In early April our home/power lines were struck by lightening. It was about 5:30 pm and I had been…read morebusily sewing. Suddenly there was a bright flash that filled my family room and knocked out our power. The power stayed out for only a moment and then it came back on in brown out stage (less than 50 percent of normal strength). My husband was home and measured with his gauge that we were operating on 110 current, not 220 as normal. Within five minutes of the initial strike we lost power completely. My husband called the power company phone number and instead of getting the normal busy signal that happens when it's a wide spread outage he reached a person. He explained our situation to her and she asked if we were the only ones without power or had neighbors also lost power. Hmm... we're in the middle of the country and can only see two other houses. Since it was early evening there was no way to tell if they still had power. He was told that the outage would be looked into. About 1/2 hour after he called we heard voices in our backyard and saw two Shelby Energy workmen checking out the transformer that sits atop the power pole in the corner of our backyard. My husband wandered out to talk to them and followed along as they traced the source of the problem to the fuse for our house that exists on the high voltage wires on the opposite side of our neighbors property. Success, we had power again! Shelby Energy departed our house and responded to the next call on their list. THANKS FOR YOUR SPEEDY RESPONSE! Fortunately my husband was home. When the power came back on our upstairs and downstairs Heater/Air Conditioners were not working. Since they were both fairly new the thermostats have all the bells & whistles and give error codes for the malfunction. My husband went to the basement turned off the power, reset the units and then restored the power. Oops, another error code. Then our main floor of the house started filling with the smell of an electrical fire. My husband traced the origin to the garage where two battery charges (one for our tractor, one for an antique car) were "fried". He disconnected them and tried to reassure me that the problem was fixed. As the smell lingered in our house I insisted that he turn off the power to the malfunctioning AC Units. This saga will be continued in a following review.
