Luis worked magic on my husband's Italian leather dress loafers! (I wish I had a "before" photo to pair with this stunning result.) The soles were nearly worn through and the wood heels were showing their age. Luis gave new life to the leather and colored the heel to perfectly compliment the dark brown. I've had these boots for 17 years, and as you can see I've put them through a lot. Before that they belonged to my mom and all told they are 20-25 years old. I pulled the heels off about 10 years ago and had wore the sole nearly through. Last week I finally got them re-soled! They are more comfortable than the day I got them and thanks to the complimentary leather treatment and shine they look better than the day I got them too. Staff was very friendly and I couldn't have asked for a better result. I was worried it would be really expensive to re-sole these and was pleasantly surprised by the price. I needed to get work ready which included getting a couple of pairs of shoes stretched a bit so they don't rub across the top of my foot. Getting them stretched is way better than going to the mall and paying more for new shoes in my opinion. The guy behind the counter was ok. Not friendly, but not rude either as reported by others. That doesn't bother me at all since I don't feel like talking all the time. My shoes were promised after 4 pm on a Thursday and I decided to pick them up on a Saturday. I arrived at 9:15 as I had a ton of errands to get to. Lo and behold, the place was not open. Huh! That's weird. Another person was waiting for them to open as well. I decided to come back later; inconvenient but understandable. Anything could have happened. Came back a few hours later and was in and out quickly. Shoes are perfect. Here are a couple of tips based on numerous signs posted around the space: 1) bring your ticket when you pick up your items. It seems it caused them some amount of angst if you don't have it. 2) they will take your credit card if the charge is over $10 only. There were at least 3 signs posted announcing this. My favorite pair of riding boots busted the zipper so I took them over to my neighborhood boot repair place, Abe's, to see what could be done about it. The guy behind the counter explained the process and quoted me $25 for the repair. The problem was I was on a short timeline (flight left in 3 days) and he wouldn't give an option for a quicker turnaround. Most places will just tack on $5 and let you pick it up early but I donno... either they don't do this or he didn't want to. BACKGROUND The original Abe was a character and a great cobbler. He was a guy that came from "The Old Country" wherever that may be. He was from a long line of cobblers, and was disappointed that his children weren't following in his footsteps, although very proud that he was able to provide a better life for his family than he had. Abe only needed his workbench and tools. He remembered everyone and didn't really have a "system" to keep track of orders, other than his memory. The place looked crazy, but if you knew Abe, it all made sense and his devotion to excellent work spoke for itself. SERVICE EXPERIENCE I recently went in and the place looks basically the same, except Abe is gone. He died in 2008. The current owners have been there years. It didn't feel like the same shop. Whatever, I paid (yes, you pay upfront) and left my shoes. When I got them back, I was satisfied. The price was too high. The service was ok. The location is close to my house. CONCLUSION I used to look for reasons to stop by Abe's. Now, I replace shoes instead of repairing them. Very disappointed with the customer service Luis , the owner has or should I say lack of customer service. I took a pair of shoes during Covid and when I went to pick up they had last one of them. Not a big deal they told me they would call me once that had been found I never got a call however I decided to give them a second chance and take another pair of shoes to get fixed. I have used this place three times in the past two years. The first two times were to get new liners put in shoes that I had bought from China. The first time I went in I showed them that the sole liners had begin to slip and without warning the guy at the counter ripped the liner out and I was told I needed new ones.. if I didn't before I certainly did now. It was brash and abrupt and could have been done with more tact. But the shoes came back with new liners for $20 and the work lasted the life of the shoes both times. This third time was different, the same guy wasn't as harsh with me but he did push me to get an estimate for work I did not ask for. I bought a pair of shoes that did not have the holes punched all the way through for the laces because they were slip ons. I was told I should also get metal eyelets but I would be called with an estimate for that. I was called and the gentleman left me a voicemail to call him back. When I called back I was asked to wait while he assisted other customers. There is no "hold" on their phone, he just placed the phone down on the counter and I could hear him assisting the other customer. When that customer left he did NOT pick the phone back up to help me. I finally gave up and hung up, I called back an hour later and the phone was still off the hook. I called back an hour after that and got the estimate for the eyelets which I declined. When I picked up my shoes today I was horrified to find that the holes they punched for laces are crooked and not evenly spaced! Why? How do you mess it up so bad when the shoes had a guide for where to punch the holes? Did they not have the correct size hole punch and did not center it at the bottom?? I really hoped that when I put laces in these shoes that they cover up the mistake but they didn't and they look dumb. What is even more infuriating is that I can clearly see the guide cut outs where it was SUPPOSED to be punched. I cannot believe I paid for this. I changed my review from two stars to one because on closer inspection this work is out right careless and I will be taking the shoes back in. Update 2/12/18: I went back in today for the third time, they have had my shoes for a week since I complained about the work and they have done nothing to fix it. I explained to them on the phone last week that I would like them to fix the bad work they did or I would be requesting a refund. My shoes have not been fixed. I spent 20 minuets in the shop with the black gentleman as he talked down to me and insisted that them punching the hole crooked was a mistake made by the manufacturer - impossible, I have photos to prove it. The black gentleman told me he did not "have the power" to give me a refund and if the Hispanic guy had not fixed it already that he was not going to fix it because "that's his nature". WHAT?! Is this real life? How is this business model working for them? Denying that their work is bad, talking down to clients, insisting that it's my fault these NEW, never worn, shoes look like this. I tried to be reasonable with these people and I even gave them a chance to make it right and they won't, and now they won't give me a refund either. Please go elsewhere, please. Update 2/26/18: They have misplaced my shoes and cannot find them. Update 3/5/18: They have had a chance to make this right and fix their mistakes for almost a month and they have done nothing. I have taken the shoes they messed up and was not given a refund. I was however given a FAKE receipt when I asked for one, it says that I paid zero dollars when, in reality, I PREPAID $20 in cash to this place. So shady! I tried this place despite the bad reviews because I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, I can deal with three star customer service but one star work will not be tolerated. P.S.
