I recently had a disappointing experience with a manager at TW Perry in Silver Spring, and I feel it's important to share. The manager, Bebe, laughed at me when I questioned a sign that clearly stated "All Valspar Paint is on Sale." When I pointed out that the sign did not mention any exclusions, he told me the sale only applied to discontinued paint. I asked where that was indicated, and instead of explaining, he tore down the signs and said, "I've never had anyone question that it's just the discontinued paint." When I asked if the paint I selected was included in the sale, he dismissed me and said I would have to pay full price, then walked away as if I was the one who misunderstood--despite the signage being inaccurate. For clarity, there were two signs covering the 12-foot section of Valspar paint where I selected my item, and both said "All Valspar Paint on Sale." The issue wasn't just the incorrect signage--it was the way the situation was handled. Laughing at a customer, dismissing their legitimate concern, and refusing to acknowledge an error is not acceptable behavior from any employee, let alone a manager. Mistakes happen, but professionalism requires owning them, not projecting them onto customers. I hope TW Perry takes this feedback seriously and provides better training so managers can handle these situations respectfully and professionally in the future. read more

It's amazing when you find a place like this and wonder how on earth do they stay in business. I don't get. I work so hard and then TW Perry - how do they make their money? A very nice man at Strosniders/Ace in Kensington (those people earn their salary, for sure) suggested I try TW Perry for something I was looking for. I drove there - in the morning during their posted business hours, no one there, no one working, doors locked. A couple of other men were waiting there too. Then I saw the note saying they were closed until due to employee event. So I waited, and waited - way past noon. They didn't return. I left. I called all afternoon- no answer. Left a message- nothing. Called many times the next day - no one EVER answered any call- it didn't matter what option you selected, no one is working there. The message recommends you text them. So I pull over and send a text since they can't be bothered with customer drop ins or customer phone calls. Guess what?????....... Yep - you're right they NEVER responded. You gotta wonder about businesses like this, pretty shady- they not doing any business so what's going on. read more

The people at this store DO NOT want to help you. I wanted a key made so I visited. There were three people at the counter; 2 were helping customers. The 3rd person stood there without even acknowledging that I was there - he was standing there on his phone. When I tried to get his attention, he looked up from the phone, copped a total attitude with me and said "he was helping another customer". I walked away and found someone else to help. Then, as I was waiting in line (again, 2 people had customers, the same man was standing behind the counter not helping anyone), I would have thought that it would have been great customer service to ask if I needed help. Mary helped us put together a project like an engineer. when our order came in,all the boards were actually straight, not like the big box stores. their products are superior, even though they may cost a little bit more, It's worth it. read more

I felt compelled to write a glowing review after seeing the negative reviews here, and yet being recommended to TW Perry by a handyman I trust. I found a bunk bed design (from Jen Woodhouse) and sent them a material list and a quote request. They got back to me in 48 hours, for a cost within $10 of the big box store estimate. We took the quote to the Silver Spring location and someone helped us find all the pieces and order up the wood from their warehouse. Everything was in stock, which was incredible given today's circumstances. It was almost too easy. They helped load the wood into the back of my van and we went home. Wood had two imperfections I found upon arrival at my home; I sent an email and they quickly responded to say they'd replace it. I think the key to my happy visit (and my first) was being prepared. Don't show up waffling on what you want. Do your homework, watch YouTube videos about what moulding you want, or what size door you need, make a detailed material list, and THEN go to these guys. And in general *pulls out soapbox,* don't go to a hardware store and expect service like you're at a furniture store. TW Perry has big contractors coming through all day, which should be your first giveaway that people who know what they're doing go with them. Contractors don't need their hands held - they need reliable products. If you don't know what you're doing, go to the big box store. You'll be sure to find employees there who also don't know what they're doing. If you've got a project that you want to come out looking professional, go where the professionals (and me, a snobby amateur) go -- this place. read more

Screwed up our order, didn't deliver it, and when it finally arrived it was the wrong material. My Workers walked off job because materials didn't come twice in a row. Lost over 900$ in labor costs. delivery man made racist remarks. Not cool. Other folks were understanding and tried hard to resolve the issue. Mixed bag. read more

As a loyal customer of TW Perry for over 20 years, working on my own house, as a home improvement contractor, and real estate investor I can no longer recommend TW Perry to anyone. Over the last year the quality of the lumber has been so horrible my subcontractors refuse to work with it. Special orders have been horribly messed up, regular orders seem to get forgotten, and deliveries when they do happen are sometimes incomplete. I'm no longer sure who I'm working for ---TW Perry or myself since I seem to be spending more time getting my orders filled than getting my work done. They seem to be going down the same path as hechingers did, looking to go out of business. read more

I am sick of loading my own truck. Usually the people in the yard look the other way or are too busy checking their phones. Someone there told me he wasn't going to load metal lath because it hurt his hands and walked away I load my truck myself and usually have to search for the materials because the employees look the other way I go to Perry at times because they are closer. This place is really two entirely different stores: an unremarkable and adequate lumberyard/hardware store and an absolutely disastrous window and door retailer. We have had absolutely nothing but trouble through the entire selection, purchasing, and delivery processes and we still don't have either the correct doors or even usable doors. Their customer service is terrible. They fail to return calls or emails and it takes weeks to get an actionable quote to finally give them money to purchase doors and windows leading to delays in our renovation project entirely because of TW Perry. It took longer than stated to get everything in stock. We had to visit their warehouse three separate times to pick up our order because despite telling us three different times it was ready...it was not. Once we did finally pick up the doors, we wished we hadn't. The doors were nicked, warped, and hardware was installed incorrectly. They were entirely unusable and the full order still has not come in. We canceled it and have moved on. Throughout the entire process their customer service has been abysmal. Local companies like TW Perry love to complain about online and big box companies putting them out of business. Instead, it's almost always their own poor customer service. If you need lumber, maybe this is a place to consider going (though their customer service is completely hit or miss and if you want to cut a 14' down to an 8' and 6', it's the biggest hassle ever - though Home Depot happily did it for me!). If you instead are in the market for doors and windows I cannot warn you off enough. Just stay away from this disaster of a store. The dust, disruption, and damage of a home renovation don't hold a candle to the frustration of working with TW Perry! read more

I tried to order french doors three times. Once even going in and sitting with a person one day. She never emailed back the options or another appointment time. I then tried calling and leaving a message twice. I guess a $4,000 Anderson Door is not worth their time. If we liked working with them we were going to have them replace 9 of our interior doors plus some other projects. Believe it or not, we then went to the Aspen Hills Home Depot and they were a breeze to work with. They are now coming to measure to replace our doors, and the $4,000 patio door will be delivered right to our house. Too bad, So sad... read more

Their truck crashed into my parked car one morning and then proceeded to rudely deny all responsibility, despite eyewitness testimony and time stamped photographs of the incident. Filing a claim against their insurance company despite having a police report which clearly documented the offense has proven to be an excruciating and time consuming experience. The company arrogantly assumes it can steamroll an individual with its greater resources and specious claims of innocence but the vigor with which they are blocking a simple and just resolution leads me to believe that either: 1) they are in a precarious financial position or 2) this is a frequent occurrence. Worse, the accident could have been easily avoided were the foreman slightly less lazy. It was extremely foolish to attempt to steer an 18 wheeler into our narrow back alley in order to save the effort of having to carry a couple of windows an extra 30 feet. If you like to do business with a company that cuts corners, hires incompetents, is "insured" in name only and does not take any ownership for its actions, I heartily endorse TW Perry. read more

Atrocious customer service. Sales reps easy to reach if you want to place an order; basically impossible to reach if you need assistance after you've paid. Everyone you talk to will say you need to speak with someone else, and then that person will say well actually you need to speak to someone else, and on and on until you've been re-directed to everyone at the store... 2 stars only b/c their pricing - and quality of lumber - is slightly better than Home Depot/Lowes. I have been a client of TW Perry's for over a decade. Today I paid my first visit to this new Silver Spring location and I could say is WOW!! The new building is beautiful, clean and the showroom is full of samples. They're known for their huge inventory, competitive pricing, lighting fast delivery system, an amazing millwork shop and excellent customer service. The gentleman that assisted me today was very knowledgeable and was a pleasure to work with. I was saddened by the poor Yelp! reviews of this location, as I have NEVER encountered such treatment at ANY of their locations. TW Perry is my nearest professional quality lumber and building supply store, and for years I've used them for my larger construction and renovation jobs. As another reviewer states, they're two entirely different stores - an adequate lumber supplier, albeit one with declining quality, and very spotty inventory, location to location. Their window and door division however is just amazing in their capacity to over-promise and under-deliver. In the past year I've ordered Mi brand windows for a basement shop renovation, and a guest bathroom, as well as several pre-hung steel exterior doors, and a few solid core pre-hung doors, and some solid core door slabs. The doors were all correct, but took longer than promised by as much as a multiple of the delivery time. The shop windows, estimated at 10 to 14 days weren't even ordered from the manufacturer for a month, then while I was away for a week, they were dropped off in my driveway. When placing the order for the recent guest bathroom window, I showed the sales associate 8-1/2 x 11 printed pictures of the finished masonry opening, described how I was going to furr the opening, and that the window was going to push in from inside up to the inside of the exterior masonry, be shimmed then screwed into the 5/4 pine furring, so NO NAIL FIN please. I just picked up my window, two weeks late, and with a goddamned nail fin. The sales associate helpfully added "You can cut it off". It's unfortunate, as they're no stoplights from my house, and I really don't like to buy wood from Home Despot. read more

Whenever I go I look for Malvern--a friendly guy who knows what he's talking about, gives great advice and helps you collect what you need--all in a wicked Jamaican accent. Once I did catch a staff person in the lumberyard, he seemed pained to help me. Once I told him what I would like to purchase, he mumbled something and walked away. After 15 minutes I just left. I don't write reviews very often, but felt I should chime in on the recent experience I had with TW Perry. I am a huge fan of local, small businesses, and try to patronize these types of businesses whenever I can. I loath "big box" stores like Home Depot, but must admit that I end up going to them because they are more convenient (I live 5 minutes from one). In this case, I needed some custom interior (slab) doors, and I did visit HD first to see what they could do for me. They told me that they didn't cut doors to size, so they couldn't help me. Enter TW Perry. I made initial contact by phone with an individual (Henry) and told him what I needed. He told me what measurements he would need to place the order, and I then went off to get the measurements. I sent him an e-mail with all the measurements, and then didn't hear back from him. About a week later (or so) he left me a voice mail message with the price of the doors. It then took me several WEEKS to make contact with him again in order to place an order...sent several e-mails and called numerous times. Finally I reached him again, and he said something about his voice mail not working. He gave me the final price for the doors (which had to be cut and prepped for hardware). It took a few iterations to get the quantity correct (I needed 2 doors) but I finally got a quote and he told me about when the doors would be ready. About a week later I got a phone call telling me the doors were ready. Both Henry and someone else from TW Perry called me to tell me they were ready. So I went in today (this morning) to get them. I was there right when they opened (at 6 am). I stood in line for a few minutes (they had 2 cashiers working out of maybe 8 or 10 cashier stations). When I got up to the cashier, he said that I should go to "Bay 5" and give them the order, and they would take my credit card for payment. I had to drive over to the back of the adjacent warehouse to find Bay 5 and no one was there. I approached a gentleman further back in the warehouse and he asked if I had a custom order and I told him I did. That gentleman got on a radio and tried to get someone to help me. I heard him speak to a couple different people, one of them saying to him that he was "with a customer and would be there soon". At least he tried. After waiting a few minutes someone showed up and took my paperwork and then found the doors. They were ready and I took a quick measurement to verify they were right. They appeared to be. He then said that I would need to go back to the main store to pay. (?) The cashier had told me to pay at "Bay 5". Anyway, I drove BACK to the main store, waited in line another 5 minutes, and then saw the cashier again. He didn't understand why I was back, but then took the paper and was about to ring it up. I put in my credit card and noticed that the charge was $50 more than the quote I received!!! I mentioned this to the cashier and he said he did not know why. He tried to call someone to verify the charge, and then told me that it was a shipping charge that was added. I was there to pick it up and my address wasn't even on the order. Why would I be charged for shipping? I canceled the credit card transaction and he then keyed it in for $50 less. I paid the correct amount then by credit card. He told me that he would straighten it out with Henry later. With that finally done I drove back over to get the doors. Someone at "Bay 5" handed the doors down to me from the loading dock, I put them in the back of my vehicle and went on my way. Something that should have taken maybe 10 minutes took OVER HALF AN HOUR. This is mainly why they are receiving 3 stars from me. Given all this, the staff that I interacted with there were friendly and were trying to be helpful, but it is obvious, given my whole experience, that they have some challenges in the area of customer service. If they cannot offer a better ordering and pick-up experience, then most people will opt for the "big box" stores over smaller businesses like this one. I really hope they will seek to improve things, I really do. read more

I tried calling this TW Perry in Silver Spring, MD to get a quote and make an order, but no one bothered to answer the phone. I could hear the operator asking both salesmen, one who was named Samuel, to answer the phone, but instead they kept allowing it to go to voicemail. Everytime I've been in the store there's always been someone sitting at their desk, so there's no reason why one of the two salesmen couldn't answer the phone. Unfortunate such poor customer service cost them a large sale. Will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Everything came WHEN THEY SAID IT WOULD... and boy did they deliver! Their guy set down massive palettes of supplies like fine china on a dining table! Everyone we interacted with was great, and our project was quite unique. We got VERY competitive prices, but more importantly EXCELLENT support from their teams. Worst sales staff ever. Once you go into the building people completely ignore you. You try to get help form the staff and they just won't help. I asked one of the cashiers if he could give us a hand with a product to which he answers in a very rude way " I'm helping a customer right now " and guess what? , nobody was there with him . Anyway he did promise to help us out later ( which he never did btw). Anyway, we placed our order with this man that wasn't helpful at all, he could not even help us see the trim options that they had, he just pointed the way to the isle to help ourselves I guess. After we had ordered the lumber that we needed we went out to pick up our product in the lot behind the store, the man that was supposed to help us started yelling at us for no reason at all. Somebody else from the store jumped right in the yelling and told us that his coworker is always like that. What kind of customer service is that ? Ordered a custom door and hardware in second half of December. Was told to expect 3-4 weeks for production and delivery. Eventually called them again in February and it appeared the order wasn't placed with the factory. During subsequent call we heard they had the door but not the hardware. But they had told us weeks ago they had the hardware but not the door. Told us they would deliver today, but no call or delivery yet at 4:00 and no answer at the store. read more

When I arrived the tool was not at the store. These were both at the old location - perhaps they have improved since. A big fat Zero is the real rating of this lousy excuse for a hardware store. I live 3 blocks from the store purchased several items and when I presented the coupon on the flyer they didn't honor it. I remember the Perry's from decades ago. They were honest and decent folk. I find that all their attention is focused solely on contractors and treat the locals with indifference and disdain and dishonesty. I will go to Strosnider's or Hardware City where customers are treated fairly and honestly. What a lousy addition to our neighborhood. Absolute disaster. These guys seem to botch everything they touch. It was not my choice to deal with them, as my contractor had a long-standing relationship, but even he was at his wits end. They had to re-do a full set of custom interior doors after drilling out the doorknob holes incorrectly. They took months to initially place an order for an exterior door, but the piece that arrived was completely wrong. Their answer--after weeks of trying to contact them--was that it was not possible to make what I had ordered. Since that curt explanation made no sense, I called the door manufacturer directly, and learned that, yes, of course it was possible to make what I wanted. TW Perry had simply failed to convey the details of what that would entail, and simply placed an order for a different design, hoping that I wouldn't notice. Through all of these problems, my contractor eventually grew exasperated with TW Perry's failure to respond to his messages, and asked me to reach out directly, but of course I couldn't get a response either. Not sure how this business model works, but I certainly wouldn't do business with them. read more
