However, my parents went yesterday for lunch and said there's a big sign on the door that says that they're permanently closed and they were hauling stuff out of there. Which I thought was kind of odd because we were just there three days ago and nobody said anything to us about them closing. TACO TUESDAY WAS IMMACULATE!!!! $6.99 ENCHILADA SPECIAL TUESDAY ALL DAY!!!! The moment I pulled up to the restaurant I was impressed with all the signage informing you of all of the new features and specials for the day. The host greeted me with a smile and escorted me to my seat. I was impressed with her asking if where she was seating me was to my liking. There was hardly anyone there around 2:45pm. My initial goal was to try the lunch specials but mind was changed when I saw the enchilada special. Immediately I was greeted by CHRIS my amazing server. He provided me with so many details of the menu to assist with making the best decision according to my taste buds. My first impression of him was greeting me before even grabbing my chips and dip because he did not want me to think he was passing me by at the table. You talk about EXCELLENCE AND ATTENTIVE IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. I was unsure about my drink selection as I am always mixing or concocting a combination. I requested STRAWBERRY TEA and CHRIS MADE IT HAPPEN. Next were the hot chips, and 3 dish combination salsa along with the mild picante sauce for chips. They were all delicious MILD, PINEAPPLE, AND HOT PEPPER. All of them were favorable. Then I decided on the ENCHILADA SPECIAL, with Mexican Rice and Charro Beans. It was hard making a decision but CHRIS told me every ingredient in the beans as if he cooked them and cut the seasoning. Then my food arrives and it was everything and then some. I had two beef enchiladas with red sauce and cheese on top. Once I bite into the first enchilada it was filled with meat and was SOOO tasty. I was going through the tea so quickly, CHRIS brought a decanter filled with tea so I would not be without something to drink. As I completed my food I was intrigued by the bartender CAMERON. He was very impressive with his knowledge of GINS, Bourbons, Vodkas and Whiskey. It felt like a class with a connoisseur. Then the evening was topped off when I seen the GENERAL MANAGER John greeting guest, serving food and servicing the entire restaurant. My phone died and he made sure it was charging while eating my meal and encouraged me to eat dessert. The customer service of every team member of this establishment is EXEMPLARY. We arrived just before 5pm and the restaurant was relatively empty. It took over 10 minutes for our waitress to arrive to bring us chips and another 5 minutes after that to get waters (that is all we ordered). Our waitress was somewhat attentive to us, but we would have to ask multiple times to get refills for water. She was prompt on bring out our food and queso, but was not attentive to refilling chips. The food was just okay. We ordered chicken nachos, and for the almost $19 price tag, I would have expected them to be more than just melted cheese on a chip with three small pieces of chicken each. No beans on them and the sides that come with it are not near enough for the amount of nachos. When I did get a side of refried beans, they tasted like they came straight out of a can. Been going to Abuelo's 2-3 times a year as it's sort of hard to get to. Kyle gave us excellent and very attentive service! Since Chuy's quit serving crunchy Chile Relleno's, I have been on a quest to replace them. (VERY stupid on their part!). Abuelo's Chile Relleno is not crunchy but still very good. Shredded beef in a large Poblano pepper, covered in egg wash and deep fried. Very tasty and close to a replacement. The Cheese enchilada was excellent. They offer Papas Fritas which are season fried mashed potatoes and are a sensational substitute for rice. They also offer a complementary triumvirate of salsas which are all superb and flavorful. Very clean and well appointed. Unlike Gringos, not at all noisy! With so many choices of Mexican in Katy, Abuelo's just rose a couple notches in our book. We will be back! read more

The food here was very good, some of the best I've had since moving to Texas. What keeps this from being 5 stars will be described below. 1) Pricey - Party of 5, $191 plus tip. We has 4 glasses of house wine which cost $43. (And they did not have Merlot.) I'm not a wine drinker, but everywhere has Merlot. I did say pricey. 2) Staff training - Our waiter was pleasant, and young. He brought us our bill without holder, just the paper ticket. After I gave him my card and it was returned in a holder. Someone must have enlightened him on the proper way to do things. Personally, this was not a problem for me. However, customers with less experience may walk to the front and try to pay (I remember my mistakes as a youth.) To his credit, I mention when he took our drink order that I drink a lot of water and he offered to leave a pitcher on the table. For me, that was very nice. Some place normally won't do that. 3) Layout - We were seated at a counter height table by the entrance. Had it been a busy night, all the traffic passing by would have been annoying. Also, I don't like counter height tables, but they did not have anything for a party of 5 at the regular tables. 4) Chips and salsa. I mentioned above that the food was very good, and this includes the chips and salsa. For 5 people, they brought out 3 baskets of chips and 3 bowls of salsa. Yet they went empty quickly. I recognize that I'm a barbarian that eats to much, but we ordered a guacamole and the salsa still went quickly with several people eating guac. I think the restaurant should have larger bowls of salsa and bigger baskets of chips. While speaking of salsa, they brought out a dish with 3 compartments, each with a different different salsa? The red one was spicy, the green one was not good to me, and the brown one was fine but different than the default salsa. Why? Did we have the option of getting these instead? If so, an explanation would be nice. Could we have had a bowl spicy salsa? Or that green stuff? So while this review might seem like a bitchfest, I did enjoy the food. The tacos and enchiladas were good. So was the rice and beans. My wife enjoyed her steak, but her tortilla soup was not very hot. Everyone was please with the meal overall. I never heard of this place so I was excited to give it a try. It was neat that there were three different kinds of salsas but it was difficult to dip into any of them as the serving dish was rather shallow. I also tried the bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer which were pretty good but you only get three to an order. So kinda pricey. Of course the only thing I took a picture of was my main dish, which was a beef quesadilla covered in cheese, served with what I will call mashed potatoes (They have a different name for it) and refried beans. It was $18. I was very pleased that there was cheese on everything. Lots of cheese. That's a win. However all the food was rather bland. I was also disappointed that the steak meat was cut into such small pieces that it just kind of fell out of the quesadilla when I tried to eat it. The service was solid and the ambience was nice. Once again, a 5 star experience. Abuelos is a hidden gem among the Mexican restaurants in Houston. The specials are always worth trying and the 60+ crowd gets lunch menus prices all day. The service and food was outstanding and the Manager stopped by to introduce himself & make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Not many managers care enough to do that. We got to try the new Sparkling Cabo Rita that hasn't even made the menu yet. Wow! A great summer drink. Abuelos in different parts of the country has always been one of our favorites. I intended to try a margarita, but it was a bit early in the day for me. So, I ordered vegetable enchiladas with half an avocado and black beans. I've ordered veggie enchiladas at quite a few places, and I'm usually disappointed. But not this time. Everything on my plate was good... really good. My husband ordered chicken enchiladas, and he was pleased, as well. Oh, and they give you several sauces to go with your chips. The sauces were ok. We went there for lunch and we're seated by a man who showed no expression nor greeted us with a smile He seemed annoyed and upset and really that is no way to greet your customers who fone to ypur place of business. I observed him while we were eating and he continued walking around the restaurant Like he was mad and irritated. I am very sure he was the General Manager John. But maybe he had a a problem or something but no way to act like that in front of your customers. Probably the worst experience I've had at a restaurant. The food was like Applebee's level but priced much higher. It was obviously microwaved. But plates average $20-$30 so I expected a little more. My beans and potatoes had the crust on it like it sat for awhile then got thrown in the microwave. It was awful. If I wanted microwaved leftovers I could have eaten at home for a lot less. There were art fixtures hanging up COVERED in dust. Drinks were mediocre. The WORST part. A couple sitting a couple tables away from us decided to change a crappy blow out diaper AT THE TABLE. The smell was horrific. Not one staff member asked them to go to the bathroom. They saw them. It was absolutely disgusting. I'm all about minding my business, but your convenience should not cost everyone else their meal. We politely paid and left. Needless to say, I'll never dine here again.
