Title: Unfair Treatment & Community Disappointment at Kings Beach Ace I've been shopping at this Ace Hardware for 6-7 years as a loyal customer. Unfortunately, my experience recently has been nothing short of disappointing, unprofessional, and frankly, humiliating. It began when I returned an item (a Dewalt angle grinder) and was told I couldn't receive my refund in cash because it was over $100. I was told to wait for a check. When I waited to speak to the assistant manager at the back of the store, he informed me we needed to speak with the store manager Shera -- who also happens to be his wife -- about an unspecified issue. Shera had previously made me extremely uncomfortable years ago when she followed me closely around the store while she was still just an employee. It was so unsettling that I had to report it to the store manager at the time. That issue was supposedly resolved. I believe her behavior may have stemmed from an unrelated misunderstanding that occurred over six years ago--long before Shera was even working there. I personally resolved that misunderstanding with the store owner, and we left things on good terms. However, once Shera became the new manager and appointed her husband as assistant manager, the situation shifted. It feels as though old, irrelevant history was used against me, and their personal feelings began interfering with my ability to shop at my local hardware store. I was then told by the assistant manager that I had been watched on camera by him the entire time I was shopping and he believed I was behaving "suspiciously" -- stating things like me picking up an item and putting it down in a different aisle/ location and looking at my phone while shopping. Apparently, those things were "weird" he said followed by me no longer being welcome or allowed to shop at their establishment moving forward. It was apparent, based on personal feelings, they had been trying to find any reason to remove me And were tired of waiting. A employee even once pulled me aside and admitted that every time I entered, staff talked about me over their radios making negative comments and taking turns watching me as I shopped. Now, I have to drive 20+ minutes to another store, and in a small town like Kings Beach, this kind of treatment -- especially with word getting around -- is extremely damaging and embarrassing. read more

As someone who lives locally I despise going to this store. Since the new owners took over you can't rent equipment here, they lack a lot of items and just have a ton of Knick- knacks, the customer service is terrible- the staff is a bunch of young incompetent kids, and the manager Shara is so rude, disrespectful, unwelcoming and unprofessional. I'm surprised she hasn't gotten fired for her bad attitude. Trying to do a return, find something they don't have or any issues you basically have she turns on you. I've seen her yell at staff and I literally dread going in there. MoMo is the only one I like dealing with. They also send me coupons in the mail and every time I try to use them they either say it doesn't apply or they don't have the item and won't offer a replacement of similar value. Why send coupons then?! Their prices are also very high. I also don't trust them to mix my paint as I've had them mess up before on it and then won't let me return it even when it's not open. Would not recommend Benjamin Moore. It has not been able to cover existing paint even after multiple coats of primer. Do yourself and favor and go to Sherwin Williams in Truckee and Ace in Incline. read more

It's actually insane to me how this Ace has such poor reviews. The staff were well informed and extremely helpful. They spent probably 30 minutes with me looking for very specific plumbing fixtures for a complex problem I ran into. Better selection an inventory than Tahoe City. 5 stars all around. Drove to this location because online the website said they had mulch in stock. A bit out of season for February...but I need some so that dirt isn't tracked into my house. I brought my 6 month old daughter (because I am a solo parent half the month), got a cart and struggled to get inside...no one offered to open the door or help. When I asked the older man at the register where the mulch was he said "it would be too difficult to get to, sorry". Complete apathy. I won't go back to this store. read more

We have owned this summer house for 75 years. The Ace Store is jam packed with all sorts of merchandise, but Shara always helps us find what we need. Her husband even came to our house after work to help us install a dimmer switch! How is that for service with a smile! read more

I have been going there for years. It is under new ownership and only one longtime and knowledgeable employee remains. I now often drive an extra 15 minutes each way to shop at Incline Village ACE. Kings Beach ACE is often out of seasonal items because staff is not experienced to know what to order. In this case it was asphalt driveway crack filler. I asked if I should call to check and reply was I have to talk to a certain lady as nobody else knows how to see what's coming in or is on a delivery which usually comes late morning. So I walk into this ace hardware to grab some sealant and the manager lady Shara was a completely rude and disrespectful person! Just because one of my friends was walking in with me she told me that I had to leave the store because SHE didn't want me in the store. my friend has never done anything to make her be this way towards her, and this was my first time ever purchasing something from this store. She refused to return an item I purchased because she is descriminating me and my man as well as our friend who like we did nothing wrong. My man has been a customer with Ace for 39 years! Never ever had an issue before until Shara! I've never ever in my life recieved such terrible disrespectful poor customer service! We are furious! I have been here numerous times recently and the employees DO NOT wear masks. They require customers to wear masks, but obviously hold themselves to a different standard. In addition, the employees are not helpful or even friendly. They act like it's an unbearable chore to do their job. I do not recommend this location and will no longer be supporting it myself. read more

They don't take returns without a receipt or for unopened tools, nor do they honor ACE corporate coupons (which they mail you once you sign up for the rewards program), and they have limited selection with high prices. I have been with north shore be hardware since this pandemic started. I've lost a family member and both my grown kids had it. It broke my heArt to hear the pain in their voices when ide call. They wouldn't let me by them.i want to say that most of our customers treats us like they are greatful and are awesome they are polite and don't get so demanding when they see we are busy. I just want to say to all the negitivity out there that we are short staffed and we work long hours and have been right there in front and have tried making things good for all. I have good days and bad days like anyone but when someone comes.in and is demanding and short I want you to remember how we feel. I don't see why we can't just follow the rules for a minute so maybe just maybe this will help things . I mean all of the ones taking a stand and not doing what's asked has not made it better. Let's all try to get along and be good to one another. Our store is a essential business and we are trying our best to get what you need our policy's are lax compared to others. It was disappointing today to see two out of the three employees not wearing masks; they didn't even have them in a pocket or around their neck. This review is a mixed bag. Had a great experience the other day with above and beyond customer service, but the fact that all employees are not wearing masks means I will take my business elsewhere. I've been a customer of this store for over 30 years. Some of the long time staff have always been a little grouchy, but if asked they will help you out and they know their stuff. A couple of weeks ago I needed a part to fix the plumbing on my RV trailer. It was not something that the store stocked. But one of the staff, and old timer whose name I should know, had just purchased a part through the Ace catalog to fix his own trailer that would do the job. He sold it to me no questions asked and would reorder the part for himself. We got on with our camping trip with little delay and I was very appreciative. Now, Ace Management, get ALL your employees to wear masks! One staff member (younger guy with tatoos) never wears a mask. I wear a mask to protect your staff and your other customers. Bought Quality Chain Corp QV331 tire chains $120 at North Shore Ace Hardware store, Kings Beach near Lake Tahoe, CA 12/23/19. Pics show new chains have rust in several places. Although correctly installed, within 5 miles of driving at 20-30mph, 1 cable broke. The owner Paul's response when I told him what happened, "I don't care if you have pictures. They were stored out back and did get wet, but rust won't affect them. I never give returns on tire chains." Same Quality Chain Corp QV331 chains @Autozone $81.99. My mistake not returning the rusty chains immediately. read more

I am glad that I came here and not following the bad reviews on here. Don't know why they don't have more stars. I tried calling a "sporting goods" store to see about a personal heater and they had got an attitude with me saying they weren't a hardware store. Where I am from we have Big 5, Dicks, Sports Authority and they all carry space heaters. Anyways I came here, walked in and was looking down the isles and an employee came up to me asking if he could help me find anything and I told him I was looking for a heater and he walked me to where they were and I asked between two which was the better option for me for a hotel room. Checkout lady refuses to wear a mask properly, constantly over her chin and mouth instead of nose.

The service here is terrible! Although they are even inflating the new tube to help us enjoy our new purchases, the owner or manager dude is super rude! The price is comparable compared to what most retailers are offering during this historic snowy winter season. Parking is ample since they're easily located right off the main road. There is no public restroom, they accept credit cards, reasonable prices, and despite the amount of money we spent, the manager level of service was subpar all around! The other employees were very helpful even though they knew the manager was not willing to work with our situation. Will definitely not return on our next visit to North Lake Tahoe! Do not bother buying the $25 vinyl tube. It will break on the first try and the manger will not return it or offer a discount for the patch. So not cool. read more

Not even worth 1 Star. This business is horrible, the owner is awful, so disrespectful, doesn't give ANY one the time of the day. He treats his workers like they do not even exist. I typically find everything i need here and the staff, for the most part is efficient & very helpful. They carry a wide variety of paints and hardware tools. I do a lot of DIY projects so i enjoy coming here because it's walking distance from my house. I came here recently with my boyfriends uncle in search of chains for his truck. The Spanish girl working the counter, i don't recall her name, was unnecessarily RUDE! I remember when she started working here last year, she was pleasant & helpful. A lot changed in the course of a few months. When we didn't know the tire size but said we can look it up, she barked at us saying "you better go check because we don't do refunds". There was certainly a nicer way of letting us know. When came home, got the tire measurements, and called to verify they carried them. The same girl answered the phone and yelled at my friend saying "i told you we don't have them" & hung up on us. We ended up going to Tahoe city & finding what we needed, with great customer service. If you dislike your job, especially since you work in customer service, then i suggest you not work here. I'll be veering away from this location, even though it's conveniently located, simply because i want to feel welcome in a store, not pushed out. read more

The store policy is to not accept tools back. A set of drill bits and metal cutoff wheels were purchased by my client but not needed. Unused and in perfect condition, purchased two days before, a refund was denied. I have never been to a store with such a policy. I will only shop there again under emergency conditions. read more

North Shore Ace Hardware is closer to my home. Easy to get to and can usually find what I am looking for. The 2 star rating is because North Shore Ace Hardware employees are not wearing masks. However their customers were wearing masks - seems the responsible thing to do during pandemic. Note the Ace Hardware in Truckee (Mountain Hardware) requires masks during pandemic and enforces the California mandate for indoor shopping. I'll be shopping in Truckee, my personal safety worth the extra drive. read more

I used to really like this local business years ago, back when they were True Value. I still prefer not having to go to Reno to shop and try to shop locally when possible. The fact that they're open at least a few hours on Sunday gets them one of the stars I'm giving, but... I am sad to have found that the Kings Beach Ace Hardware's customer service has gone way downhill compared with years past. There were two instances (and yes, learned my lesson so there won't be a third) where I had last-minute needs to shop there. Both times I carefully gauged my time (ie, can I get there before they close?) and concluded yes I could, and with a couple minutes to spare, only to find they had locked the doors a few minutes early. They tried to avoid eye contact while they were shutting down their registers just a few feet inside the front door where I stood staring in, incredulous, but then they just gave me the 'no, we are closed, so go away' gestures. I can't imagine that closing even a couple minutes before the posted closing time would be the wishes of this store's owner, especially when there are customers trying to shop, still, but they seemed to have hired employees who don't care about meeting that expectation. All I wanted the last time was to run in and buy a paint brush. They might not have lost a big sale by closing early that day but for the three minutes it would have taken to sell me that brush they lost much more future business - because unless this store is the only option I will shop elsewhere in the future. read more

I shop here very regularly and 9 times out of 10 they have what I need. Anytime I don't have to head down to Reno for something is a victory in my book. This store is small (it's certainly no Home Depot or Lowes) but they still manage to stock just about anything you need for home repairs or DIY projects. I have been using North Shore Hardware for close to two decades and I think a lot of the past reviews do this place a disservice. ...it's a wonderful mom - and - pop style hardware store.....run by a crew of dudes who've all worked there for a long time and come from a range of trades so they know what they're selling and what will work for you....its a utilitarian store that sells goods to get the job done....if you're looking for ladies pink Cardhart work clothes or cheesy crap that tourists buy for their vacation homes, yes, please go to Truckee or Incline...you'd be a better fit there...but for a local honest-to-goodness hardware store that has what you need, the crew in KB has it....is it overpriced??...of course it is....welcome to Tahoe....if you buy a pint of Ben and Jerry's at 7-11 expect to pay double there too...locals call this place the jewelry store because it's so expensive. ..but.it is what it is....they have what you need and you don't have to trips to Reno or CC to get it...time is money...and to hear past reviewers bellyache about the female cashiers not knowing much about anything is kinda silly....they're cashiers....do you ask the register girl at Walmart how to repair your landscape irrigation system?!?!...ask any guy that works there and they'll have experience and an answer....try that at home depot or lowes these days....that is, if you can find somebody...... read more

We have two remodeles to finish in Kings Beach. We will go elsewhere for our needs. The women staff there are the worst!!! We have come here for the last 2 months, and always leave with feeling we are putting them out. They never thank you when you check out. Today I needed an item, and needed help to find it in the store. The woman checker seemed put out that I couldn't find the right item. and then she didn't help me in determining what size I needed even though I had a sample of it in my hand. Turns out I got the wrong size and had to bring it back right away because we were doing the job right then. I could not believe the ATTITUDE and reprimand I recieved!!! I was apalled at her telling me it was all my fault, and that I wouldn't listen to HER! She didn't give me any help! I told her I didn't appreciate her attitude. She still said it was my fault! She was unbelievably RUDE!!!! They also never thank you when you check out. We will NEVER shop there again. Today was the last straw. read more

I can't stand shopping here. It's the closest hw store to our vacation home but I make an effort to avoid it and go to the excellent stores in Tahoe City or Incline. The selection is fine and the prices typical for ACE outfits, but the checkout staff are just so glum and indifferent. Last week I was looking for a window fan and couldn't find one elsewhere. I braced myself to go here and found what I was looking for. Alas, the cosmos made me pay for breaking my own rule as the fan was defective and I had to return it. Sure enough, the counter lady did her best to make me feel like I was truly wasting her time, including suggesting that I was somehow scamming them. Never again! I recommend you try the other stores but if you truly must go here, don't expect it to be one of those stores with staff who like to help you (which is, after all, one of the key differentiators of these little h/w stores). read more
