They cancelled our kayak tour after we arrived. We paid the $20 ($4/hr) to park for the length kayak tour that they didn't reimburse. They cancelled for high wind and the listed wind was 12 mph and we did Cadillac earlier and is wasn't super windy there. If you are going to cancel at least do it several hours in advance. read more

Bottom Line: A rental shop in downtown Bar Harbor for mountain bikes and cross-over bikes. Kayak rentals too. My husband and I wanted to bike the Carriage Roads in Acadia National Park and we needed to rent bikes to do so. A week or so before arriving in Bar Harbor we reserved our bikes through Acadia Bike. We chose this shop because it was two short blocks from our hotel and a little less than two miles to the Carriage Roads. Everyone at the bike shop was wonderful and here's a special shout out to Mike. When we arrived we got fitted with comfy cross-over bikes and we were given a brief refresher on how to properly use brakes and gears. My husband is a road cyclist but I'm just a Peloton cyclist so I appreciated the reminders. We used the bikes to ride about 20 miles of the crushed gravel, rolling Carriage Roads and the cross-overs, inclusive of comfy seats, were just what we needed. We stopped for lunch at the Jordan Pond House and when it was time to saddle up, we realized that we had a flat tire. We called the bike shop and they had a replacement bike to us in about 15 to 20 minutes. We weren't bothered by the flat - we know flats happen and aren't in the bike shop's direct control and it gave us some extra time to let our lunch digest. Plus, we also got a second round of excellent service from Mike. Acadia Bike also advertises being a bike shop. I'm not clear what they offer as far as a "shop" goes - I am guessing they work on bikes and sell some select gear. I know my husband was proud to leave with a new cycling jersey. This same shop also does kayak rentals and guided kayak tours under the name Coastal Kayaking Tours. As far as biking to the Carriage Roads, there is a decent hill to climb in town on the West Street Extension before you get to the crushed gravel path with Acadia National Park. Another Yelper implied that if you can't do that hill you probably will struggle with a day of riding the Carriage Roads. That sounds a bit harsh but it definitely has some truth to it. The Carriage Roads are effectively rolling hills and there are some really long inclines. (And I understand why so many people opt for an e-bike.) Perhaps there are some flatter sections to the Carriage Roads but I didn't find them. Rockefeller, Jr. planned and graded the roads to be horse friendly and scenic. I can't speak for the horses but the scenery was definitely amazing! We took a very leisurely 3.5 hours to get to the Jordan Pond House from the bike shop and made many stops along the way. On the return, we hauled-ass and got back in about 56 minutes with a head wind. Yeah, I think we even passed some people on e-bikes. read more

The bike rental was great, and it was a lot of fun on the bike trail to explore acadia.

I had shared with the owner that we would be riding the bikes as part of an organized tour lasting 3 days and proceeding from Inn to Inn where we would need to carry gear with us. We understood that we would be riding hybrid bikes and not road bikes, but we expected bikes of touring quality. Here are the issues that we experienced: 1) When shifting into the smallest gear, the bike for one of our riders would shift the chain off the ring, necessitating frequent stops (at least 5 or 6 times) to reset the chain. This occurred during the climb up Cadillac Mountain which added an element of danger (steady stream of cars going by) to the inconvenience of lost momentum and greasy hands. 2) Another rider rode most of the first day with a bottom bracket making a great deal of noise and adding resistance to the pedaling. These first two issues were addressed by swapping out for different bikes. This was only possible because our first day was a loop back to Bar Harbor. 3) My bike started out shifting well, but by the time we climbed Cadillac Mountain on the first day, the bike was already beginning to slip back out of the lower gear to the higher gear I had just shifted out of. On the second day, while traveling on Hwy 102 to Southwest Harbor, my bike consistently fell back out of the lower gear, also a dangerous situation as we were on narrow shouldered roads with imposing gravel dump trucks right next to us. Fortunately, I am an experienced cyclist and either kept my balance and powered ahead or put my foot down until traffic was less and I could correct the shifting. By the last day, I would shift to a lower gear and hold the shifter in that position for a minute to keep it in the lower gear. 4) The racks were attached to the seat post and only suited to lightweight loads. Most of us could not use the bags we had planned, either wearing a backpack for the trip or using plastic shopping bags lashed on to the racks provided. I had let the owner know that we were carrying overnight supplies on the bikes. The racks on the bikes that others on our tour rented from a different bike shop in town had supports going down to the axle of the back wheel. These are the type of racks one would expect for carrying overnight loads. The bungee cords had almost no stretch/give to them, causing the shopping bag solution to fall off the bike. The problem was solved when we found decent bungee cords lying on the side of the road. 5) When we picked up the bikes, the bolt that held the rack on was so long that it rubbed against the riders' inner thigh. The attitude of the person outfitting us to start seemed slightly cavalier: "There's nothing we can do about that." Even duct tape wrapped around the rough edge would have helped. Ideally, the bolts could be cut/ground down a bit as it seems that they don't need to be that long. One of the members of our group provided feedback as we returned the bikes that they fell short of our touring needs. The response was to the effect that we could see what we were getting on the web site. Sigh. The owner reached out to me to tell me why our expectations were wrong and after I provided him with all of the detail above, did not respond further, so I am writing this review to let people know that if you are interested in renting a bike for touring, Acadia Bikes is not the place for you. read more

I did a half-day kayaking tour. Our tour guide, Laura, so very nice! She made sure we were prepared before leaving and throughout the whole trip, she ensured our small group was safe and comfortable. Our tour started on the sand bar where we went around Bar Island, Sheep Porcupine, and Burnt Porcupine Island. The first half of the kayaking tour was very leisurely because the water was calm and Laura gave us a lot of facts about the environment being able to identify and answer any questions. We took a halfway break on Burnt Porcupine Island where we were able to explore on our own. I found some sea glass that I was able to take home which was a great souvenir! The second half was a bit rough, quite literally. On the other side of the islands, it water was more rough. The temperature was about 60 degrees (and sunny) that day and with the water hitting my hands, they did get a bit cold and tighten up a bit. The waves were a bit intense so I couldn't imagine it on a cloudy, rougher day. We did see a bald eagle on Sheep Porcupine which was awesome! Overall, it was a great experience but I don't think it's something I would do more than once. Thank you Laura for being such an amazing tour guide! Some tips: be prepared to get your feet wet in order to get into the kayak, bring water & snacks, WEAR SUNSCREEN (my face and scalp got pretty burnt) and go to the bathroom whenever you can (before and on the island) because it's quiet uncomfortable while kayaking. read more

A few bikes from Acadia Ebike Adventures, a sandwich and water; all you need for the PERFECT way to explore Acadia National Park, breathe the sea air, get great exercise and enjoy the wildlife. The wide hard gravel carriage roads that crisscross this seaside park run up and down in elevation and provide a stable platform. The Electric Bike Company Class 1 cruiser bikes did well on the gravel roads taking us through forests of birch, cedar, oak, pine and fir. We heard an eagle screech! The bikes are equipped with insulated bags front and rear, a computer display that tracks your miles, speed, battery life. The bikes are "class 1," which means you must pedal about one crank before the electric motor kicks in, giving you five levels of power to shoot up the hill. We rode 25 miles during our six-hour rental, and still had 50 percent charge in the battery at the end of the day. The seats are wide and cushy with an under-seat shock absorber that really help smooth the gravel roads. Tom and Robin made the experience enjoyable and easy; we got emails a few days before our date with meet-up details, a list of personal items to bring, and how to get a national park pass. We met just inside the park gate, got custom-fitted to the bikes, briefed on the bike operation, and provided with maps and route recommendations. I'll remember this experience for the rest of my years. Thanks to the crew at Acadia Bike & Canoe for making the bike rental process affordable, approachable. My husband is a bike engineer but I'm what you call a cruiser bike rider - who dabbles in indoor cycling. So, I had the idea of biking the carriage roads with a hint of intimidation in my voice. For around $25 for the day (each), we were able to rent hybrid bikes and helmets for the 20 mile loop trip through the carriage roads of Acadia National Park. If you're considering this, I highly recommend popping by this business. Note that all bikes have to be returned by 5pm. They are located near the main attractions of Bar Harbor. You'll also find free street parking nearby to leave your car. The staff was very friendly and they have a bathroom on-site. Note that they also offer tandem bikes, kid carts, etc. read more

We were so excited about renting the bikes to ride carriage road. I have two smaller kids so before renting we called to make sure the bus could take us up to carriage road so we wouldn't have to ride the busy downtown roads with two small children. They ensured us that we could be taken by bus so we could skip putting our kids in danger since carriage road is a car free road we thought that was perfect and went ahead and booked. Upon arrive I called again to make sure the bus could take us, they said yes. We went to Acadia bike to pick up our bikes, got fitted for the right bikes and when we asked for transportation they told us they couldn't haul my kids tag along bike and that we would have to ride the main road. We made it down one street and turned back around because it was just too dangerous for my kids to be on a road that busy. We went back to the shop literally 5 mins later and we explained to the staff that the ride wasn't safe and we would like to exchange for a different adventure. They called the owner out to speak with us and he was by far the rudest man I've ever encountered. When I tried to explain the situation to him he put his hand up and told me to be quiet. We didn't want a refund just wanted to change to a less dangerous adventure. We even offered to pay whatever it cost for the time it took to fit us for the bikes. He was a little man with a big ego and terrible customer service. We lost $137. I understand he had a business to run and they have a short window to make money in bar harbor but in my experience customer service goes a long way. We travel a lot and always give suggestions to other travelers. I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone renting from this business. read more

Let me start by saying my wife wanted me to do this. I was against the idea of kayaking in the ocean for my first time. Our Guide Cam was amazing. She kept the entire group engaged even tho we were always last in line. i was exhausted and soar because of a previous back injury. She showed me some tricks to rowing and seating to relieve pressure she even offered to tow me back..... as much as i wanted too i didnt not take her up on it. We rented 2 bikes. Had reservations and no issues with picking them up. Staff was attentive and friendly. As we were about to leave 2 people came back to return their bikes and they commented on how the bikes weren't that great. Well once we got going we felt the same. I struggled shifting gears the entire time, my boyfriend didn't care for his bike too much either. We biked from the shop to the carriage roads which was under 2 miles and then the carriage roads were awesome...I highly recommend. I chose Acadia Bike & Canoe over Coastal Kayaking Tours. Since it was just my two younger brothers (13 & 9) and I, they told me they couldn't accommodate us because I'd need another adult to paddle with one of my brothers. I called Acadia Bike & Canoe and explained my situation and they assured me it was no problem, that we could make reservations and one of the kids could paddle along with a guide. When we got there, we were attended to personally and quickly. We were quickly fitted with life jackets and explained the rules. Our guide was terrific. She explained to us the history of Bar Harbor as well as the conservation efforts throughout the island to preserve its natural beauty. We started at the sand bar and ended near there, although when we got back you couldn't see the sand bar anymore due to the tide. If you have kids, it might be a little scary for them because you do go in the ocean, but that's what makes it fun. With encouragement and trust, they'll have a blast. Some of the best customer service I've ever had. Next time I vacation there, I'll be coming back here. read more

We rented bikes for 4 hours for $30 each. Fom the shop you can bike to Acadia park (2 miles). We spent the whole time biking in the park. Lots of slight ups & downs so be ready to pedal!! There is one cafe/snack shop at the park- at Jordan pond. So you may want to bring your own snacks just in case you don't make it over there. Four of us reserved e-bikes to cycle the beautiful Carriage Trails of Acadia. It was a nice way to get to see more of the park during the fall colors time of the year. Highly recommend reservations during times where there are a lot of visitors to the park. It was such a joy to be able to get up the trails, some of which had fairly steep grades, with ease. The bikes were very good quality and well maintained. The owners were courteous, helpful and pleasant. They suggested routes to take and provided a map. Highly recommend this outfit! read more

A must-do if you're in Bar Harbor while visiting Acadia (not sure who would ever be in the area without combining the two, though). Rent bikes for $27 ish each and either ride them up the hill into the park or catch the shuttle. But really, just ride them up the hill. If you don't have the strength to get up that hill (at your own pace), it's probably not safe for you to be out riding on the carriage roads all day. Anywho, get the rental bikes, pack water, stop and get popovers at Jordan Pond house, and finish riding the loops. Boom. Day made. Simple as that. We also did a four hour kayaking tour with Laura. Also worth the $ but you better use sunscreen and be prepared to pee on whatever island you stop at (should you need to go). read more

Friendly, well run bike rental! We rented for an August afternoon in Acadia, a last minute decision. Fortunately, they had bikes available, and we were fitted and on our way quickly into the park for a 13.5-mile loop around Eagle Lake. Easy peasy. Bikes are in excellent condition, and the map provided for trails and to park entry was clear and useful. I recommend highly. General tips for Acadia cyclists: (1) There's only one food concession in the park, at Jordan Pond House. You'll be smart to pack your own snacks. (2) The carriage trails in Acadia may NOT be used by e-bikes that are Class 2 or 3. If considering an e-bike, check the park rules first. Fellas... I tip my hat to you. I don't know how on earth you manage to bike ride with balls. Because I'm telling you, after four hours of trail rides this afternoon, MY balls hurt, and I don't even have any! And folks, this is using the "comfort" bike offered at Acadia Bike. Unless you're particularly rugged... or have super-padded bike shorts, I definitely recommend choosing the comfort bike over the mountain bike. Of course, the selection is quite used... the tread on my tires was getting fairly bald, and there are some squeaks here and there. They choose the size of the bike based on your height -- so consider giving it a quick spin down the road to be sure it's working out for you before departing. Reasonable all-day rates ($22), helmets included, with the damage waiver being only a buck more. From there, just head around the block to catch the convenient city-run shuttle that runs every 15 minutes; picks you up and takes you to Acadia (and will pick you up from there, when you're finished. Operates until 5pm). This is really convenient if you're not sure about biking your way out to the park (though it can be done, and Acadia Bike's provides a map to show you how to avoid Route 3). They also gave us a useful map of the carriage trails at Acadia, and highlighted the main (easiest) recommendation. We did that loop, and added in a few other carriage trails on our ride. The map :really: helped, since the signage along the way is befuddling. Recommended for your riding needs! read more

Awesome rental bikes! So pleased with this place! Really good prices - $22 per bike for the whole day without a reservation. The bikes are NICE. Like, everybody out on the trails kept saying, "Where'd you get those nice bikes?" Get the mountain bikes, not the "comfort" bikes. I think the "comfort bikes" are designed for parents who are gonna be biking around the lake slowly following their kids. They start off comfortable, but the they start to suck. You definitely want the mountain bike if you're going to be biking for more than an hour. I literally NEVER bike, and I managed to knock our 24 miles of biking without TOO much pain. There's a shuttle that takes you to the carriage roads right from the rental place, so we chose to park in Bar Harbor and use the shuttle, which was super convenient. It's also a pretty easy bike ride from the trails back to Bar Harbor. There are maps in the shuttle, and the shuttle driver was very helpful in making recommendations about the trails. If you want to avoid the crowds and see some good elevation, take the roads away from the main loops. We went around Eagle Lake as a warm-up, but then we went over to Aunt Betty's pond and took the loop "Around the Mountain".... it was NOT easy, but the pay-off was great and there was barely anybody else up there. This was during peak tourist season, middle of August! The loop around Jordan Pond is going to be more crowded, but it still wasn't too bad. And the icing on the cake: we were pretty quick in getting the bikes back, so we ended up only using them for half of the day (which was fine with us, we only paid $22 each) and they actually refunded us the difference! VOLUNTARILY! We brought the bikes back and they were like, "ok hold on, we're just going to give you back some money." When does THAT happen?! Great experience, would love to do it again. They also have a sister company which does sea kayak tours, and based on the experience we had with the bikes, I think we will have to try their kayaks next time we're here! read more

Nice operation. First, my innkeeper advised me when I made my reservation not to bring my bike if I was going to ride the carriage roads in Acadia National Park because there is a lot of gravel on the roads. It is true that there is gravel, and if you have a road bike with very slender tires this might be a consideration, but honestly there isn't much gravel and my bike would have been fine. Also to think about is whether you want to go to the hassle of bringing your bike and keeping it somewhere. If there is a group of you, renting bikes will add up. If you arrived by cruise ship then I guess it's safe to say that you didn't bring a bike and need to rent one. I rented a decent bike for $22 and a bike rack for my car for $12. They gave me the helmet and didn't charge me. They also gave me a bike lock. Also got some decent maps and suggestions. I biked about 22+ miles of carriage roads. Parked at Jordon Pond House and went from there (lots of parking behind the restaurant). The carriage roads are nice to see and generally not very steep. There are some carriage roads that are closed to bikes. These are marked. There is temporary parking in front of the shop, so you can pull up and get a bike and then drive off, but you sort of need to be quick about it. If you don't have a car, then you can bike to the carriage roads from the bike shop. They will show you how. It's about two miles, I believe. You need to be back by six pm or they will charge you for an extra day. Acadia Bike is open later than other bike rentals. read more

Initially we went to their location on corner of Holland and Cottage to rent two bikes. Even though there were bikes everywhere, we were told they didn't have any bikes to rent and we needed to walk down to their larger store a couple blocks away. While I didn't mind walking the couple blocks, a little explanation as to why we couldn't rent any of the bikes there (ie: these just came back and need to be re-checked, or these all have been reserved) would have been nice, it was a little strange. When we did get to the shop where we could rent bikes it was very busy, but they did have a good amount of employees trying to speed along the process. In the end I don't think we got the most knowledgeable employee, after telling us the bikes needed to be back by 5:00 she asked us at (1:30) if we wanted to pay for a full day or half... well I certainly don't want to pay for a full day if I can only have a half! Anyway, she just wasn't overwhelmingly helpful with information, we had to ask a lot of questions. When we paid we went out to get our bikes and again they were busy and we had to wait a bit, but they were making an effort to help people efficiently. We got our bikes and hit the road, didn't have any problems with the bikes while we were out, and return was simple. Tip: There is a HUGE and LONG uphill if you are riding from the shop to the trails in Acadia. If you aren't up for the hill, considering taking the Island Explorer to the park. Going back down the hill was fun though! read more

The brochure specifically states that they will measure you for your bike, but that didn't happen at all. They just brought out whatever bikes they had not bothering to have us try them out for size. I guess it was our fault for not insisting we ride them a bit at first but it was pretty busy so it would have been difficult. It the ride was short it might not have been a big deal but riding a bike that was too big made the 10+ miles challenging. Also I was quite surprised they weren't more forthcoming with the difficulty of the ride. It was more than half uphill. We were reasonably fit and it was still tough. I worry about an older couple or someone not very fit may get out there and have a heart attack. They might be in for a serious lawsuit for not disclosing how tough of a ride it really is.
