I tried to find the good but only found it with the spicy salsas they give you with the chips. Oh yeah, and the chips weren't greasy, and that summed up as the only things I liked about this place. Before I continue about the food, I ask this: How many servers had to walk by our table (in high traffic area) to notice both of our glasses were completely empty for anyone to notice? 5. The answer is 5. Oh wait, no one noticed and even when our server walked by, we had to wave at her and ask her for refills. And we sat at the edge of the bar area right where you walk in. Yay for service. Now onto probably one of the worst Tex-Mex I've had. I decided to go for the pick 3 enchilada course: spinach with cream sauce, chicken with green chile sauce, and chicken with queso. Spinach was mixed with some sort of cheese/queso sauce that tasted like a mistake, and the cream sauce on top was a cheese creamy thing that put a shame on spinach enchiladas. Chicken was very bland and the sauce toppings were not at all good. At least the tortillas were decent. To make it worse, their pappas were flavored mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes. Just say that's what it was so I could be aware. Not a recommend at all. Hubs had the chimichanga and for the price, it was such a disappoint. We thought we may be wowed by this place, but nope, not the case. Our appetizer Calamari was decent, but that and the salsas didn't garner enough credit to make up for the terrible entrees. After reading mixed reviews we decided to try for ourselves and we are VERY GLAD we did! The SERVICE was EXCELLENT and our server, Carlos, was not only attentive but helpful with selecting our meals. We started with the very flavorful salsa varieties. I ordered an El Jefe margarita at the suggestion of Carlos. This is a MUST TRY! We recently ordered the full buffet service from Abuelos' catering menu for our company holiday lunch and it was a huge hit! Abuelos' catering staff were prompt, courteous, and professional, and the catering setup was perfectly done. We setup in our large conference room so that our small staff could have plenty of social distancing, and everyone had their own basket of chips, salsa trio, queso, and salad dressings. Our selected menu consisted of Los Mejores de la Casa (bacon wrapped tenderloins with bacon-wrapped-jalapeno-stuffed grilled shrimp,) a garden salad with grilled chicken, cheese enchiladas, and was complimented by Mexican rice, and Espinacha (spinach and cheese casserole) and Papas con Chile. Whoever thought of adding queso to mashed potatoes is a GENIUS! So delicious!! The quality and taste of every item was outstanding, and we spent a lot of time debating which of the three delicious salsas was the best! Personally, the bacon-wrapped grilled shrimp were my favorite, and I will definitely be going back to Abuelos in-person to have these again! The desserts were very decadent and beautifully presented. Again, every single option we offered - Flan, Dulce De Leche cheesecake, and Tres Leches cake, were raved about by all. We will definitely be using Abuelos again for our catering needs, and dining at the restaurant in-person, as well! read more

The best way I can describe this place is that it's similar to Los Cucos (price point wise) but with a more upscale feel. The restaurant is clean, modern, and cozy. Our waitress was incredibly kind, accommodating, and helpful. She gave us a full rundown of the menu and told us all about their different salsas and explained the differences in all of them. Damn, i hate to be THAT guy for this review, but here goes. There was a lot of hoopla surrounding the opening of this restaurant here in the Katy area and being that yesterday was our 2 year anniversary, i figured a new Tex-Mex restaurant would be a great place to go. As far as the ambiance is concerned, obviously it being a new establishment makes it a pretty nice place to go. The waitress we had was attentive and friendly and did her job taking our orders. We got there just in time (7pm is the end of Happy Hour here BTW) for the Happy Hour drinks and ordered a Grandeza Margarita and a Sangria Swirl... These came out to be about 6-7 bucks a pop for a 22oz drink. We didn't finish them, they were pretty good i would say. We also ordered the queso which was underwhelming unfortunately. I did like the different salsas that they brought out for the chips. Thought that was a cool addition, the sauces were like a habanero sauce, a pineapple almost mango'ish type sauce, and a fire roasted type sauce. For our main course we ordered the fajita plate that came with Shrimp, Pork Ribs, and Fajita steak. The steak fajitas and shrimp were decent, nothing to write home to momma about and the pork ribs were pretty good too i suppose. The charro beans that came with the fajita plate were not that good and the side of rice that came with the plate was also just mehhh. Overall i came into this place wanting to be wow'ed as its literally just a 5 minute drive from our home, but left feeling like for the price (about 50 bucks), there's a little bit better Tex-Mex food to be had elsewhere. However, i may be back if i ever am in need of some nice margaritas to wash away the sadness of work and traffic. read more

Falls in price range of Uncle Julio's Does not see kid friendly. Time will tell. Chips are light and fresh. Hot sauce or sweet sauce. Not sure what they want to push. The Papas con chili. I have been looking forward to Abuelo's opening up for months - and I am SO happy the time is finally here! My first visit did not disappoint. I love that they give you a sampler of salsas with their chips....really offers something for everyone. Food was amazing - I definitely recommend ordering the papas as a side (ordering mashed potatoes as a side at a Mexican joint sounds weird I know but TRUSSSSTTTT!!) Didn't have a margarita as I was there for lunch during the week but if they are anything like the Abuelo's in Lubbock, I know they are probably delicious. Yum! I really wanna come here to try their drinks but lunch was pretty good. I LOVE their salsa samplers, especially the pineapple one. There is a good variety for everyone to try something. I got the soup + salad. Salad was pretty good, but got super watery because they put queso on it, which also mitigates any health factor you are trying to get by ordering a salad ha. Competing in an overly-saturated Mexican restaurant market, Abuelo's in Katy, is totally worth your attention and visit. Upon entering, you immediately notice it's modern-chic decor that at the same time punches it's fiery personality with a vivid color pallette. Once seated, you're greeted with free chips and a sampler of salsas to try. I went ahead and ordered the "Grande Burrito" ($9.99) from the lunch menu and it was very satisfying. I would have loved if some sour cream, guacamole, lettuce and tomatoes were inside the burrito as it would have armonized with the tasty ground beef. Went with my wife. The food was good (although I seriously question if the sea bass was actually sea bass) but the service was LOUSY. The sad part was that bad servers were training new servers so it seems the bad service cycle is repeating itself. Despite the food being good we won't be back because the bad service and servers attitude pretty much canceled any thought of coming back. I am a recent transplant from Minnesota during this Covid challenge. My first 2 experiences we ordered food to go from the Katy restaurant. Large portions and very tasty. No disappointment in being take out food. The rice and beans are excellent! Vegetables were perfect. This previous Sat. I brought my brother here and we ordered appetizers as the portions are large. Again fantastic! Each time we have had something with shrimp in it and it has been the best shrimp ever! Fresh, flavorful, and not rubbery. The chips are light and crisp. The flour and corn tortillas are the best I have ever tasted anywhere. Be sure to order dessert, if you are too full, bring it home. We have had both the tres leche cake and cheesecake. We are not able to determine which we like best. They are both so good. I absolutely loved being inside the restaurant. Our server, Alex, was very good and explained items to us. Walking in, the restaurant looks beautiful. The booth we got seated at was very large and fancy. However, the food wasn't anything special. My family and I came to Abuelos for lunch this past Saturday and we were happy with our visit. First off, the booths for larger parties reminds me of a resort dining experiencing with the tall brown leather seating and sky light. The hostess forgot our booster so we just asked the server for one after she took our drink orders. I checked in with yelp and received a $5 off coupon yay yelp! I love that Abuelo's starts you off with chips and salsa. So many salsas so little time! I really liked the smokey chipotle. I ordered a Durango burrito which cam with shredded beef, rice and refried beans. The server told us the plates were very hot and to be careful, usually when I hear this I'm like pft yea it's fine I used to be a server. I went to reach for my knife and grazed the plate with my forearm, omg! It was definitely sitting under the heat lamp too long, I could tell because the refried beans were almost dried out on top as well. Nothing a little stir couldn't fix. The sauce was so creamy and the shredded meat was nice and tender. Our server was prompt refilled our waters often which made me happy with all the spicy salsas. Overall, I enjoyed my meal very much!
