I can't really comment on the work done by the company, mainly because they never showed up. This is, instead, a review of Ackerman's customer service practices. I called to have a stump removed and the person to whom I spoke said my job would be completed "sometime this week or the next." Once the second week passed, I called back to see why no one had come by or notified me of a change of plans. I was told that the matter would be looked into and that I would receive a call back soon. Another week went by and I heard nothing, so I ended up hiring another company (who did an excellent job). The lack of communication I experienced was very frustrating and I would definitely recommend users to steer clear, especially since there are so many other tree companies in the area that are eager for the business and will do a great job. read more

Ackerman did an amazing job taking down a couple maples. One in the back yard had a section that had already fallen down and they did a wonderful job of taking the existing limbs down and hauling everything away. My wife and I were looking to get a couple of trees in the front of our house taken down with stump removal as well as clean up some dead trees in the back lot. I stumbled upon Ackerman's here on Yelp. I called the number on their webpage and left a message to inquire around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon. By 6:00 Mike the owner had come out to our house to look at our trees and gave us a quote. We had 2 other quotes which were both $500 more than what Mike gave us. That same day we hired Ackerman for the job. Mike said they could come the next day, but I'd prefer they come on a Saturday. They came today at 8:30 where I was greeted by 6 lumberjacks, who were very professional. I reviewed what needed to be done, then they started. Everything was done in about 2 1/2 hours in freezing Chicago winter temps. They cleaned up all the loose branches . Mike the owner was there the whole time watching over. We recently had Ackerman come out to remove a bush, grind some stumps, and assess a split tree, which also had to be removed. The owner was able to come over the same day I called to make an estimate and his price was very fair. They were able to come over within a few days to perform the work. If you are not home, they are able to do the work and leave an invoice, which is great. It took them less than an hour to perform the work and they thoroughly cleaned everything up. I'll definitely call them again if I need similar work in the future. My only complaint is minor, and that is that their truck left a lot of oil stains on my driveway. Not something I'd fault them for, but keep it in mind if you're concerned about oil stains on your driveway. read more

Had these people out for tree trimming and gutter cleaning. They were late with the appointment, never received a call. They didnt even ring my doorbell when they arrived, they just hopped our fence and started work. It's a good thing our dog wasnt out in the yard. They didnt even say they were done they just left. When I went out to check the work, they didnt do a good job, they never cut the branches that were over my roof, which was discussed and included in the estimate. I had to call them back to finish trimming the tree... which took another 3 days for them to come back out and finish the original work ordered. I would steer clear of this place. read more

After getting 3 trees removed in the last year, I can tell you this is the only place that answers the phone regularly, returns messages same day, and gives quotes within 24 hours. They took out a medium pear tree from our backyard with no problem, hauled all the wood away, and mulched the stump . The yard afterwards was very clean. The tree was surrounded by a brick path, deck, and lights, and they managed to keep everything undamaged. Pricing is reasonable. Insured and bonding info given without even asking. Totally disappointed. These guys never showed up on the day they were supposed to show up. So I assumed that they would never show up and went with another contractor who came the same day and trimmed the tree in my backyard for half the cost. The other contractor was honest in the feedback saying that removing the tree was not required since the tree had still some life left in it. I was happy the have the tree pruned nicely and not removed. Fast forward, 3 days later, when I come back home from work, I was shocked to see the tree in my backyard had disappeared. Why can't these guys give me a call if at all they decided to come 3 days later than the day they're supposed to ? Which company is out that will not call the customer before they show up at their residence ? Totally disappointed with my tree gone without my knowledge. We recently purchased a home, but even before we closed on the house I asked Mike to meet me at the house to get an estimate to remove a two crab apple trees, and trim two maple trees that are about 80ft. tall. Even though I wasn't the owner yet, he was happy to oblige and meet me for a free estimate. A month after the estimate, we closed on the house and I called him on a Friday to tell him I wanted to go ahead with the work. We needed a tree removed, scheduled an appointment, and a week before they were supposed to show up, I wake up to 5 guys in the backyard with chainsaws. Appointments mean nothing with this company. There was a language barrier so a child around 8 or 9 was brought along as a translater. They broke 3 solar lights and other yard items that had not been moved yet...because the appointment was a week away. We complained to the owner, he claims "I do not recall" the conversation when the appointment was made. At that time we scheduled for the remaining stump to be removed on Monday. Two days prior, when I'm waiting for furniture to be delivered, they show up again and just start working in the backyard, no knock on the door. I had to ask them to leave several times and they aggressively refused. After 5 minutes of having a kid translate that I need them to go and come back Monday as agreed. A worker smiled at me and then turned his machine back on and kept working. I was told their boss said not to listen to me, just stay and finish the work. We bought an awesome house in Schaumburg a year and a half ago, half acre lot with many mature trees. I don't think any of them had ever seen a trimmer, the yard always seemed damp, green moss was abundant. According to the neighbors our block had frequent power outages due to our branches wrapped around the electric lines. I called 4 tree specialists and got 3 totally different quotes back, the 4th never responded. We went with Ackermans, they seemed to be the most knowledgeable and reasonable. Within 2 days all my trees were trimmed, still had all the shade and the yard seemed even bigger and airier. No more branches touching the roof or neighbors branches hanging over our driveway. We later decided to have a few huge trees removed, again super reasonable and speedy fast and clean. I cannot recommend them enough, they have never let us down. In the recent storms I had a portion of my tree come down on my pool. The limb was not all to large, but had to be removed before it caused further damage. I had Ackerman tree service come to my home for a tree trimming estimate, I told the adviser what I needed done, I pointed out the branches that I needed cut and also made sure to point out that anything that was growing down needed to be trimmed, also since he is the expert I asked for his advise and any suggestions that he may have, we agreed on a price,they came out the next day as promised, but to my surprise they left a few of the branches that are growing down and to my neighbors yards untouched, I pointed this out to the crew and they said, I should have told the adviser and that they were too high, Too high? really? The Ackerman Tree Specialists crew arrived at my home at 8am with a crew of 6. Everyone one couldn't have been more accommodating. They did a major trim and clean up on two large river birch trees, removed an old white birch tree and stump, removed an old burning bush and stump, removed an old evergreen bush and stump and did some thinning on a magnolia tree and and rounded and shaped it beautifully. There were a ton of branches removed. They cleaned and hauled everything away and the work was completed within 1-1/2 to 2 hours. It was amazing to see how efficiently this job was performed and what a great job they did. I'm so pleased with the work they did and would highly recommend this company. I had a blue spruce that went down in my front yard from the storm over the weekend. I called Ackerman after getting an outrageous estimate from Abbott Tree Care and Mike was at my house within 20 minutes and his crew was then here within the hour. Not only did they remove the spruce but 3 others and the total for all of it was less than the $1500 estimate from Abbott. They were done in a few hours and cleaned up after themselves, they raked the areas around the trees. I wish yelp had 10 stars to give as I would give them all. I had a 1/3 of a very large 45' tall locust tree split off the main trunk and fall down during a storm and I needed the rest of the tree taken down before it caused a lot of damage to the neighbors, I contacted Ackerman and Mike came out within a half hour to give me a quote. I am a certified arborist but didn't have the time to do the removal myself. His price was great so I had them do the job. They had to climb the tree and lower each limb by rope to avoid doing damage to all the adjacent fences. I called Ackerman Tree Specialist for a quote to cut down two trees at our church. I spoke with Mike. Mike called the next morning with a quote. Best price in town. A couple days later I gave him the job. The next day his crew, headed by Paul, showed up an hour early, and within 2 hours both trees were down. These were large trees (ash), over 25 years old. The stumps were ground, and the chips removed. Other than where the stumps were, you couldn't tell the trees were just cut down. Excellent job by Paul and his crew. Highly recommended!!! read more

I originally left a very good review for this company however after the work was done I noticed that my Andersen window actually had a circular hole in it through the outside pane of glass (it was a double pane window) that was very obviously done from a rock when the stumping was done. It was approximately 6 ft from the stumping. Since it did not go thru both panes I did not see it right away because my curtains cover a foot of the glass on the windows. When I contacted the company Paul who did the stumping said he would take a look, after at least a dozen messages left for him I tried to email the company but the address on the website is invalid so I texted him. I did receive a phone call that was not pleasant. He wanted evidence that he did the damage. I explained that 2 window companies agreed that it was done with a great deal of force that would be consistent with a rock and that there are rocks now on my much which was not there before. Also let me mention that I also had solar lights and 5 of them were damaged when they removed the tree from my roof. When I mentioned that to Paul he said they were covered by the snow and the crew damaged many peoples solar lights. I understand that accidents happen and that is why companies carry insurance but I was completely blindsided that I was offered a company "credit" for the damage to the window. There is no way that I would ever use this company again so the credit does me no good. I tried to work with him and even got 2 window repair companies to give estimates (that were not Andersen) because my Andersen window was a special order that would cost a great deal more. The lowest estimate was $271 Now I have to pay for the damage he caused out of my pocket because he refuses to take responsibility for the damage he caused. Please think twice before using this company. They do great work but if anything gets damaged it may cost you a more than you thought. read more
