I'm a little intimidated by hardware stores but needed to fix something and I didn't know what I was doing so walked in and looked for help immediately. Candy assisted me and was wonderful! She thoroughly explained what she thought the problem was, found the part that I needed and then explained again how to install it. She told me to hang onto my receipt and bring it back if the part wasn't the right one. Extremely kind, courteous and helpful! And spoiler alert - the part fit perfectly. I needed some things to fix some stuff in the Sprinter van and this Ace Hardware was on the way. It's so nice to avoid the big box stores and shop somewhere local. The store is quite full with darned near everything. I located the hardware department, found the screws of the right size and spotted a reasonably priced battery-powered screwdriver. while every visit can be different for so many reasons, their services offered are unmatched by any other store. yes prices vary and peoples moods change, but where can you go to ask advice, opinion or help with the simplest of things. remember what it is... a neighborhood hardware store with local people willing to help. Great store not much to say bad about it, except the fact the one of the older gentleman smells of alcohol, I believe his name is John. Good guy I can tell he tried but his knowledge of some of the products is poor. He tried his best at paint one day for me but had to call another person up. She was able to help me get the best match from the Sample I had brought in. I often shop here and the employees are great people and jump to help when needed. This Ace has a great selection. Shelves are re-stocked quickly when needed. Always someone to help with a question, or tell you where something is in the store. A couple more "green friendly" products, like an alternative to RoundUp, would be great. However, its a 5 star location. read more

I honestly don't know where to begin. Simplest is there IS a mask order in place, however, in this place all you have to say is "no" and no one cares if you have it on or not. Interesting how it is mandated, yet I appears this store has no consideration for anyone or anything other than the almighty dollar. But, I was totally appalled by the conduct of 2 employees. It appeared as if an older gentleman had made a mistake of some sort at which time a younger employee decided it was best to berate this gentleman in the middle of the store to the point it was making me uncomfortable and nervous just being there. The longer the young man continued, the more heated the exchange became, to the point of a barrage of "F" bombs (mostly from the younger) exchanged. Where was management, or was this kid a manager? If so, he needs some serious retraining, or maybe a new a job somewhere NOT customer service related. In an era where we have Home Depot & Menards, the only reason I go to Ace in Wauconda is to get Wauconda lawn stickers. While I'm there, if I notice a product I need, I would get it also. I was told that they can sharpen the lawn mower blades & that's good to know. read more

I frequent ACE 1-2 a week, close to home, neighborhood quick stop, always are courteous and helpful. Definitely don't have everything of Menards or Home Depot then again it's not what their business model is. That's like comparing a Walmart to a Walgreens. Always an easy go-to for short term easy around the house fixes or necessities. Have to agree, the older more tenured employees definitely are a little more rough around the edges, but get passed that are very knowledgable. read more

Call me nostalgic, but roaming the isles of an Ace Hardware store in my youth was one of my favorite memories as a child. Over the years, The store has stayed the same, the staff, always a little seasoned with a Wealth of knowledge and life. The experience and helpful hand is well worth a less limited supply of lit let everything your house could have an more. Sure it might not have everything in massive, over abundant quantities that the Home Depot down the road has. When you just need those one or two items I'd run to the Ace any day. My favorite part is the lack of cheap S**T everywhere. You just do not see that kinda stuff at ace, no one is really selling you anything they are simply supplying you with the right tool for the right job. That's what a hardware store is for. Of course I shop at the big box stores, I have a house and I have filled it with all kinds of things I really do not need. But when it comes down to fixing, rigging or just plain Macgyver-ing something together Ace is certainly the place. This is the way Hardware stores used to be and should be again. Gotta question, just ask one of the many people working there. If they can't answer they will find someone who can. Little things like cutting small glass shelves are almost a lost art and certainly not done at the big box stores. You might pay a touch more, but I'll gladly do this if it means helping to keep this gem in business. The kids working at night really ruin your stores image. All the outside lights are off and the darkening shades are down looking like the store is closed. Went in the other night and all of them were huddled in the paint department talking and laughing with a care in the world. I walked right by and didn't get a hello or any kind of acknowledgment. So I ordered some stuff from ace hardware and it was shipped only to be considered damaged by fed ex, so I contacted customer care and the asked if I would like a refund or replacement. So of course I needed the product so I said replacement. Yet again I have not received the product, I contacted customer care again they told me they shipped it and I needed to contact fedex so I did, fedex said it was lost package that I needed to contact ace. Ace online is horrible. I ordered 4 bags of 10 masks each among other things. 3 of the 4 bags of sterile masks were delivered unsealed, open and dirty when they arrived. I called Customer Service to request new masks ($110 worth) and they ask me to send pictures, fill out forms etc. I did everything and in the end they offered me a $30 refund because they determined that the fact the mask were delivered completely open and dirty out of their packaging was not considered a problem. I definitely do NOT recommend buying anything from ACE as they do not care if the product if defective or damaged, even when they are sterile masks. Do not waste your money. Extremely poor customer service. If I could give it zero stars, I would. read more

Ok, so there are surely positives and negatives when it comes the ACE Hardware in Wauconda. I shop at this Ace Hardware a lot(at least 2-3 times a week) since it is near my house and on my way home from work. I have been shopping there for the better part of 5 years. It seems that the newer staff has been trained to go out of their way to help customers and answer questions. The more tenured staff likes to ignore you and talk down to you. The store does tend to have the items I want in stock, and I don't have to buy them in bulk(like at the big box hardware stores) Items tend to be more expensive than the big box hardware stores unless it has a mail in rebate. Positives are: location(Don't have to drive 25 minutes to the nearest big box hardware store), the rewards program and Mail in rebates(I have gotten many purchases for free or just a few dollars). Negatives: Pricey on most items compared to big box hardware stores, Staff, some of the more tenured staff are not very helpful or courteous. and lastly checkout can be a loooong wait at times read more

Very disappointed in ace hardware. I went in for something else, and spotted some cute little light up Xmas hats. There was no price on the shelf, or on the hats, so I took one to the cashier and it rang up $4.99. So I grabbed four. When I got home I looked at my receipt, and noted that I was charged $4.99 for two, $6.99 for one, and $7. 99 for one. The last two were exactly alike, except for the designs on them. So back I went. The cashier was very rude, so I asked for the manager. The manager scanned a hat, and said those are the prices. No explanation for why two hats were different prices, or even why the two hats that were alike were different. Unfortunately I had already given the hats to the children, otherwise I would have returned them. So watch out for prices on your stuff. If it doesn't have a price on it, they make one up, and that's that. They have made me a Home Depot customer! read more

Whatever I'm trying to find out, I can find someone who can either explain what I need to do or tell me what I want to do isn't going to work, and why, which is just as important. I use basic tools and I can always get them sharpened/repaired/replaced at Ace. They also don't get upset when I want to use a product in a way it isn't planned to be used. They WILL tell me whether or not they think what I want to do will work, and why. I've been to Home Depot and Menards, but haven't found their personnel to be as helpful and knowledgeable as the Ace employees. And those other stores' employees freak at the thought of using an item for something they haven't been taught it can be used for. read more

I have shopped at the Wauconda store for years, the prices are a bit high, but for the convenience it was worth it and the staff is typically very helpful. However, recently I took my snowblower there to be maintenanced and they send them out to the Round Lake store. I have called and stopped in to the Wauconda store asking the status of my blower and they refer me to the Round Lake store. So I called the Round Lake store several times and when transferred to the service department, no one answers. Ok, so they get busy, I left a voicemail. Several days now, no return call. So I stopped into the Wauconda store today to check again, again they have no idea what is going on. I insisted they call the Round Lake store and they put me on the phone when it started ringing. Again, I got the recording. I gave my blower to the Wauconda store, they should be my advocate and get me a status from Round Lake, instead they keep telling me to chase the Round Lake store. I won't be shopping there as often and I won't be taking any more small motor tools there for service. For a few additional miles I'll go to Lowes and Home Depot. read more
