I've never had a bad experience here. I'm a big fan of lamb so it's what I normally order. Unlike some restaurants in Harlem that could be very intimidating this is not one of those. They have a staff knowledgeable of the food/menu and they will make suggestions. The restaurant was recently renovated. The customers here are also friendly. Believe me when I tell you I stand out from a crowd I do and no one here has ever been judgmental. Service is super fast. I love the food !!! Excellent! First time trying Senegalese food and it was amazing! The portions are huge, and the food is very flavorful. It was very busy and people were coming in non stop to pic up orders, and there was a line to order when we walked in. The tables were all occupied and we were worried that we wouldn't be able t to eat in. Luckily one table opened up and we grabbed it while the one of us stayed in line to finish ordering. My wife loves this place she orders from there all time. It has excellent service, and polite staff. The food is always fresh. If you order for pickup the food is nice and hot and ready to go whenever you get there. We have been going there for over 10 or more years. I will say only let week my wife had a complaint. One of the best Senagelese spots around! The dhibi is a must have and so is their shawarma (after 8pm). The food is halal too! My favorite dish here is the dhibi with the rice. The rice comes with sautéed onions and an egg. Everything is just so flavorful. You can't go wrong here! read more

I really shouldn't be surprised as the review say the customer service is bad. What's shocking is the waitress had no help. She had to take order, deal with upset patrons, answer phone and collect money while other staff members just walked around giving no aide and on cell phone. None of them had on mask. One person only had on gloves to take out garbage. The place is tiny and packed with all the tables and tape (view pics). Very unorganized. We placed order and still had to wait. The food was Incredibly salty. Could not even enjoy the pepper as it tasted like a crushed Maggie cube. I was first introduced to this delish fish dish at a small hole in the wall place off the Grand Concourse called "Fatima's" many a years ago. It's long since closed, and I've been searching high and low for a replacement. So I was super excited to try Fouta's. The salad here was very fresh and covered in pickled onions, one of my favorites, topped with ranch dressing. The couscous was dry, plain and flavorless. The veggies were...Well undescribable, at first I thought it was a condiment placed over the couscous and it may have been, because I still can't make out what it was? It was unlike the large chunks of cabbage and carrots I'm accustomed to with this dish. Finally, the fish! Both fish came with pickled onions and were a bit over done, however, they were tasty. Now if they left the fish tender instead of over cooking it until it became dry, this place would have become a game changer for me. Although the food may be good here the service is incredibly bad. They never have food ready on time. The people that are at the front of the desk are never friendly or willing to help you. The only benefit is that the food is so good at this restaurant. But you're almost scared to say anything to them because you don't know if you're gonna get your food how you want it. I ordered my food over the phone 20-30min. When I arrived in my uber by food was not ready. I was told 30 min. I ordered the dibi lamb and jollof. After some sorting out I paid for my food. Waited an additional 15 min and finally got my food. Once home I did not have jollof what I paid extra for but instead a large pan of couscous. I was very disappointed. The dibi lacked any flavor. I have only been to 4 West African restaurants, so by no sense am I an expert on West African food. I definitely enjoyed my experience at Fouta. The service was surprisingly great. Every experience I've had at a West African Restaurant (again, very few) I have had to wait for food for a very long time and the wait staff was always inattentive. I am told by my boyfriend, he's Guinean, that this is typical! This time, we we greeted by a friendly waitstaff and quick service. We order the Grilled Lamb and Leg of Lamb. Both of these are very large dinner portions, so come hungry or just share a platter if you don't want to take food home. The meat for the leg of lamb basically fell off the bone and was definitely the favorite between the two, although they were both great. Each dish came with couscous, plantains (cooked maduros style) or french fries. You could also get a salad, which I recommend since most of the food was also very greasy. If I lived in the neighborhood, it would definitely be on my rotation of places to get food. The service is good and food is priced decently for the portion you receive. read more

The food is great, the portions are awesome. But why does all their rice smell like it was burnt? I mean even the cheb Chen... tastes like it's always burnt and undercooked. The bishap (green spinach) should taste less sour. But I do love the jakree (the grain in the creamy/milky stuff). But their ginger juice is awesome. I've been going here for years. It's a staple in the community. I've had a few different things here. The jollof rice / thiebu jen is great . The red one is way better than their white one. The Senegalese spot on white plains has way better white thieb. I didn't really enjoy their mafe but maybe it was prepared in a way I'm not familiar with. I would like to try their soupa konja. The poisson (fish) attieke is a great pick. All my friends love their dibi as well. Try the bissap. It's just like Caribbean sorrel but I think they put a little orange juice and mint in it. Went here around 3 in the afternoon with my boyfriend, we sat ourselves at one of the tables, sat there for 15 minutes before we realized we had to place our order at the counter first, the lady behind the counter watched us for the full 15 minutes and didn't say anything, a guy who worked there who was eating, also didn't say anything. (I assumed he worked there because he went towards behind the counter after his meal.) We looked at the menu and she told us "you don't look at the paper, you ask what we have" What? Um okay. The food is fresh, hot, and halal. The portions are always big you must certainly get your money's worth and the taste is great. I've had several different entrees jollof rice,debe, and the fish and have never been disappointed the taste is consistently good. They also sell fresh sorrel/sorbel and ginger drinks however the taste if the sorrel was if putting on more than one occasion so no more of that for me. They keep pretty late hours and at they a steady rush from 6 p.m.going as that is when they begin to serve the debe. I have to say that I love this restaurant. I have dined there for the first time five years when my boyfriend who is from Togo introduced me to it. I definitely enjoyed the Dibi with salad very much. After that visit I have eaten there again over the years and even went once by myself to eat the Dibi. This past week I ate there three times. Twice I had Akobantana with white rice and Akopute with white rice. Most recently, I ate the lamb with jollof rice and it was absolutely wonderful. The portions were very reasonable and the prices are accommodating as well. The owner is very friendly and the staff is as well. The first west african restaurant I've ever been too. It's memorable because it was the first dinner date, I had been to with my boyfriend, who is from west africa himself (Guinea, Conakry!) Other than that, it's okay. The owner, isn't very friendly. Never says "Hello" or "Thank You", just has the same expression on his face. Mafe tiga, which is one of my favorite dishes on the menu, is fairly good. It's a Peanut butter stew with beef, over their version of brown rice. I went there on a Saturday afternoon and the waitress didn't even offer us a seat. We stood a few mins then picked a table. No menu. She was there and saw us come in but didn't even flinch. I went to the counter to get the menu but every time we picked something off the menu she said they didn't have. She ended up pointing at 4 dishes available from the entire menu. Such a shame that we travelled almost 1.5 hrs to come to this place and left hungry. The next place we went to was much better and we ate everything we wanted.
