I visited Acme Brick for some fire bricks and fire clay/mortar for a backyard patio project I am working on. Specifically, a charcoal and/or wood grill and firebox for a barbecue smoker. I was very clear and descriptive about my project. The people there seemed nice enough and prices seemed competitive enough. When I asked for the fire mortar, I was very clear that I didn't want the kind that washed away with a spray down with the hose, or even some rain. Unfortunately, I didn't remember which kind that was. So what did they sell me? The water-soluble, premixed kind. My wife and I spent the better part of a weekend installing those bricks, even getting a babysitter to help watch the kids for part of it. After drying for a week, covered by a tarp when it rained, they were left uncovered once. Thank goodness, because I might have had to rip apart and re-do a whole lot more than just the fire brick otherwise. I called the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, partly to complain, partly to advise them that the fire clay they sell is NOT appropriate for outdoor use, perhaps saving future customers a heap of time and aggravation. I was told by a salesman that a couple customers were ahead of me and could he call me back in 15 to 20 minutes. He didn't call, nor did he mention that while normally open Saturday mornings, they wouldn't be open that Saturday. I waited and called Tuesday. So it seems that judging by the lady at the front desk and two salesmen, they don't know much of anything about the products they're selling because none of them had a clue I'd been sold the wrong stuff, even after I'd told them. So the moral of the story is, save yourself a heap of time and aggravation by not assuming that the folks that work for a business know their business, and do your own research. And, the premixed fire clay is not appropriate for outdoor use. Get the powder kind. I got Heat Stop 50. I guess perhaps I could share some of the blame, but now I'm just angry about how much of my time, and my wife's time that was wasted. Weekend time that could have been spent with our young kids. And that I still have to finish pulling bricks apart, scraping all the wrong stuff off, and re-laying all of them. read more
