That said, the portions are big, which explains the price. I came in absolutely starving (no breakfast) and still couldn't finish my plate. It's a lot of food! It was pretty empty at noon on a Saturday, which made us a little skeptical, but the food quality really speaks for itself. Ambiance is nice, music from the radio, chill servers giving you total autonomy for your order via the iPads placed on each table. I personally thought the thick noodles were well cooked and the curry was very flavorful. I wish they provided more katsu on the side since I did pay a bit extra for it. The only major issue I noted is that the melted cheese in my noodle curry clumped together into a giant ball and felt that I was eating noodles with a side of cheese. Would recommend getting a rice dish instead as then you can better assimilate the melted cheese with the rest of your meal. TLDR: terrible food. Even worse service. Go somewhere else!! Came here on a rainy Sunday night, around 8pm for dinner as a group of 6 people. This place has been on my list of places I've wanted to go to for a while and I was excited after reading all the positive reviews. Upon entering, there was no one to greet us and we stood near the door hoping to be seated. It was clear they were understaffed. After about 5 minutes, we were able to spot a staff member who could help us. I walk over to ask him how long the wait is for a table for 6 people. However, he immediately yells at us for water that's from our dripping umbrellas. This put us all in a bad mood like Hmm... sorry we can't control the weather. It rains. Water drips from umbrellas. It's nature. So he tells us to put our umbrellas on the floor by the front door before walking in. Clearly there are unspoken rules for people who aren't even sure if they're staying yet. And clearly they can't handle ten drops of water. With peace in mind, I put my umbrella down and then step in to ask again how long the wait would be for 6 people. He goes very rudely, "I don't know. Around 30 minutes or so. Do you want to wait?" I tell him, "One minute please. Let me ask my friends." So I go back to my friends who are still by the door. I quickly tell them about the interaction and the possible half hour wait. We were going to go somewhere else and I'm sure they caught on. So immediately they tell us they have a table ready. So strange that the table that was already clear, they told us it would be a half hour wait and then when we're ready to leave that they would offer it to us. It was a table all the way in the back of the restaurant and let me tell you... it smelled like absolute garbage. We were thinking it was the end of the night, they had garbage piled up in the back of the kitchen ready to be put out on the street or something. We try to ignore the smell and we order our food. I ordered the vegetable curry noodles as I love noodles and I wanted to try their highly rated curry. I chose spicy level 2. The food itself wasn't spicy and there was barely flavor in the curry. It was actually very bland and seemed watered down, despite the dark color of the flavor. There was a decent amount of vegetables in it- at least enough to be expected. But that's about it. Mind you, we were trying to eat with the garbage smelling table or area we were placed at. Besides the staff member who I encountered prior to being seated, the waiter who placed our orders and filled our waters for us was actually very nice. He was very efficient and very kind. If only the first guy could learn some manners from the waiter. Having bad weather or being short staffed is not a reason to take out your temper on potential customers since you work in a field that deals with other people and we were nothing but kind. After our meal that most of us didn't finish, we pretty much rushed out of there and once leaving the table, it was obvious that only that back portion of the restaurant had that terrible odor. Leaving the restaurant was a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively. Would I come back? Would I recommend this establishment to anyone? No. At least not anytime soon. Please have your staff treat customers more nicely and if you know there's a table in an area with terrible odor, please leave it empty. Don't just sit people there just because they're about to leave. Also, add more flavor to your food. Would I give this place another try? It's a possibility to give it another try and hopefully have a better experience. But like I said, not anytime soon. There's so many other restaurants in Ktown where they have better mannered staff and where the food actually tastes great. I'm rating Abiko Curry 5 stars solely on the food and it being the best East Asian curry rice specialty restaurant in the Northeast. My experience has been ups and downs with this place, particularly the service over the years, but I keep coming back for the food and that means something, especially for a fan of curry rice. The style is Japanese, so you order a base sauce and order toppings to your liking. It's does slightly lean Korean-Japanese fusion, as you could tell with the curry pastas and some of the toppings. Should really be of no surprise that Koreans can make Japanese food though, as people seem to forget just how many Korean-Japanese people work in the food industry in Japan, probably because of issues I don't want to get into here. Some people mistaken Abiko as Korean curry, but Korean-style curry typically has more tumeric, meaning it looks more yellow and is a bit more naturally spicy that's different from capsaicin powder added to up the heat level, and Korean curry typically has stuff like vegetables and a choice of protein mixed in. In my latest visit, we ordered the Chicken Curry Set and an Eggplant Cream Curry Pasta. I had my doubts about the eggplant one, but it really works as long as you don't hate eggplant. Chicken Katsu was good, herb chicken curry was especially tasty with the garlic flakes, and croquettes are one of my favorite fried food. I ordered mine spicy level 3, but don't feel obligated to add any heat at all, since it tastes good regardless. Sadly, seems entrees no longer come with miso soup and radish kimchi, and ordering extra toppings doesn't come with shredded cabbage salad. Probably because people not understanding the culture kept complaining that it wasn't the best miso soup they've ever had or something, not realizing that the freebie is just served as a good, warm alternative to water for downing the food. Why can't we ever have nice things? Lastly, one thing I do wish for is for there to be more set options, such as the Cream Curry Pasta set having the choice to order different types of Cream Curry Pasta with an upcharge or being able to order the Couple's Set with Chicken Katsu instead of Pork Katsu. This is one of my FAVORITE food spots in NYC. Before trying this place, I never had Japanese curry and so when I finally got to eat at Abiko Curry in July 2022, I was mind-blown. I got their Japanese curry with vegetables and a side of cream cheese croquettes. The flavors of the curry tasted so delicious in my mouth, it was like a mix of savory, sweet, and spicy. I was able to select the spiciness level, which was helpful because I cannot eat high amounts of spice anymore. They also give you a huge portion, I felt so full afterwards. The cream cheese croquettes were kind of bland so I wouldn't get that again. The second time I went was in December 2022 with my friend and I got the same thing except instead of the croquette, I got their pork cutlet with cheese.
