First impressions: Quiet (which I liked) and Popular to Africans so it must be good! This restaurant caught my eye when I was on my way to an event, the day before, i a Lyft. I mentioned it to my loved ones that we had to try it out. And we went the day the next day! I love the marquee on the front. It's very eye-catching and welcoming. When I entered the restaurant, there was a medium sized line of people around in the afternoon on a Sunday. Be mindful of people who may want to cut the line lol. When it was my turn to be served, I noticed that there weren't any signs on the food, paper menus or screen menus so I had to go based off of my sister's knowledge of food we have eaten at our Ghanaian friends' houses or events that we have attended that served the foods that were presented. The servers were friendly to me when I asked what each of the food items were which i wad grateful for. I noticed from observing other people when they were ordering that you can ask to them to avoid some of the meat when getting the stews. I believe everything, but the fish has multiple meats in it. If you only want chicken to be served in your stew they just pick out all of the pork or turkey pieces if you want all the meat but chicken they will pick those out. I loved how generous the helpings were however, when taking it to go, my bag overflowed, and I lost a good portion of my okra stew when I arrived at home. It would have be nice if there were signs explaining what each item was, the pricing. Even having a menu that explains what each item is in the Ghanaian language of choice and English so that people can read through when they're waiting online. I noticed that there are TVs in the background that can possibly display the menu items. I am curious to try the drinks that they have that are from Ghana. I will order one that I haven't tried before next time. My sister and I both got the okra stew with plantain Fufu which smelled amazing and tasted delicious. I ordered Shitto to go with my meal and to have over throughout the week with my meals. It's also known as pepper sauce that has bits of fish in it similar to the chili sauce is that Asian communities use but better. I really liked the turkey and chicken pieces in my soup. I wasn't a fan of the pork, so I'll be mindful to ask for the specific meat options next time I order. In regards to ambience, I would say it's casual canteen style restaurant that is laid-back and had a traditional feel. I feel like everyone comes for the quality of the food as opposed to the aesthetic of the restaurant. I'm glad they had a sit down place for people who may be traveling from afar it would be nice to see more of the country's culture in the interior design, decor and music lightly playing in the background. Went to visit my brother last month and he got a bunch of goodness from this African restaurant. The staff was friendly and answered all my questions. I believe that they have another spot in Harlem. We got some good fish and some soup. Both hit the spot with some of that good food that sticks to your soul. I added some chili oil he had at home to the soup and damn, made me feel great. Great restaurant and such a warm welcome from the staff and owner who let us try samples of their different stews/soups and rice. Make sure you let them know about any allergies. The plantains were outstanding, sp was the waakye (rice and beans). A little spicy but delicious. Great for takeout, or casual dine in with friends. Very affordable and flavorful. Don't be intimating if you don't know what something is, you can just ask or try it! What made it extra was definitely how friendly and nice the owner was. Great food and super polite employees. Food is really tasty, and restaurant is always busy. Owners know what they are doing.

I have a more western palate so my favorite dishes are biased in that sense. The jollof rice was excellent and the addition of meat with what I believe is pepper sauce is the perfect topping. We got the spinach stew and beans in one plate together and that combination makes perfect sense to my taste buds. The egusi and okra stews were both tasty, just two foods I am not as accustomed to eating. I also prefer the more neutral flavor of fufu compared to pounded yam. Overall I'd come back and order again. The food travelled well but they also have a sit down area. It was a little busy when I came but the service was good and the worker helped me through my gaps in knowledge when it came to the right pairings for things. read more

The food is A+! All the soups and stews are very tasty and homemade. Ask the prices first is all I will say. There is no menu board so you have to ask to know the price of the food you want. The price is totally reasonable for the amount of food they give. With the rice dishes, I have always left with enough food for 3 servings and that's just with a small. The large easily can feed 4. It's rice, meat, and a scoop of soup if you will like and different toppings. The toppings are onions, garri, spaghetti, pepper sauce. The Flavor is Amazing! The joloff rice and waakye is really good. The rice grain is whats different than I was used to growing up as a child. They use enriched long grained rice and I am used to parboiled long grained rice. The soups like Egusi, Palmnut, Light soup, Okra, Spinach are all GOOD! They have the right spices and are definitely made the right way. There is always a line and they move slow. It's like 2 women who serve the food and take the money. However when you get called next they are alright but not the nicest. I understand because it's only those two people serving the foods and with customers ordering the food in different names because they serve alot of different West African foods and they are older women. It's a grab and go situation as the seating area is being used to store supplies due to Covid. Check out Accra. I will always love the food but the lady in here working right now tried it! I don't know if it's because it's this stormy rainy weather tonight but ummmm......... Now I use to live down the block before I moved back to Brooklyn so this was my everyday fix working overnight food was everything ! I always get the joloff rice and meat stew with 2 eggs. My meal was always $8-9 depending on who serve it was either or price. Didn't care I really like this restaurant. I was the first person to really give this place clout on social media as a first time customer. Today a lady working charged me $14 for a small order.... $14 y'all where the hell that price jump came from ??!!!!! She said because I got 2 eggs... My friend got okra stew and goat meat. There are about 3 tables and 4 chairs at each table so very little seating. I have been going here since 2009, it is not far from my school, so when I am tied of eating Spanish or Chinese foods I eat here. this is the first and ONLY resteraunt that I have been to that has NO PRICES LISTED. SO, you PAY what ever they tell you the food COST. I recall two different events were their employee tried to make me pay $12.00 for the same plate I always paid $10.00 for. when I informed her I always pay $10.00. she said with a surprised look and a slight grin ... "okay, okay $10.00" furthermore, the first couple of years, I was ignored by the staff... a women who the owner's son calls auntie, ignored me standing on the line. she would just take customer's behind me, when I said excuse me, I was next., she would roll her eyes , then started speaking in her native speech) the food is very oily, and at times salty, and the food is stored on a steam tables. I use to only tip my server their if I ate inside( their restaurant is very very loud restaurant because they blast African music and have the TV at the same time on, so forget about trying to hold a conversation). Once, I realized the man who was being served in front of me tipping "auntie" a $1.00 or maybe it was $2.00 for his takeout and she gave him a lot of food... So one day I tipped "auntie" for my takeout plate, and after that "auntie" become attentive to me, and once greeted me with a"hello".Smh. it's funny how tipping for takeout gets u recognized and /or slightly more food. A Ghanaian friend brought me and some friends here, we were a group of 5. This place is no fuss - simply choose from the dishes they have at the counter, pair with either rice or fufu and that's it. We ordered so much to try. Here's what I have to say: - Ghanaian spicy is spicy! I am going to start by saying that I am not of African descent therefore, I am providing this review with a lack of knowledge as to what African cuisine is suppose to taste like. I will say that the food was amazing to me. My daughter liked it as well. I decided to stop by because it's on the way home from my daughters' school. She seemed intrigued to try it because she always ran into the store or any patrons leaving the store. So why not right ? Inside the restaurant is pretty decent. There's enough sitting space and you have the take out, dine in or delivery options which I love. I was taken back by patrons living the cutlery and dine ware on the table. Apparently, you're suppose to do that. My only quarrel would be that there isn't a clear understanding of what's in the dishes. They have the signs but many of the words are in another language I believe. SOME dishes are translated but you still don't know what's in them and there's no actual price. I saw two prices and that's it; unless everything is the same price. The line is also extremely long most times and waiting with a child can be challenging. But the food was amazing. read more

When reviewing restaurants of cuisines that are beyond the 'mainstream diet' of residents of even our country's most cosmopolitan of cities, it can be easy to let the establishment serve as a proxy for the culinary merit of the country as a whole. That's problematic, because a restaurant serving the traditional, or even modern takes on a particular regions, shouldn't be held to account for the entire agricultural and societal development that has evolved over hundreds or even thousands of years. That's why I'm happy to have trekked up to the South Bronx recently with ten friends to try not one but three different Ghanaian restaurants. This wasn't my first time with the cuisine, I'd had it three times before, and certainly some of the elements that were present are available in other West African and Caribbean traditions. But for everyone else, this was their first exposure to the food of Ghana. By the time we arrived at Accra, multiple members of the food tour were pulling me aside to let me know that we "shouldn't order too much food here." The fried fare of Papaye, along with the BYOB Guinness had tired the crew out. I sent everyone back to the dining room, with its black lights and tropical hand painted murals, while I waited in a very line at the buffet/steam table. The black-eyed pie fritters were a big draw - they are apparently called akla or koosé - in Ghana. They were not very heavy, but had a great hearty flavor. We also got a plate of noodles, which didn't have much flavor either way. As a capper to the entire day of Ghanaian food, we got a desert of couscous pudding, which contained balls of tapioca and in a thin dairy broth. This wasn't sweet and was possibly the single best thing we had all day. A couple of brave souls also had a very, very spicy ginger beer - the total opposite of the pudding. Throughout our time at the restaurant, a man at the next table would occasionally come lean over at various intervals with questions and opinions. "Why are you guys here? Is this a school trip?' We explained that we were a few years out of college, and this was just a few friends here for fun. "I think it's amazing that you are here." This was nice. And then best of all, "I've been here for four years, and I think this is most beautiful thing I have ever seen. A white man with a black woman, all here having food from Ghana. This is amazing. I love this country." The person he was referring to was neither my girlfriend or black, but no matter. At the end of a long and filling day in the Bronx, he got the sentiment exactly right. We do live in a great country, where in just the course of an afternoon it's possible to fully immerse yourself in the cuisine and culture of a faraway place, and meet people who are excited and pleased that you're here. read more

I've came for lunch twice. the first time, the experience started off HORRIBLE! A female server was extremely rude and screamed at me and my coworker when we was deciding what to order. There was no one in line after us and the place was not crowded so we were not keeping anyone from placing an order. The owners son came and apologized. He then helped us with our order so that we could leave there somewhat satisfied. Today, I went and the same lady was there. She was not as rude as before. When you go, you have to watch out for the pricing. There isn't a menu board showing the prices for the items so they kind of say any price which can lead to you paying $11 for something you can get at the Spanish restaurant across the street for $7. read more

I followed my co worker to this place and just copied her exact order. They give very generous portions, this is a two meal portion. I got the stewed chicken with rice and beans (waakye), spaghetti noodles and the powder (gari). My favorite thing is the fish based spicy hot sauce. It has so much flavor and just the perfect amount of heat. I think it's hard to order if you aren't familiar with the food. If i just walked in off the street, I would probably be so lost. The only thing that I would be wary of is the cleaniness of the restaurant. Its one of those places where you just don't want to know what goes on in the back because the food is so good. In the 1990s the restaurant was known as the African and American Restaurant on University Avenue, it then burned down in the early 2000s, only to be reborn as Accra at the corner of Burnside and Davidson, just a block away from the 4 train stop. A much better location, but the food is just as good! Authentic Ghanaian fare, wakey, jollof rice, fufu, banku etc with a choice of delicious soups (okra, ground nut -- peanut, palm nut, and more). My personal favorite is gari and beans, with a side of fried yam and plantains. read more

The women working in this establishment are rude and dishonest. I had an awful experience. I asked for fufu and was given banku instead and also asked for goat and was given cow feet instead. She gave me what ever she wanted to because she didn't think i would know the difference. Then the woman tried to argue with me when i came right back and asked for a refund and told me i should of brought the food back "correctly" as if she could of resold it after i opened it seeing my whole order was incorrect. Before they had the menu up, they would charge me what ever they felt like charging me to the point where idk how much their food is suppose to be. Almost all of these women should be fired and replaced. I've been living in this neighborhood for 20 plus years as a Ghanaian American and I'm surprised how disrespectful they are every time I walk in there regardless of how polite and respectful I am. I was kind of disappointed with the kenkey and tilapia I had. I wanted to have banku at first but it was finished for the day, which wasn't a big shocker since I came there later in the afternoon and the banku usually finishes in the morning. The kenkey I had was pretty good, but kind of dry. The tilapia was a disappointment though. I had expected the fish to be grilled or at least fried, but it was boiled and didn't taste anywhere near like the tilapia I had in Ghana. Also the pepper was too hot. But the Alvaro was as good as I had remembered it from Ghana. I hope their other food such as the rice and gari, okra stew and so on is better. But the kenkey and tilapia was not worth it's price of around $17 read more

Today I fell in love with Accra. The red red with plantains and spicy beef was literally amazing. My friend who accompanied me spent several months living in Accra (, Ghana) and assured me that this was totally authentic. The pepper (hot sauce) was SO GOOD-spicy, savory, the kind of hot sauce I want with every meal. May have been my first time, but will not be my last. The whole restaurant had a very laid back vibe. Also, the women that work here are so sweet-they chatted with my friend for a while about Ghana ("Why did you leave?!") and gave us their recommendations. An honest 10/10 food experience.
