Understated front window. Treasures await on the inside,

Easy to go sailing right past Abernethy Sticks, the storefront has a bit of a setback from the street. Plyers Mill Road comes off of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, when you cross Connecticut Avenue, Plyers Mill picks up on the other side. If the red awning-gas station on Connecticut and Plyers Mill is in your site, you're there. It's by the Kensington Fire House. Once found, you've found a treasure. Shop is filled with gorgeous woods, has the immistakable heady fragrance of freshly sawn wood. No showroom, but who needs it---they have a great website. Take a look around the website, it's extensive. Might have a link to Facebook too. Folks at Abernethy Sticks know their wood, that's for sure. If there's a better wood for your project, they'll recommend it. One note of caution, have your measurements with you. If you have a picture from a magazine, bring it so you can share the idea to be on the same page at the get-go. Write yourself an email and have the notes in front of you. It's not a one man shop, but they're busy and you'd be keeping them from something. Be prepared because it's easy to do so. Browse the website, it'll answer most questions. Thought I might find a bulletin board with business cards for woodworkers for hire, but Abernethy Sticks doesn't provide references. That's what we have Yelp for. I found them because I need a fascia board. TW Perry referred me to Abernethy's because they're top notch and can do Millwork to order. I had a quick chat when I visited, they recommended the wood: yes, it'll take a paint, yes, they can do rake and finish pieces to order. Turnaround is a couple of days if they have the wood. Suggested getting the contractor to measure so we can be exact. Great, we're in business, I'll give you a call when I have the size. There was a big thick piece of black walnut by the door. It wanted to go home with me even though I have no immediate use for it. I felt sorry for it, gave my credit card and they loaded to the car for me. You know animal rescue? Same. http://asticks.com/

Wood samples bought and few were for free.

Highly recommend As It Should Be for your custom carpentry project! We worked with Shlomo and his…read moreson Coby to build a custom bookshelf/ entertainment center along an empty wall in our house. Shlomo was patient and offered his input as we figured out what design and materials we wanted. His team was able to move an outlet, build and install the shelving and cabinets, and mount the TV. We are very happy with how it turned out! Just a note that they specialize in custom work and keep a busy calendar so it may take some months from start to finish. Our project took even longer due to holidays and other work being done at our house. The price was higher than other companies we got quotes from due to the custom work but we felt it was well worth the quality!

You should pick "As It Should Be" for your next cabinetry project. Friends whose taste and…read morejudgment we trust recommended Shlomo and the team at "As It Should Be" to us. From the moment we reached out, Shlomo was prompt, responsive, and understanding of first-time homeowners on their first project. Shlomo came to our house and walked through with me the two concepts I had in mind. He asked key questions that helped better shape the ideas, took the necessary measurements, then followed up in short order with a clear proposal and quote. The pricing was competitive and within our budget. Once we decided to move forward, the team delivered on the carpentry faster than we expected. Max and the team who did the carpentry were friendly and understanding of two tired parents who had to work in the house through the day. The work they performed was impeccable. The final product? 1) Built-in bookshelves with a table-height counter and drawers below: a showstopper and the new centerpiece of our living room; and 2) a ceiling-high pantry cabinet in our kitchen, attached to a new counter with a built-in garbage/recycling drawer. We are thrilled with the quality of these pieces, which have truly made our new home our own. If you are looking for cabinetry work in the DC-area, we unequivocally recommend you go with "As It Should Be." They will do great work for you.
