We put our name down, grabbed a drink next door, and were seated in about 15 minutes, which felt very reasonable for a busy Midtown evening. The space is bright, clean, and casual, with a lively but comfortable energy. Service was efficient and friendly, and dishes came out at a steady, well paced rhythm. Dongbei cuisine comes from Northeastern China and is known for hearty, comforting food with bold flavors and generous portions. The dishes tend to lean savory and warming, with braises, stir fries, skewers, and classic sweet and sour preparations that feel especially satisfying. This was my first time trying Dongbei food, and I was particularly excited to finally try the famous Guo Bao Rou. We ordered the braised pork belly with potatoes, which was rich, deeply savory, and incredibly comforting, with tender pork and potatoes that soaked up all the sauce. The green pepper with tofu skin was one of the highlights of the meal. It was fragrant, slightly spicy, and full of texture. The garlic sautéed baby bok choy was simple, clean, and perfectly cooked, offering a nice balance to the heavier dishes. The Harbin style Guo Bao Rou lived up to its reputation, with a crispy exterior, tender pork inside, and a light sweet and sour glaze that was addictive without being overwhelming. The BBQ lamb skewers were juicy and well seasoned, the scrambled eggs with tomatoes delivered classic home style comfort, and the sliced beef in chili broth was aromatic, flavorful, and satisfyingly spicy, with tender beef throughout. Overall, everything we ordered was delicious, and the experience felt welcoming and satisfying. I live nearby and had been meaning to try this place since it opened about six months ago. On the plus side: the staff is very friendly, service is fast, and portions are generous. That's where my enthusiasm cooled. I was surprised to see other reviews raving about the spring rolls and dumplings. I avoid spicy food, but flavor shouldn't require heat. The dumplings were bland and cooled quickly, as if they'd come straight from the microwave. The spring rolls offered little beyond a fried aftertaste. The sesame shrimp was better, but overly sweet for my taste. The atmosphere mirrors the food: uninspired. On a cold day, every door opening brings in a blast of winter, and oddly, there was no unsweetened tea which is an unusual omission for a Chinese restaurant. I would give zero stars if I could. Avoid this place unless you want to wait an hour for your lunch and miss your meetings. I kept checking on my order because it was clearly forgotten -- they told me my order number was 79, yet they were sending out orders in the 130s while completely ignoring me. Their tiny restaurant was packed with frustrated customers who had also been waiting forever. It became obvious that they had missed most, if not all, orders in the order #70-80 range. And even after realizing this, they still weren't doing anything to prioritize or expedite those lost orders. They just kept pumping out new ones while the earlier customers were stuck standing around. When the owner finally came out and handed me "my" food, it turned out it wasn't even my order. They didn't just lose track -- they didn't even gave me the correct internal order number in the first place! That's how disorganized things were. Even then, there was no sincere apology. Instead, I got a list of excuses: the POS system "missed orders," someone called in sick, they were short-staffed, etc. If you know your system is dropping orders, why not fix the backlog first? One sick call-out doesn't explain an entire group of 10+ customers waiting nearly an hour. What really pushed me over the edge was the owner's attitude. He was impatient, defensive, and dismissive. When I said I would be leaving a negative review, his response wasn't an apology -- it was, verbatim, "do whatever you want." An absolute mess of an experience. Craving some Asian food near the Javitz Center, we found Dong Bei which delivered in quality and affordability. Their lunch specials were amazingly priced - many of the customers were Chinese which is a testament to how their food is authentic Chinese. We loved the ability to pick and choose what we wanted all from an iPad ordering machine with pictures. Dongbei is a relatively new casual Chinese spot in the Hudson yards area. It looks small from a glance but it's pretty decently sized with an additional floor in the back for a small group. They have a pretty wide menu of Chinese food including skewers to dry pot. They also have a ton of lunch specials where you can pick 2/3 dishes with rice for under $14. I tried the braised pork belly with potatoes rice special but was a little disappointed. The dish was soaking in oil and it tasted pretty standard for braised pork belly. I was also disappointed that there were no potatoes in the dish despite having it in the description. The service was pretty good overall given that the place was packed due to the holiday. read more

I was the only person there not speaking Chinese, a very positive sign. On her recommendation, I ordered the crispy pork tenderloin, which was in a tangy sauce flavored of vinegar and cilantro, with a slight garlic flavor. We ordered: Eggplant, green pepper, and potato: 5/5 my favorite, no notes Northeast pig trotters: 4/5 these were okay! Dong Bei has become one of my go-to's in the area whether it be for take out or dining in. I usually do take out but I have not had any complaints. Food is always consistent for me and the deals are always good (dinner deals). I have ordered from them a few times and usually try to get different dishes but I almost always revert to the beef dry pot and the eggplant dish. I recently dined in with a friend on a Friday night and was able to try other dishes (the shredded cabbage, sliced beef in chili broth, handmade pork & shive dumplings and the pork kidney dish). Good food portions, service was fine - no complaints. Pretty chill place to grab a bite. I would definitely be back again to basically try the whole menu haha. read more

I don't usually like to leave bad reviews, but my experience here was upsetting. I'm not sure if I came at an off time. Maybe they had a different chef. Maybe someone quit. But it seemed like it wasn't just our table who was waiting for their food for a long time. Ordered the cabbage and their signature Harbin style pork. Got the cabbage right away but the pork came an hour late. The server said they were running out of batches...if that was the case, they should've just asked us to order something else. If it was good, I would've been OK. But it was not. It was mostly batter and hardly any pork. The pork in it was very thin and over fried. It was like the consistency of dried fish. It was like they took old or left over pork...breaded it, and fried it. I really hope they didn't use scrap pork, but that's what it tasted like. Been expanding around Hudson yards since moving here looking for some good eats. This place just opened up and it's a chill spot for some Chinese. The price is a little high, but 2 dishes could feed 3-4 people. The owner recommended the fried pork and I was skeptical because it looks like a dish tailored for American pallets, but it was crispy and had a tasty sour sauce. The mapo tofu was good, but will definitely ask for one with pork next time. The tofu was soft and it had Sichuan flavor but was lacking any heat. Overall I'm glad I found this place! A friend and I had lunch here today. Absolutely loved the food, very different from what we Americans think of when we think about Chinese food. We each got the lunch special, which is two dishes and rice, and then we shared. So we had fish, beef, pork, and shredded potatoes. Every dish was great. It's a tiny place but we had no trouble getting a table. Not what you would call atmospheric, but who cares with food this good. Very nice staff too. I stopped by here with a friend to grab some late night take out after a concert at Hudson yards. We got the mapo tofu, which was adjusted for spice, and the sweet and spicy pork. I like that the mapo was not too spicy but still tender and had the mala kick. The sweet snd spicy pork was a nice balance off various veggies (earwood mushrooms, bell peppers) and had a good meat to breading to sauce ratio. Also, I like the grain they use for their rice -- it's not quite Japanese but sticky and short grain. The food came out super fast and hot. Braised pork belly- I find it hard to locate the words to describe how good this was. I could obviously taste the five spice but something else about it just made it amazing. The pork belly, the potatoes, and the quail eggs were perfect. Vegetable lo mein- this is what lo mein should taste like. Perfectly seasoned with fresh vegetables and perfectly cooked noodles. Chicken fried rice- this was excellent! With a staple like fried rice, you don't expect much but this was such a delight. I wish I could've eaten more. We picked this restaurant for its good reviews and proximity to our Midtown hotel, after taking a red eye and spending the day walking around.
