I was looking for a place to get some work done on my laptop and realized every coffee place in Midtown would be packed. Hotel lobbies are great for this purpose as they are plentiful and in general open to the public. I love the Ace Lobby, which is grand and makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. The coffee offered in the bar (apart from Stumptown that's connected) is quite good, surprising because it's more of a matcha bar. And there's plenty of seating with outlets, both long communal desks and lounge seating with little tables. I spent a few hours here and it was really just perfect. A couple years ago, I grabbed drinks here later at night with friends which was a lot less perfect, but I'll chalk it off as an isolated incident (shady types looming around and not much in the way of security). I'd come back again for cocktails, but most likely would keep it to happy hour time. read more

Writing this because the bartender added more on the tip on two different bills (same girl)! This is messed up and i bet most people don't notice and in reality i didn't pick up on it. But unfortunately expenses software noticed things like this now. It was a dumb and unnecessary move on her part to do especially given that these drinks are roughly $20 a pop. The difference got flagged when i did my expenses there was a mismatch. $1 on one bill and $2 on another. Please keep your receipts from this place as the $3 wasn't worth my time to follow up on let alone write this review. I can see the appeal of the Ace Hotel's bar for late night drinks, but it's definitely not an appealing place for happy hour drinks or drinks during the day. The contrast between daylight and the darkness of the hotel is too much. I met a friend for drinks and snacks, and we ordered the cheese and charcuterie plate which was a bit small for $25. Absolutely love coming here after the work, and also on lunch breaks. Their mornings are filled with WFH... or rather Work From Wherever I want kind of folks. It can be quite quiet before 3 with the only loudness being Stumptown's delicious coffee being served in the lobby and next door, they're Mocha Latte is my go to, please try it and let me know what you think with a thumbs up or down if it allows.... I know you'll be sticking to the formal option ;). After 3 pm is where the magic happens, aka happy hour. They have a great selection of cocktails and meals like their Wagyu Beef Burger which is to die for--- I have to try it in a medium format next time rather than medium-well, it's served with perfectly salted fries and a long dill pickle on the side if you're into that. If you find their chicken tender selection it's great as well. At around 7 pm a DJ starts to fill their ambience with different type of music from house, deep house to piano work. It's perfect for any kind of group there's pockets of the lobby that can serve for more intimate conversations allowing you to forget the environment around you... All the employees here are awesome, shoutouts and much to the bartenders, front desk and doormen. read more

Great drinks and good food. I had the Black Cherry Old Fashioned and the La Renarde. Both were well balanced and spirit forward, definitely recommend. The tuna tartare was great, I liked the flavor and a decent portion for an appetizer. The bean tapenade was good too, it's like a bean hummus. I would say it wasn't served with enough bread and it was a bit too cold for what it should have been. Atmosphere was nice at first glance, but kind of lost its appeal the longer I sat there. After a while I felt like I was at a republican's bar in DC, with the elk head on the wall, the enormous American flag behind the bar, and the huge columns and leather seats. read more

Both of my experiences with the Ace Hotel Lobby Bar were during the morning hours during my two night stay at the hotel for a work conference. While I didn't adore the hotel itself, I did love the Hotel Lobby Bar staff and experience. During my stay, I enjoyed the oatmeal with fruit along with cappuccinos both mornings. When I checked into the hotel, they provided a token that covered one of the drinks and breakfast which I thought was a really nice touch. The space is very dark which seems ideal for the evening scene but a little depressing/sad in the morning hours. Again, standout staff - wish I had written down their names to include them here. A bar located in the hotel lobby that takes a massive piece of real estate on the first floor. Whenever I walk in here, during the earlier hours it's lit a little better and there are people working on laptops and seat around the lounge space. Later on in the evening, you just see a lot of people having drinks and ordering from the bar. They do have some beers, although they tend to have more bottled and canned beers than from the tap. They also have bathrooms downstairs, as well as a liberty space that you can reserve downstairs for events. It's an interesting place to hang out, gets quite loud, but looks very different given its tall ceiling and the couches and bar seating around the lobby. read more

As someone who frequently comes to the Stumptown Coffee that's located in this hotel, I was always curious about this hotel lobby bar. Even without getting something to eat/drink, Ace Hotel's lobby area is open to the public and is a popular space to bring your work. Many people are on their laptops during the day. I hadn't had a chance to explore this space at night and got a recent chance to try out the bar. There's plenty of seating, with large sofas and armchairs for more of a casual setting if that's what you prefer. The lighting here is usually pretty dim so it adds to the ambiance and experience. I didn't order a drink from the lobby bar but ended up trying out their French Onion Soup since I visited during dinner hours. It was a perfect choice for the cold and rainy day outside. I like trying out French Onion Soups from different places and I have to say the melted cheese on top of this one was memorable. Instead of the halfway-sagging melted cheese on top of the soup, this cheese was perfectly intact and neatly perched on top of the bowl, lightly burnt on the surface for the appropriate amount of crispiness on top. It seemed like the cheese they used was really authentic too. You do have to be prepared for the smell though, because the strong cheese smell seems to indicate how authentic it is. If you're visiting on a cold, rainy day like I did, I recommend trying this soup out. Even if you don't order the soup, this place is still worth the visit for its casual ambiance and experience. read more

Then came a lady with a cute little chihuahua sitting next to me. So ok dogs are allowed here. I actually came here around 7 years ago to meet my college roommate who was visiting NYC from Boston. I forgot about it, until I saw photos recently of the hotel lobby during the daytime and had an aha moment. Anyhow, I came back here in the evening when things are busier. It's got a bit of a weird vibe. First, everything's dark - albeit too dark - to give a cozy date night vibe, but it's probably a bit too busy and cramped for that to happen. Add to that a random deer head and an American flag at the top of the bar and I'm not really sure what the vibe is. One thing for certain - cocktails, spirits, and premium hard liquor is the theme here. Main issue I had though is the service. Just too slow and unresponsive. Took forever to get a bartender's attention to get drinks. Other bartenders/wait staff were uncooperative at times. The service has to be more timely and hospitable. Sure, it doesn't help to only have 1 bar area, but they have to step up. read more

This is a trendy lobby bar with a techie vibe to it. A large table in the center on the room filled with what looked like a team of hackers coding certainly gave it that feel, much like Starbucks has hoards of authors trying to write their first novel. In terms of quiet, spacious places to do work, k-town is a desolate desert. The cafes either don't have wifi, play loud music, or don't have outlets. In a pinch, I found this location and gave it try. There's a long table with tiny lamps and outlets at your feet that could sit 10, then more sofas in the back where you can read, relax, work. The lighting is dim, but for the table space, outlet usage, and the soft Sinatra in the background, it's completely practical. Plenty of other people were there with their laptops doing work. The waiter there who was in charge of the bar/dining is very polite and quick to help you. The drinks/food is pricey, but you're paying for the stay. read more

The most disturbing bar experiences I've had in my life. The bartender is rude, aloof, and complained the entire time he was there. When I tried to order from him he kept saying "no" "I'm tired" and "were closed" even though he was very obviously serving other people. Other people were constantly ordered drinks from him and when I walked away he kept pointing in my direction when talking to his friends who were sitting at the bar as if they were talking about me. As we were preparing to leave he calls me over and says he won't make my drink but will give it to me deconstructed as if he's doing me a major favor. He then said something rude about me in Italian to a friend that I could barely make out. Drinks are great. Ambiance is eclectic and fun. However, if you're a workweek crowd looking to be productive over a cocktail past 5pm, expect to run into an issue. After spending 3 hours in the lobby bar with coworkers, working quietly and racking up a bill at the bar, we were told at 5pm that we had to close our laptops because it conflicts with their "happy hour vibe." They relocated us twice before finally leaving us alone in a specific area they designated acceptable for laptops to be out. Overall, a pretty disappointing experience.
