The best vibe in town. Mat (Black Belt/ Nicest guy around) goes above and beyond at answering your calls, in person questions and making you feel great about coming to try out classes. I started out just wanting to get my son in jiu jitsu classes and he politely answered all of my questions on a holiday weekend! He is the awesomely nice person that you meet on the phone and I think that has poured that great vibe into the culture of the gym. All of the coaches have impeccable character and are very approachable. Garrick (Black Belt) is great at making the classes fun for kids with his animated interactions and it is one of the things that gets my son excited about going to class which is awesome. I sort of chose jiu jitsu for my kid so the fact that they can make it fun even if competing, winning is not a priority for you (or your kid) goes a very long way. I definitely joined up for the self defense and confidence that my kid would get out of it. Pete (Black Belt) puts up with my ramblings and is great at breaking down the technical and giving you extra tricks if you have mastered other pieces of maneuvers. Zach (Purple Belt/ Serious competitor) is always willing to show me things I think might help me with my game after his classes. As you can tell from above, Mat even encouraged me into trying out some classes myself and I am deeply hooked into the crazy rabbit hole that is grappling and jiu jitsu now. At over 40 I kind of assumed it was too late for me but it has been great. Having a great gym like Abstract where people are having fun and fostering a great community is hard to find and probably a big component of our families success in jiu jitsu. I will also counterpoint that if competition is your bag you can check out the bags of medals they have laying around in the office if you need proof they are working hard at real grappling from kids through adults and winning at competitions. Even as more casual players knowing the school is out winning in comps gives you confidence in the lessons/instructors. They also have great affiliations which pushes the culture even further because you have some other places where they know your school (which means less awkwardness) and you can get exposure to other players and styles which is very helpful. The entire atmosphere is a great mix of respect for the art while being a bit relaxed. Great class coverage of Gi (Kimono) and No Gi (No kimono) which I think is real important because you can't tell someone attacking you to please put on these pajamas before having it out. I really like the 6AM classes because I can get in some training and still get home to drive my kiddo to school in the mornings. This balances my workout, work and family better than in the past. After dieting and doing these classes I have lost something like 30lbs. The excitement for the sport helps me wake up before my alarm even rings, which was not something that was happening when I was doing weight training alone. My girls started Acro classes at Abstract several months ago. The amount of growth they have shown in both physical strength and mental confidence is something hard to sum up in just a few words. We love all of the coaches and have seen first hand how they care about their students and their well being (physically with making sure they have proper form and mentally by making sure the kids feel comfortable to talk to them instead of getting upset over things like forgetting what activity is at the next station!) My absolute most favorite part about Abstract though is how I've seen them be a part of and give back to the community. Not only do they support their local students by showing up to cheer them on at performances, they support the local schools by giving back. This is the best place in the Kingwood area that offers Jiu-Jitsu and Acrobatics. My daughter takes a conditioning/acro class and her skill set has grown so much along with her strength. I also get to watch the adults and children in the Jiu-Jitsu class while my daughter trains and I can see the attention they give to each student in that class, so well instructed! I have vouched for Abstract for years because they have been so good with my daughter and have taught her so much, I can't help but to share the word about this company to anyone who is looking for excellent training in such an amazing and positive environment. I am new to Jiu-Jitsu and started morning classes at Abstract with Coach Mat and Pete. I have mainly attended the morning 8 am classes with both coaches and they have been very thorough and patient with instructions. Honestly a bit nervous at first but even the higher belts in the class have been very welcoming and helpful in that I'm sure it may remind them of when they first started jiujitsu and wanted to better themselves. I have been attending BJJ classes regularly here for 2 years. I was made to feel welcome from the very beginning, which was appreciated given I was very overweight at the time and 42 years old and needed as much help and support as I could get. The coaches are outstanding and my fellow students have become like a second family to me. BJJ is a great way to get yourself in shape and have incredible fun in the process -- and Abstract really has created a special atmosphere that helps you succeed regardless of fitness level and age. 10/10. Lots of jujitsu reviews on here, but in addition to that, their acro programs are outstanding! I have two daughters that practiced acro in multiple settings before starting at Abstract. It wasn't until working with Coach Pete and Coach Mat that they were successful in advanced tumbling. Their method and approach to teaching is second to none. Abstract is a fantastic gym that I cannot recommend enough. They offer adult classes in the morning and at night, as well as a women's only class on Monday's and Wednesdays. They also have four nights of kid's classes, with a work out area for member's use at any time. You will absolutely grow your game at Abstract because all of the coaches are so excellent.
