We scheduled an appointment for my son as part of his treatment protocol, which included a refraction (vision test). During the appointment, the doctor performed the refraction, told us that my son's prescription had changed, and recommended that we look at new frames because his current ones looked too small. After looking at frames in the lobby, an associate gave us a price quote. The cost of the lenses was approximately four times what we've paid elsewhere in the past. While the office is free to charge whatever it wants for its products, we decided to purchase the glasses elsewhere and simply requested a copy of my son's updated eyeglass prescription. At that point, we were told we would have to pay an additional fee to receive the prescription because we were not purchasing glasses from their office. We explained that, under the FTC Eyeglass Rule, patients are entitled to receive their eyeglass prescription after a refraction without being required to purchase glasses from the provider. We were then told that if we didn't want to pay, we could return on another day so they could bill our insurance for the refraction instead. This made little sense to us because the refraction had already been performed during that day's visit. We left very concerned about why we would need to return another day for insurance billing after the service had already been completed. The doctor came into the lobby while this discussion was taking place. We explained that we were simply trying to obtain the written prescription he had just verbally given us. He apologized but said he didn't handle the billing policies and directed us back to the office manager. The office manager then told us that an ophthalmologist cannot perform a refraction or provide an eyeglass prescription, that only an optometrist can, and that no optometrist was working that day. We found this explanation confusing because ophthalmologists routinely perform refractions and prescribe corrective lenses. We then requested a copy of my son's medical record from that day's visit, including the prescription that had just been discussed. Initially, we were told that the records could not be provided. After we explained that patients have the right to request access to their medical records, we were then told the records would not be available for at least a week because the doctor had not yet documented the visit. The combination of being denied the written prescription, being told to return another day for insurance billing, and being told there was no documentation of a completed examination left us with significant concerns about the office's procedures. We were also supposed to receive a pupillary distance (PD) measurement, but after everything that occurred, we were simply told that wherever we purchased the lenses could measure it instead. Finally, another staff member suggested refunding our insurance copay and charging us directly for the examination instead, while acknowledging it would likely cost us more. Rather than resolving the issue, this only added to our confusion. Patients should be aware of the FTC Eyeglass Rule, which generally requires prescribers to provide a copy of an eyeglass prescription following a refraction. They always get it wrong. Dr. Batista got my right prescription and I'm doing better than ever. The practice is small, but always booked. That is why some people are complaining about the appointments. But his patients know how good he is and that's why they deal with the wait time. However, the appointments, go very quickly. I arrived for a full eye check up and eyeglass prescription update and the whole affair only took an hour. That is unseen in this kind of practice where Drs sometimes take 3-4 hours to do this procedure. This is not an emergency eye issue doctor, for that go to Bascom Palmer. This is a regular eye check and chronic issue doctor, and he is great. The staff is kind. The facility is clean. The technology is top of the line. The doctor is patient, and understanding especially with people who do not like seeing the eye doctor. (Like me.) I highly recommend him. He's the only eye doctor that my primary doctor goes to, and that says something! While I found the lower eyelid work to be exceptional, I have remained dissatisfied with the results of the upper procedure. During my 10-month follow-up, you noted excess skin but suggested it would improve as the muscles healed. However, my eyes still feel heavy and uncomfortable. When I called this past Monday to schedule an appointment, I was informed there would be a $200 consulting fee because you have changed practices and it has been over a year since the operation. Given that I paid approximately $16,000 out of pocket--in addition to insurance coverage--I find it unacceptable to be charged for a follow-up on a concern that has been ongoing since the initial recovery. I previously requested that your office discuss this with you, noting that I would share my experience online if this could not be resolved. Since I couldn't get one with my usual doctor in time. Big mistake on my end. I should have just waited. First and foremost, the doctor always has an attitude. Didn't do my presciption right and kept blaming it on where I did my glasses. I couldn't get them done at Lenscrafters because the prices are outrageous. So I did it with Warby Parker. I've never had an issue with them. She said it was a problem with this and that and this and that and I followed everything she said. Went in person, switch the glasses, got anti-glare, got them extra thin, etc. Yet I still couldn't see properly. She kept saying it was Warby Parker. Girl, I've been going for YEARS and have never had an issue. I had to go back three times, telling her each time, I still couldn't see. She kept saying it was fine and that a person with my high prescription and high astigmatism would never see perfectly. Well, I've never had an issue before so, what are you talking about? When I suggested the problem is the presciption she got so offended. As if that's so unheard of? You're a human being, mistakes will happen. Also every person working has an attitude give or take a few people. There was one woman there, who worked for the LensCrafters side of things, who was so sweet and always so patient (cause I kept trying to see if there were any glasses I could afford). Anyway, they kept blaming me for their mistakes. Then wanted me to pay another 50 dollars to change contact lense brands...that has never happened me before. Why would I have to pay another 50 dollars to change brands for my contact lenses, that's crazy. I don't have that kind of money and I could barely afford the glasses and contacts exam. I understand they have a way of doing things and I would have done it, if not for the having me pay more money. If they knew I would have to pay 50 dollars to change brands, why wouldn't the doctor just ask me what contacts I'm comfortable with?
