ryan, who's a good teacher, super experienced, funny, and has plenty of stories and tips to share. Furnishings and equipment are run down and haggard. Bar is built too high, a lot of popular bottles aren't stocked and the ones that are have labels so worn you can tell what they are only by the bottle. Food coloring and water is used instead of alcohol, which is fine, but often the colors are imbalanced so that the liquor has the incorrect color, which improperly trains the eye for how a drink or cocktail should look. Workbook is out of date and misses a lot of current brand labels and mixed drinks. I'd recommend someone shadow a bartender and apply for actual work than going to this school. read more

I was impressed, what was more impressing is the money that can be made in Bartending. So I called and Kim made it very easy to get into the earliest class they could offer. We had 3 instructors in the morning class Ryan, Janice and Kim. All three instructors are amazing with different types of teaching styles and personalities, which is a big plus because these are the personalities you are going to see and need to prosper in the spirit serving industry. Janice is great at teaching at a fast paced "drill sergent" style. She is fun, out-going and have a New-York Attitude to her. She is very good at teaching speed and what the right kind of attitude and personality is required behind the bar. Kim is a sweetheart. She is very nice and patient and will answer every question you have. She is very good at teaching the business side of things like tips, calculations, preparing multiple drinks at once, and bar terms. Ryan acts more like a guru of bartending. He came from a long line of bartenders in his family so his stories and side tracks are very valuable lessons to take home with you. His teaching style is more laid back then the rest of the instructors but still learned plenty from mixing drinks and cocktails. I had a great experience going through the bartending classes here! I was enrolled in the 6-9:30pm classes, and I honestly looked forward to this class more than my college classes. Kim was a blast to learn from, sharing drinking stories and laughs a lot of the time. First and foremost if you are looking to be a bartender at any level whether it be at your local bar, 5 star restaurant or a private party bartender you need to attend ABC Bartending School, especially this one!! A very easy sign up process, walk in Kim or Janice (instructors) will greet you there. They will tell you how they run the classes and decide whether you would like a morning or night class and you can start right away. The school is an actual bar set up! Almost every liquor in every bar they have so you can practice handling, pour counts, getting used to the different glasses that are used in every bar and most of all music will be played while making drinks. Class is not mandatory but I strongly encourage to go to everyone because isn't that what you paid for? U learn about 10 drinks a day and the classes are only 4 days a week for about 3 hours a day and those hours go by fast because your are constantly moving or working, pretty much the same thing you will be doing once you start working anywhere. My instructor was Janice during my two weeks and let me tell you... She does not play when it comes to having all of your drinks spot on, which you absolutely want because once you start working, that practice in class will help make better drinks which means better tips! She will challenge you and will pound how to make the drinks in your head to the point where you start to think about the ingredients of drinks when you are not even in class. She is full of fun and has a ton of stories about multiple alcohols she's encountered. All in all I'm glad I chose this particular ABC Bartending school because it's the closest you get to a actual bar setting, Janice and Kim are awesome instructors that push you to be the best bartender, that will ultimately set you up to make a ton of money.
