It's a little bit outdated inside and very simplistic, but as long as it's clean and the food is good, that's what matters. While Hyo Dong Gak has pretty good jjambong (seafood spicy noodle soup) and jjajangmyun (black bean sauce noodles), I would avoid any of their meats if possible. I got the combo of the seafood spicy noodle soup + chicken and garlic pepper sauce ($22.95) and was very excited to see how large the portion ended up being. It looked very promising and I was excited to eat. Starting off with the good: the noodles were actually very tasty. It's spicier than i'm used to, but I love spice so I enjoyed it. It felt like the bowl was never ending with all the noodles and seafood. However, the soup is definitely on the salty end though so be warned. Now, here's where it gets bad. The chicken was absolutely inedible. I'm not sure if I got a bad batch or not but the chicken piece was so small and all you could taste was the batter. It was not cooked thoroughly and every single piece I tried was gummy and didn't taste like meat at all. I hate wasting food, but I genuinely had to spit it out and I stopped eating it after that. I really wish I would've just gotten the noodles on it's own. My stomach also hurt all day afterwards and I couldn't move out of my bed. I went to Hyo Dong Gak, which is right outside of ktown NYC and ordered their $19 split bowl, which came with a big portion of jjangmyeon and a big portion of seafood jampong. The noodles were perfectly chewy without being too soft. The jjangmyeon had the right amount of sauce and came with tiny pieces of pork. The jampong had a TON of seafood including big shrimp with the head on, baby shrimp, mussels and octopus. For $19 you really can't go wrong, that's almost unheard of in NYC! The restaurant was crowded on a random Tuesday evening, but I didn't have to wait long to get seated and I never felt rushed. Pretty solid place with a few things that I had issue with. But above all else it should be noted that we came in when they were 20mins from closing, and they still allowed us to sit, order before the kitchen closed, and then they rapid-fire served this food to us. Not more than 5mins after we ordered did the first dish come out, and then the food KEPT coming out like it was dimsum. It was exactly what we needed since my cousin had to eat and leave quickly before the parking garage closed. Food wise, nothing really stood out, but nothing was awful either. The seafood pancake was a standout-- super crispy and gave a look as if it were scallion pancake, but it was packed with seafood. It definitely lacked flavor on its own, though, and it was much better when we dipped it in the dumpling sauce. I also felt somewhat bamboozled because we got two orders of jjajangmyun to share between all of us, and the waiter recommended getting another order and to add extra noodles to each of them. We did that and ended up with way too much jjajangmyun. I also found it to be sweeter than I wanted it to be. We are from LA and this was our first visit to Hyo Dong Gak. I honestly did not have high expectations but wow, was I wrong. We had 탕수육 (sweet and sour pork), 유산슬 (sea cucumber and beef) along with 짜장면 (black bean noodles) and 삼선짱뽕 (seafood spicy noodle soup). You can tell that the chef here is an OG Korean Chinese chef. There was absolutely no pretentious fusion presentation nor taste. It was absolutely authentic in flavor and presentation. I was so glad to have chosen Hyo Dong Gak rather than more modern places like Shanghai Mong. The price was very reasonable as well. 3 things about this place: 1. My sister and I seem to pass by this place, which I've been craving Korean-Chinese food for a while. This place was packed and seemed like a good idea to go try the food to see how the dishes were. They sat us down quickly and the danmuji (pickled radish) and kimchi came out before ordering. No raw onions with the black bean paste which I understand. 2. Half jjajangmyun (Black Bean Noodle) and half jjamppong (Spicy Seafood Soup), small Tangsuyook (Korean style Sweet and Sour Pork), Half Kkanpoonggi (Chicken with Spicy Pepper and Garlic Sauce) and Half Jjamppong, and Jjajangmyun (Black Bean Noodle) were ordered and came out at a reasonable time. 3. All the dishes tasted good and and fresh. Jjamppong had a lot of seafood inside along with clean aftertaste from the broth. Tangsuyook was still crispy after the sauce was poured. Other places would become soggy but this place still had the crisp and good amount of flavor. However, the service was terrible and forgot one of the dish that was ordered. Crowded place with 1 server taking orders and serving plates. Had to ask couple of times for items and they were still not delivered.. had to ask another person who seemed to be the owner of the restaurant. Overall, food was good but service was AWFUL. Look, Joong Koog Jip in Flushing is my #1 spot for jjajangmyeon, jjampong, and the combined split bowl. By a long shot. But sometimes it's just not logical to take a two-hour train and bus ride for some noodles. (At least that's what people tell me. Not sure I agree.) That's where Hyo Dong Gak comes in. When I'm craving those black bean noodles, their version mostly does the trick, even if the noodles aren't as great as JKJ's. Sadly, the jjampong lacks spiciness and flavor. I'm not really a fan of the tangsuyuk either, which has too much pineapple and is therefore too sweet. And they don't serve kkanpungyuk, the more savory version. But yeah. Note: Should have updated a while back. Anyway, with the other Korean Chinese place that I used to frequent going to closing, I have been here a few more times. Special note to their baijiu which has a strong Chinese alcohol. For some reason they serve a rather large portion in a sake container for 10$. In other words you're getting a sake size portion/5/6 shots of an alcohol which is 38% ABV or something similar which is a rather good deal that could be split. I don't remember the exact baiju but judging by the flavor profile, I assumed it was a strong aroma. Anyway super strong alcohol aside, I had a combination of Tangsuyuk and Jajangmyeon/. The former is sweet and sour beef or pork in some places and it was quite tasty. The latter is black bean sauce noodles. While I prefer the latter at some other places (in my opinion the sauce here isn't thick enough and I prefer the noodle texture some other places,) it is still tasty and worth it for price. Found this place as it was close to my hotel. I tried their shu mai which seem to just be steamed frozen ones and their Korean fried chicken special. The fried chicken was really good, I had the soy one and it tasted really good. You also get kimchi and pickled radish which is a nice touch. Got the jajangmyeon and jjampong half and half lunch special as that seemed to be what most people were ordering. On other tables I mostly saw tangsuyuk, jajangmyeon and jjampong dishes. The jajangmyeon was super saucy (just the way I like it) and there were a few pork pieces too. The noodles were nicely cooked and the sauce grabbed onto the noodles well. I had asked for my jjampong to be just mild spicy and it was just that. There was a decent amount of seafood (mussels, shrimp, octopus) and the soup tasted pretty good. There was also a random assortment of veggies in soup. Service was pretty minimal, I think most people come to this place to just eat their food then leave. The fried dishes do get soggy after a while, so it may be a better idea to ask for the sauce on the side. 3) Noodle in brown sauce in a cast iron pot (for 2 people) ($24.95) Love love this noodle, but this was toooooo salty and strong taste. Later, you might want to add some rice to go with it. 4) Noodle in spicy seafood soup - ($14.95) another typical noodle along with the brown sauce one. Clearly authentic Chinese/Korean fare. Large Korean clientele. Staff are all Korean. Pretty long line for a Friday evening - but still, wait time was less than 30 minutes. Sit, and they bring you nice cold water and 2 cups. You can also ask for barley tea (it's called bo-ree cha in Korean) but I wouldn't recommend it. It was brewed bland and tased of tap water when I had it. The great thing about this place is that they cater to that mindset of 'I want to try everything.' They have the half and half jjampong and jjajangmyeon. Jjampong is on the spicy side and pretty flavorful. The seafood it comes with is not too high quality - frozen shrimp, that kind of stuff. But the noodles, soup and vegetables are great. It's a decent portion for a half order - could count as a light lunch. The Jjajangmyeon is a little sweet but not overly so - there's also an underlying flavor that I can't quite put my finger on it. It makes it a little interesting. The meat pieces are good quality and sized pretty well - about a square inch each. Noodles on both hold their texture well - but not that elevated level of chewy/bouncy that is usually sought after in these dishes. As an aside, the 3rd dish that usually comes with this fare is tansuyuk. It's fried pork pieces in a sweet sauce - they're to die for honestly. But typically if they're served in the sauce the sauce is just so thick that it ruins the crispiness of the pork pretty quickly. So many people do order the pork and the sauce separately. Strangely, the waitress told me that if I ordered a combo including the pork dish she wouldn't be able to serve the sauce separately because she'd have to get another bowl... but she did this same exact thing for the table next to us, just for the larger size portion. So if you get the combo you can't have the sauce separate but you can if you order the regular size. Even though in both cases you'd have to use another bowl. The logic doesn't quite make sense but they're quite within their rights to make up whatever rule they want. Sad that I couldn't try the tansuyuk - maybe later when I come with a bigger party. read more
