Shanghai Mong was a disappointing experience. I went to check out Koreatown in NYC and wanted to sit, eat a bit, and have some drinks with friends. We ordered three food items for a group of six and then tried to order more soju, but they kept getting annoyed that we were not ordering more food. We were already full and just wanted to drink. Even though we were not drunk at all and only had two bottles of soju total between six people, they refused to serve us more and eventually asked us to leave. This is a great spot for dinner if you ever find yourself in K town with no reservations and 40+ minute wait time. The restaurant had a nice vibe attracting a mix of older and younger adults. Food was also pretty good, and there is a variety / fusion of asian food on the menu. I asked for an extra container for food I wanted to take home and because I ask for something prior the waiter got annoyed and said is that all you need. I wanted to find a nice restaurant that was affordable in Korea Town and this was a great choice for that. The interior was colorful and cute. My friend and I were given comfortable booth seating by the entrance. The place offered combination specials for around $20, and I selected the one with Sweet and Sour Pork, Jja Jang Myun (black bean noodles), as well as Seafood Soup, which I requested to be mild. This came in a lovely plate with separations and middle part, which had a pork fried dumpling on top. The dumpling was really well made, had a nice crunch, and plenty of meat filling. My favorite dish was the Sweet and Sour Pork, made with pineapple, onion, red and green pepper. This had beautiful depth of flavor from the both salty and sweet sauce. The pork was lightly breaded and perfectly crispy, while still being tender and succulent. The addition of the veggies and fruit added a welcome fresh element. The Seafood Soup was filled with shrimp, mussels (which I don't eat), onion, and glass noodles. The shrimp was juicy and well seasoned. The Jja Jang Myun had tons of black bean sauce, which was bold in flavor. Service was pretty good and everything came out in a timely manner. I saw someone try to run out on their bill. The restaurant charges you 3 dollars if you pay with a card by the way which I think is kinda shady. Came here last year and would've given it five stars then but alas! Things seem to have changed. Last year when I visited, it was slow and I had a long chat with the owner. She said she'd been at this location through thick and thin. When the panoramic hit hard, she was one of the first ones on the block to set up plastic barriers and sell takeout through a small window in it. She also proudly mentioned how author Min Jin Lee (author of Pachinko) had visited and how there was an article about her in the paper. I had the spicy jjajangmyeon twice in the span of 3 days at that time and the owner brought me extra spicy powder to kick it up even further. The noodles were yellow and oh so chewy and bouncy and just beautiful. The sauce wasn't too sweet, the meat was tender and delicious. Cut to now and the noodles are white instead of yellow. The sauce is blander and the spicy version isn't spicy in the least. I wonder what happened in the last year - I hope things go back to the way they were. As for the ambiance, it's got the vibe of a club. Music isn't playing too loudly, but it's there. There's a lot of neon lights and there's a bar at the end. Some cheesy decorations out front - it's an interesting take. I'm sure they bring in higher sales by leaning into the alcohol consumption. But it's not /really/ a club and doesn't really seem to be a place where people go for a crazy night out partying and drinking. read more

TLDR: This isn't a place to enjoy good food. It's a place you come to when everything else is closed and you're hungry after a night out. I've been here twice. I did not review it the first time because I thought I came on an off day. Both times I ordered the jajangmyeon and both times I was disappointed. Its not TERRIBLE, but it certainly lacks flavor and the noodles didn't have any texture. It's not just the jajangmyeon; I've also had the mapo tofu, naengmyeon, and fried Shanghai dumplings. The mapo tofu was not spicy or flavorful, and the naengmyeon tasted watered down. The dumplings became soggy after a little bit because of a large amount of sauce poured over them. All of the sauces were thick and viscous. The major trend in each dish is a lack of texture and flavor. They kind of make up for this fact with portion size, but nothing to make you excited to return. If you're looking for good Korean food or food in general, I would go somewhere else. I would only return here if it was late night and I had no where else to go. They took our temperatures when we arrived, and there was hand sanitizer at the host booth.
