I had an excellent experience today buying lumber for a home project! I don't have a lot of experience buying lumber or tools, but from the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted by a friendly face and made to feel welcome. The man who helped me - I believe his name was Tim - did a great job answering my questions and listening to what I was looking for. He led me to the warehouse and introduced me to another friendly gentleman named Thomas who helped me find the perfect piece of lumber that I needed to mount a hanging rack in my kitchen. I really hate having to go into those giant box hardware stores that are understaffed and hard to navigate. I'm so glad there's a close and reliable local business with friendly and knowledgeable staff. I'll definitely be shopping here from now on! read more

Lumber is fine, prices are fine. Came here because I wanted to support local business instead of Home Depot but the guy at the register seemed upset I had the nerve to set foot in his shop. Totally rude, can't say I've ever run into a cashier with his type of attitude in several years. read more

Good selection of basic materials. Mixed staff -- some helpful, some ornery. Too much attitude. Prices fluctuate on lumber from good to bad, depending on the lunar cycle and the cash needs of the owner. Overall a quirky experience. read more

I agree with the other 5-star review wholeheartedly - it's a lumber store that sells some hardware. Also, note the location - on E. Gude - which is the primary source of materials for contractors and builders. Less so for your typical homeowner/home improvement type. I have always found the people inside to be very knowledgeable. Just because they don't have a "greeter" at the door or rush up to you to see if you need help, IMO, is no reason to give them one star. I believe they primarily deal with professional builders, contractors, and workers in the industry - people who know what they want prior to coming in. My advice is, if you want to be helped, don't stand around passively waiting to make eye contact, go and ask for it. You're not at a singles bar trying to catch the eye of some young blonde (or brunette) intern. read more

This is truly a LUMBER YARD. If you're looking for weed killer you MIGHT find it...probably not. Because as I mentioned LUMBER YARD. For those that get frustrated because no one has approached, um, go ask for help? Because many of us know what we need and don't want to be bothered - so either way that makes the store "wrong" in someone's opinion. Either they are "ignoring" someone or "bothering" someone else. As for fluctuating prices - lumber is a COMMODITY and prices change HOURLY so no, it isn't based on the owner's need for cash flow. I've been dealing with Fisher's for 20+ years - when I need help, I ask. If I can't find something that isn't LUMBER related I don't get all pissy. That would be like going to a grocery store for socks. You might get lucky, but probably not. And if not, certainly not the store's fault. read more

About 3 months I spent 5 minutes trying to make eye contact with any of the men behind the counter (or the 2 talking in the office) and the only people who did make eye contact in return broke it off, so I was left looking at doors and Trex samples but nobody said so much as "Good morning," let alone asked if I needed help with anything. (As it turned out, I had a specific project in mind and specifically wanted to direct my business to a local establishment, even though I've already priced out the project at Home Depot.) I gave up after multiple attempts to get ANYONE'S attention. On my way out, I passed a man coming in, and as I looked back into the store, I saw that HE was being helped BEFORE I EVEN GOT INTO MY CAR - what, 10 seconds? This morning I decided to see if last visit was an anomaly. Went in looking for a Caulker's Edge to help with a project. Spent FIVE MINUTES looking in and near the caulk area, during which time one associate made eye contact with me while walking past me (I'd optimistically thought perhaps he was coming to ask if I was looking for something specific) - and then moved on without even a hello. At one point I had starter fluid in my hand but when the gentleman who'd just walked in (after I'd BEEN IN the store several minutes) got waited on promptly, I put it back on the shelf and headed for the door. I did find the Caulker's Edge on the counter on my way out but at that point I couldn't see why I'd give a store that wouldn't wait on me even the $2 it cost. I still don't have either starter fluid OR a Caulker's Edge....but I'm not going to get it here. I used to rant and rave at Home Depot for awful service, but after a few years away from them I came back, and since then I have had NO trouble being greeted, helped, and otherwise NOTICED when I visit, no matter what department and no matter how small the purchase. But the whole point of going to Fisher's was to give a small local business some love. If only it had been reciprocated, I might be there right now sizing out French doors for my bedroom closet and pricing out composite for the new deck we're going to need. :-( C'mon, guys - I really REALLY wanted to give a small Rockville business my patronage. This is not cool. Should I really need to be a man, or accompanied by a man, in order to get some service? :-( Not even a "Hello" once people were off the phones and talking to each other instead of other customers? Risk my life, mask and all to pickup some 2x10x8 and when we get to the pile, the 7 or so boards left on the first pile were either warped or knotty and not useful for the emergency repair I was doing. I had selected 2 useful boards leaving the rest of the garbage boards. The guy in the yard refuses to break into the next pallet. Then the guy at the counter refused to make an exception and without blinking refunded my money. The look and muttering of the guy at the counter suggested management wouldn't budge on breaking the next pallet so he simply wouldn't ask. So this likely isn't the first time it's come up.. The employee seemed frustrated that he had to refund $. I mean how bad a leader/owner/manager do you have to be to piss off / scare off potential sales inside the first 10 minutes a customer walks through the door with a bad policy. I had not been in here before, but knew of the place, been passing by it for 37 years. I was like "wow good to know they are here with some stuff handy in the shop". NOPE! Go elsewhere, A bunch of good ole boys must run this place and are stuck using 1980's business practices. They had plenty of workers standing around the yard on the clock doing absolutely nothing, the least they could do is have them re-stack the pallet and wrap it back up! #mindset read more

Seriously I'm confused by the negative reviews. This is a perfectly fine lumber yard. I exchanged 2-3 (super fast) emails with the staff there and it took 2 minutes to pass my order, which was in my driveway the next day. I did not even have to roam in the store to find what I needed; It does not get much better than this. They had the same prices than the competing chain, but for better quality wood. Fisher Lumber is a no-nonsense place... it's almost like shopping online. read more

I went in to Fisher Lumber, a regular supplier for many years, for a routine visit and I have got to say, I love working with the people at Fisher. While some of the guys are newer and not as knowledgable as others, there is a real team atmoshpere and the individuals here really seem to be able to teach each other about the trade. Don Hershey does a fabulous job at managing the place, the ladies in the office are always helpful and they guys in the yard are amazing. After dealing with Fisher for ten years, I felt the need to share after my wonderful experience with them today. read more

I wish you could give "negative stars" but since 1 star is the lowest... Over the years I have needed specialty lumber products for custom wood work. I have stopped in several times (after months of in between), but these folks are ALWAYS nasty, rude and it leaves me wondering how they stay in business. Great service. Two guys seem to run the show. They apparently work in the warehouse, but they greeted me, rang up, and filled my order out back! Some of the others sat at their desk looking "terribly" busy, but these two made my experience super positive. If I can get them again I will be back often. read more
