I just got the water heater fixed. Now the roof has issues. And since I live in California I'd have to schedule everything thousands of miles away and hope for the best. Unlike the water heater, I don't have a trusted roofer. In fact, I've never had a problem with my roof. So this was going to be a completely new experience for me. By the time I got the message it was already 6pm est. so I figured I'd just leave emails and phone messages and hope someone would call me back the next day. Yelp doesn't seem to have too many highly reviewed roofers in Raleigh, so I just called and emailed the top few that I saw. I did get the answering machine on every call except for Olde Raleigh Roofing. Daniel the owner answered even though it was after hours and he was very nice on the phone. He explained what might be the issue and said he'll contact my tenant directly and send some guys over. Once they were over there they would take pictures and email them to me with a price quote. If approved they would start work immediately. I thought great let's do it. I also wanted to get some other quotes and compare them, since I've never had a roof issue, but only 1 guy called me back (one of the larger roofers) and that was 4 days later. And even that guy didn't follow up with my tenant. Long story short, Daniels guys came out, took pictures, Daniel emailed me the pictures and gave me a quote. It sounded fair and came with a warranty, so I approved the work. After the work was finished Daniel sent me another set of pictures of the completed work and emailed me the invoice and warranty for me to sign and send back to him. The roof looked great in the pictures and my tenant was happy. It's already been a few months and no more leaks. I'm very happy. Overall the experience was great. There were some communication problems early on, which may have been due to the long distance and/or tenant. But in the end, everything was great and I'm really happy to now have a trusted roofer on my services list.

Prior to his visit to my house, he kept me informed on his arrival time. He arrived on time and immediately began the inspection. He first took pictures of the house and roof from ground level. Then he got on the roof and inspected it. He was very thorough and found a couple of small things to be done. He caulked around several vent areas and some bare nails He did find on my back gutter found where it had become separated from the siding. He fixed that also. He took his time and finished the inspection and repairs in less than 45 minutes. Afterwards, provided me his appraisal. He stated the roof is in very good shape and wouldn't need replacing for at least two or three years. The inspection was free and he didn't charge for the small repairs. PRICE The quote the gave me was in the middle of the pack compared to some other places I got estimates from so figured it was a decent value. SCHEDULING During the time the work was being done it was very difficult to get an answer about when they would perform the work. I had to keep emailing them to find out and finally after mentioning I might just go with another place they came through and did the job. WORK DONE The workers removed retaining wall stones around my flower beds without my permission. It would not have been a huge deal but I had spent a lot of time to level them and use cement and construction glue to hold them in place. I pointed that out and they offered to fix them but didn't. I had asked for them to install drip edge where it was missing on my roof. They did not install ANY drip edge and even left the old bits and pieces. I have seen more reputable places remove and replace all drip edge. When I pointed it out later, they tried to shove it up under the shingles but made a big mess out of it due to the gutters being in the way. It was such a huge mess that I had them just remove what they had done and I am left with no drip edge. They completely bent up the flashing that runs along the front of my house. I had just installed it a year or so earlier when replacing siding and it was perfect. It looks pretty horrible now and I will need to eventually replace it. I don't know why they didn't just replace it when the messed it up. One spot over a bay window was particularly bad. Instead of replacing it, after I pointed it out, the owner just came and installed a piece on top of the old mess so that it looked nicer. I ended up ripping that off and fixing their mess. STUFF FOUND LATER After some time I noticed a shingle was sticking up. I went on the roof and found that they did not nail in a nail all the way and it was causing the shingle to stick up. I fixed that myself. Worst of all, I was doing some work in my attic and noticed some plywood that had been water damaged. It was obvious that it was old damage. Part of the deal was that they would replace any bad wood and they just shingled right over this. WORKERS They did not speak English so it was almost impossible to talk to them without and I had to call or email the owner when there were issues. SUMMARY The shingles look nice and I haven't noticed any leaks so I assume that they will last me for awhile. But, the flashing work is horrible and the quality of the detail work is bad. I would never recommend this company or use them again in any capacity. I did not receive any warranty paperwork when the work was done. I am not sure how it works here but when I had my roof replaced in Texas I go a certificate so that if I had trouble I could get it fixed under warranty.

Owner Dave Wilson oversaw the entire job. He was very patient with me and was very attentive and responsive to all my questions and requests. The on-site manager, Russell, was present throughout the entire job and was extremely responsive. He kept everything moving smoothly, made sure all materials that were needed were there and in good condition, and the workers were ready to go. Russell went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly and that I was completely happy with all aspects of the Job. They replaced 3 skylights, caulked inside and did finish work. The skylights look great! They did not just drop the skylights in and hammer them down. They allowed me to look at placement and tweak it to where I was happy with how it looked. This attention to detail was carried through throughout the job. They replaced outside rotted boards around the doormer with PVC at no charge. They showed up early and stayed late every day. They worked very hard every minute they were here. All of the workers were very polite and pleasant. When they were finished, they did a thorough job of cleaning up and removing all waste materials and packaging from the premises. There was not a trace of debris anywhere. The overall job looks wonderful. It is so nice to work with contractors that truly care about the job and sincerely want to make sure that the homeowner is happy. I plan to use them to do repair/ replacement work on another property I own. I cannot recommend First Response roofing highly enough!
