I knew my Toyota RAV4 was due for a check-up (started making some sounds, misaligned tires, and the brakes felt off after 12 years of driving), but I hesitate to find an auto shop on my own since I have limited car repair knowledge. Fortunately, a good friend of mine recommended Acme Tire & Auto in Rockford, so I decided to call and stop in! My friend and I talked to Alex, whose the owner of Acme Tire & Auto, and he was absolutely friendly and sincere about the work that was needed! The first time I stopped by, I needed an alignment and oil change, which was done very quickly! I needed to head out of town for the week, so Alex was mindful about my limited time in the area. Very reasonable prices! The second time, I came back to get my brakes changed. Per the advice of my friend, he recommended coated rotors since I usually keep my car outside through all the seasons. These guys lied and performed services I never asked for. I was charged for services and never was given a print out of what results they received. It was going in their shop for a misfiring. All this after they already did all the plugs, wires, coils and injectors. I was given the car back after being charged over $170 and was told the problem could come back at any time. Don't go there if you're a woman. They will scam you! They tried over charging me a couple years ago and I decided to go elsewhere. However today, my daughter went there to fix a flat tire and they said the tire pressure sensor wore the inside of the tire down and that her rim was cracked. We just got 4 new tires not even a month ago (NOT from Acme) and nothing was mentioned about the sensor or the rim. How can a sensor wear that much on a tire when she hasn't even put 100 miles on the tires??? She has been driving on it fine for the last month. They are charging her more for one tire than half of what we paid for all four tires! But again, my daughter went there alone. I just believe they take advantage of women. My wife drove here here from Virginia for an extended visit, and after she'd been here for several months it was discovered that braking caused a vibration/chatter. Having received multiple referrals for ACME I brought her car in for inspection and it was determined that front brake work (both pads and rotors) was needed. We made an appointment for the very next day, and when the work was done before lunchtime I was promptly notified that I could pick it up. The folks at ACME are personable, efficient, and professional. And, I believe, dedicated to what they do! On the day our car was evaluated, I observed and interacted with a stranded Detroit couple in the waiting room. Their car had broken down from unknown causes. When I picked up my car I discovered that ACME stuck with the troubleshooting and repair to completion--until 3:00 AM--in order to get this couple back on the road. Alex has a quality that few mechanics seem to possess on a percentage basis. The word is HONEST. His shop is busy and you might have to wait a few days for an appointment, but that's because so many of us have had bad experiences with other car repair shops. People will wait in line when they know they are going to be treated right, whether it's a good restaurant or a car repair shop. Alex doesn't charge extra for his honesty, but you'll need to take your place in line. I have brought several cars to him over the years for air conditioning repair, new tires, new transmissions, exhaust work, electrical gremlins and brakes. If you're in a burning rush, this isn't your place, but he will tell you what needs to fixed ASAP that could leave you broken down by the side of the road. Just had a car come into our dealership that was last serviced at Acme tire. The timing cover is missing, serpentine belt is nearly shredded dipstick tube is broken, and engine cover is just thrown in to the engine compartment. Stay away at all costs. Will give you a quote for one price when you drop it off or over the phone and it will have gone up substantially when it comes time to pick up your vehicle. Also will promise a quick turnaround but then takes forever to complete the job (was promised same day to have tires replaced several times and it ended up taking 3 every time). Also, I have had 3 vehicles in for alignments and every time the steering wheel was not set straight afterwards. The last straw for me was when I was getting a set of tires installed and they broke off one of the wheels studs on my vehicle and then charged me to fix it. read more

You must insist on a written estimate to keep things honest and legal here. Alex has a preferred tendency to give you the good old friend, low ball verbal estimate, when you come in. When you come back to settle up for the repairs, there are always unauthorized extended repairs, or hard to believe hours of labor, that took what was a $100 estimate to a $400 final bill. When questioned on the final bill, Alex often claims the technician who worked on the car figured the final charges, and he, Alex, never looked over the final bill.
