The amenity offerings were quite basic -- shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a nail kit, and spray deodorant. Missing were the details that elevate a spa stay: shave kits, body lotion, face/hair products and toothbrush/toothpaste. For a property at this level, these extras matter. Overall, a wonderful anniversary experience and a solid 3.5/4 out of 5 from us. With a few upgrades this could easily be one of San Diego's best spa destinations.

My first experience, in 2016, had been excellent, and unfortunately, it just never was as good as the first time. The building is adorable. It is an old house that is quite beautiful in Banker's Hill with easy street parking. This time I walked in and was readily greeted. The people there are very nice and welcoming, especially the woman working the register that day. I was given some information to fill out and offered tea or water before my facial appointment. I was getting ready for a big event in my life, and therefore, wanted to pay some attention to skincare. My facial session was very comfortable and relaxing. My primary complaint (the same I had last time) was that at least half of the session was actually a head, shoulder, and arm massage. Yes, that was very nice, but I felt that very little of the session was directed to skincare. After all, I had booked a facial, not a massage. Also, they did some extractions, but when so little time (under two minutes) was devoted to extractions, I didn't understand the reason for doing it at all. I think my biggest issue was that I had some lotions that she was rubbing into my face before doing the scalp massage, and then she proceeded to rub so much greasy lotion into my hair. Unfortuantely, I had to go home and wash my hair instead of doing the errands I had intended to complete after my appointment. I really like the location and the relaxed feeling of this spa, but I just didn't end up very pleased with my service.

Eliza is not just an esthetician, she is a skincare sorceress, a glow guru, a pore whisperer. I walked in looking like I hadn't slept since 2012 and walked out shining brighter than my ex's bald spot under club lighting. My face felt smoother than a baby dolphin doing Pilates. Decadent is an understatement. I felt RICH. I felt RENEWED. Eliza, you are an angel sent from the skincare heavens and I am sending my besties to you ASAP. Now... onto the tragic subplot of this tale: the massage. I got a 50-minute deep tissue massage from Jen, which turned out to be 50 minutes of confusion, irritation, and emotional upselling. Deep tissue? More like deep disappointment. I asked her to focus on my shoulders, but she seemed determined to explore every other region of my body except the one I mentioned. And then came the upsells. Oh Lord, the upsells. Jen tried to sell me on everything short of a full-blown spiritual cleanse. The highlight -- or lowlight? -- was when she suggested Lipo Cupping because she noticed some cellulite on my buttocks and legs. Ma'am. I came here to relax, not to be emotionally assaulted by the ghost of bikini seasons past. I didn't ask for this kind of honesty. I wanted essential oils and vague affirmations -- not cellulite diagnostics. In summary: Facial with Eliza: 11/10. Worth selling a kidney for. Massage with Jen: No stars. I left with tight shoulders and a bruised ego. Would I return?
