I have shopped here off and on for years. Sometimes the service is scattershot, sometimes too pushy. But I overlooked this, as the merchandise was usually decent. However, after my visit today, I will no longer be patronizing this business. After trying on several items, I wanted to purchase a dress. However, said item had hairs on it, to a noticeable degree (the customer checking out next to me agreed). Besides being obviously unhygienic, I was worried about allergies, as I am alergic to cats and wondered if somebody with an animal had tried it on previously. When I got up to the front and asked for an additional 10% off for this (as I would need to have it cleaned before wearing), the owner played the nut role and made me repeat my request by saying, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" When I reiterated my request, she silently rang me up and presented my $124 worth of merchandise without so much as a thank you or a smile. Obviously, in a snit. I chewed on this, went to the bathroom and then calmly said to her that I was a regular customer, had been for years, and I wondered (since during my previous visits, I have never gotten the full service that the older white customers seem to get, as I can hear them being helped and conversed with while I am not checked on) whether she would be acting like she was doing me a favor by selling to me if I wasn't black. Just as a "shot in the dark", so to speak, since she was so short-tempered and rude to me. And she said, "Let's not go there." Which is not an apology. Or even a proper rebuttal, I might add. Now, in my experience, as a 50-year-old black woman working and living in virtually all white spaces my entire life, when people say something like that to you, in a dismissive, hostile tone, that you have struck a nerve. Especially when you are not even given the benefit of eye contact. Which is to say, I was right. They have many a good sale here as of late, no doubt due to the state of the economy and the lack of interest in brick and mortar stores. My hope, however is that when you patrons out there DO go to a retail space in person, you choose one that treats ALL customers with the respect, kindness and humanity no doubt EVERYONE deserves. Which certainly can't be found at Accents Plus. Who should settle for anything less? read more

On the corner of Davis and Chicago Ave it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and I decided to drop in to browse around. I have seen this boutique many times but usually in the evening so it closes by the time I get there. It's a nice sized boutique and she had this afternoon many women shopping who knew each other and it sounded like the frequent this place often. The gentleman sitting at the front of the store was very patient and observing and likely his partner was trying on many items. The crowd was primarily mature women and I count myself in this generation but didn't find the clothes to my liking. The tops were comfortable wide and free flowing with many colors and patterns to choose from. There was one pair of slacks that were more fitted but the majority is loosely fitted. That may be the style at this time but I am prefer high rise slim skinny jeans and a more fitted look typically. She has a beautiful selection of jewelry and other accessories like scarves. She allowed me to browse as the others were checking on their sizes and using the fitting rooms. She was quite busy. read more

Accents Plus is my absolute favorite shop in downtown Evanston! It's a cute boutique where you can find high quality, one of a kind clothing and accessories. It can be pricey, yet it's my go to place when I need something special, or feel like treating myself. My favorite aspect of this shop is the jewelry. Again, unique one of a kind pieces. Some high end, but also every price point. A lot of my jewelry is from here, and many pieces are items that I've had for years. Lots of sterling silver, which I love, and beautiful designs. Whenever I'm in Evanston I buy clothes here. I walked in today and was completely ignored, like I was invisible. Not a hello or did anyone even look up. I ended up buying over $300. For two items cause I liked their clothes. But really , there was only one person in the shop who was chatting with the staff and they couldn't look up. Not nice. read more

First spied the dress on a mannequin in the window, while waiting for the light to change. Sleeveless black and taupe knit top with layers of black and taupe tulle falling to the knee. Unusual. Wintry. Had the shoes already. It flitted around in my brain for a few weeks. I didn't make a move. Then I saw it at Anthropologie and touched it, and looked at the price tag. Special occasion price point. I still delayed, feeling it was frivolous. Finally deciding that frivolity has a place in one's life and in one's wardrobe, I passed through the doors and covered three lengths of the store before finding it - the last one left. It was not my size. I tried it on anyway. I half-listened to the nice clerk's advice that it could be worn with a sheer top underneath or a sheer wrap over, to camouflage the too-large arm holes. It was a go. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that it cost $10 less than at Anthropologie. Keeping it local and saving some scratch: win/win. Next time I will skip the hand-wringing and strike while the iron is hot and still available in my size. Overall, very good. read more

The owner is incredibly rude and dishonest. They have the worts filing system and lost twice my store credit. The employee looks for it and tells you that it must be in another folder and that they will call you later. I am still waiting. Last year, I returned some defective pants, I was told very rudely by the owner that I must have washed them the wrong way , that it must be my fault....After much rolling eyes on her part, I was told that I could a credit since they didn't have another pair. The credit has disappeared! For a local business, it's a shame!!! read more

This is the only shop where I buy very high quality, one of a kind fashion pieces. These clothes will last you a lifetime if you take good care of them, and they will never be out of fashion. I've seen on other reviews that this is considered to be a "mature" women's clothing shop, and I was surprised because I love the styles there and I'm 23! Last time I shopped there, the sales clerk surprised me by picking out a sleek black dress that I wouldn't have chosen for myself (too revealing!), but it ended up looking great on me and complimented everything I like about my figure while hiding everything I don't. The service is very polite, knowledgeable, and discreet at this store if you need a hand picking classics for your closet or help in the fitting room. I came in right before they closed once, and they were gracious enough to keep the store open for another half hour for me. Now that's service. The clothes have high price tags, but they often have sales every season. The jewelry is very reasonably priced if you want to treat yourself to something without breaking the piggy bank. I have my eye on a pair of $15 earrings. Overall, the perfect store to get staples you will cherish forever. read more

The clothes are really cool. Shopping experience uncomfortable. The staff is friendly, but the person helping me was way too eager to please. She would give me no time to try on things before bringing more and more and more and trying to sell me constantly. I don't like that. Some do. I'm sure she was trying to please. The dressing rooms have the kind of lighting that shows every flaw and ripple of fat on the body. This sounds ridiculous, but it was the reason I rushed out after trying on only a few things! Dressing rooms should make you look your BEST which encourages purchases. It also feels claustrophobic in dressing room. A huge chair is in the way, and the cloth across the door doesn't offer full privacy. I'm a person who doesn't really like to shop or these things likely wouldn't bug me! But because of this, I'll go to J.Jill instead. I really want to shop locally! If I want to go back, I guess I need to learn to say 'please leave me alone' in a polite way, without feeling badly. But also, staff might be better tuned in to who wants to be left alone and who enjoys being hovered over. Thanks. read more

I really like this store! I'm choosey about where I shop, especially when, as here, you can return only for store credit. But Accents Plus has proven themselves. Although they have the stylish, somewhat edgy pieces I seek in a boutique, the clothes have staying power and I find myself wearing them for seasons. In fact, I just saw a picture of myself in an Accents Plus outfit from 2006 and thought, "Hey, I'm gonna dig into my closet and wear that number soon. Forgot how pretty it is! " I like the sales staff. They always take their time with you and provide many suggestions.In addition, Accents is a corner shop with lots of space and sunlight. This is an example of a local business that I'm happy has stuck around for 20 years! The owner knows how to buy for her client. They do have an outdated system but it is obviously working because she has been doing it for very long. They have expensive and inexpensive which I appreciate when I want something to last me a long time. I have been a very good customer shopping here for years, and have always found the owner somewhat rude. Money is tight these days and there are other boutiques I could go to in the city. As I drive in from the city to shop there. I had an awful experience with the manager. She has been difficult to deal with in the past, but today really upset me and ruined my day off! I accidentally left the house with the wrong credit card and was not able to use the card I was carrying. I honestly have never been in this situation before. I have great credit and it was not like I haven't spent a bundle there in the past. The manager humiliated me and made me feel like I made the sales associate stay longer, and she made the comment that she had an hour drive home! I have been in sales all my life and I would never treat a customer that way, not sure I want to go back for my items, let along ever shop there again! .....bad vibes and bad Karma!!! Yes, high end, but they also have tons of silver jewelry and some other accessories that are very reasonably priced. Plus, twice a year they put most of their merchandise on sale for half off, believe it or not. This store is an Evanston institution and one of the few places where women of substance (that is, those who weigh enough not to be overly worried about osteoporosis) can shop for beautiful things. I only wish they had a few more items in the larger sizes, such as XL and beyond. read more

Even though I can't afford to shop there on the reg, every so often there'll be something I can't resist. I'm 22 and love this place, but I would say it's probably geared moreso towards a more mature woman - price and style. Just had a horrible experience there. Their clothes can be a bit pricey, but I've picked up a few essential wardrobe pieces that are worth a little extra. Their accessories -- scarves, purses, jewelry -- are really cute and reasonable. Here's my problem: they have terrible customer service. I purchased a small, cross-body style purse last June. I only wore it on occasion when I was traveling light -- pretty much wallet and cell phone. One day after a few weeks, it just broke while I was walking along. The metal ring connecting the strap to the bag broke. I brought it back, and a lovely saleswoman apologized and immediately offered me a choice of a refund or replacement. I liked the bag and thought it was just a fluke that it broke, so I took another. Last night, that one did the exact same thing. Today when I went in, I got one of the owners. She didn't apologize, asked me if I loaded it down, and told me without the receipt she had no way of giving me any kind of refund or credit! There was another one there and it was the exact same price, and since I wouldn't accept her first answer, she instructed a salesperson to take care of me and give me a store credit. Then she walked away... no apology, nothing. Again this salesperson was lovely, and did apologize to me. Last year, I bought every single Christmas present for every female relative at that store -- and I have 9 female relatives. And for every gift bought them, I threw a little something in for myself. This year... I'm going somewhere else. Sorry Accents Plus... you're not that awesome of a store. read more
