Since the beginning of this year Academy Dental has been atrocious. I was hesitant to report them to the Board of Dentistry until they violated my father. Their errors include placing 2 temp crowns that immediately fell out, placing 2 permanent crowns DONE BY DR. JOEY KIM that fell out, and hastily trying to get me to have another one put in and pay out of pocket. They couldn't tell me why the 1st fell but promptly tried to get me to pay for another. I was placated by one (office) staff member that tried to minimize the severity of this issue physically, and honestly most importantly economically. This member of staff told me how RARE the crown coming out was. How I was in the small percentile, and it wouldn't happen again. When I went back to the patient suite and brought up the concerns of it happening again to Dr. Kim he had a different response. Dr. Kim said it can happen again and how I have little enamel. He mentioned the enamel thing before but didn't say ANYTHING about losing the crown. I'm panicking & pressing him to see what I can do so it won't occur again. I have needed a crown since 2018 & just this year my insurance overturned an approval for one. Not even the one that I've been requesting since '18. After pressing Dr. Kim ONLY then he mentions a procedure called "crown lengthening". In which its supposed to give me more gum space to attach the crown. If Dr. Kim knew about this procedure before AND knew I had little enamel. Why not mention it BEFORE placing the "permanent" crown in? Also, once he saw the 1st one didn't stay secured & knew I had little enamel. Why would he try to quickly slap another one in my mouth? Academy has no concerns with patient care at all. ABC (Always Be Closing) is their ethos & its only about monetary gains. The hurdles of a root canal, appealing denials, surgery, healing, its all getting done with a mouth full of pain for a yr. I complained about stuff that they could do things about. I mentioned suspecting a cavity more than once months apart. The last time I brought it up I was told by Dr. Yeojin Park, that the cavity wasn't "visible" on the surface so I should wait to see what comes of it. Another time I mentioned it to Dr. Park, I was also told that since she couldn't see anything she didn't want to "dig around searching" b/c that might make matters worse. The recommendations I received for an ENTIRE yr was to eat on one side. I was steadily in pain & their response was my mouth is overcompensating for chewing on one side. How once I get the crown then my teeth will stop hurting. After the 2nd temp crown came out with the quickness, I didn't even want to go to my next checkup. Then this past Tue. 11/21/23, the week of thanksgiving where we congregate, give thanks, celebrate and eat amongst a group of family. The crown DR. JOEY KIM installed on my father 2-3 mths ago came out. My crown was placed at the very back, so I was empathetic to perhaps how hard that area could be to reach and see. Now my father's tooth was in his front teeth. A tooth where the access can't get any better for viewing and reaching. Losing that perm tooth 2 days before thanksgiving left him with a lack of ability to eat & have pride in himself. After battling cancer recently and still in the throes of medical testing procedures, we can't even take one day for reprieve. To have seen my father, who is already currently in pain, dealing with a debilitating illness to be struck with that makes me absolutely indignant with rage. Dr. Kim gave me 2 prescriptions, but it was Dr. Park name that was on it despite not meeting her at that point. When I did the insurance appeals & received the rejection letters the provider's name was listed as Anna Gazu. Even on my patient chart Dr. Kim name isn't listed on the dates I had appts with him. The names Joyce Lau and Prachi Shah are listed as my providers for the appt. All these "providers" that names are being used on my documents I have never seen. Its not just the crown I wouldn't recommend them doing. I wouldn't trust this place with anything. read more
