My introduction to this great business was a few years back. I was traveling by boat and the first stop on the trip was nearby in Westbrook. I had a serious mishap with my bike and needed some fairly significant repairs. I was leaving the following day and was in a tough spot. Action came through and my bike was fixed the next day! After my 49 year old bike fell over it needed some attention. I stopped at Action Sports in Old Saybrook and I left it for repair. Two hours later I received a call that my bike was ready. I couldn't believe it! I made a test run around area streets and everything was perfect. I have ridden the bike all week-end and it feels brand new! DO NOT GO TO ACTION SPORTS IN OLD SAYBROOK! This was hands down the worst customer service experience I've ever endured. All I needed was a simple adjustment to my ski boots and bindings--but instead, I was met with outright hostility and unprofessionalism. The man working the counter (whose stench alone was enough to make anyone nauseous--he reeked of skunk or some other disgusting smoky residue) didn't even give me the chance to fully take my ski boots out of the bag before he aggressively snapped at me. With glazed-over eyes and an attitude completely unfit for customer service, he barked, "Absolutely not, we can't help you here! Your bindings will not be worked on!" No explanation. No attempt to assist. Just rudeness, condescension, and public humiliation in front of everyone present. His coworkers didn't intervene, and I was left standing there wondering why I was being treated like garbage for no apparent reason. To top it all off, I left feeling completely disrespected and had to take my business elsewhere. Thankfully, the Action Sports in Branford, CT, was a breath of fresh air--they were professional, helpful, and resolved my issue with zero drama. I'll happily leave them a glowing 5-star review. But this Old Saybrook location? Avoid it like the plague. They don't deserve your business, and whoever hired this individual seriously needs to reevaluate their standards. Went in with my daughter this morning to buy her skis, gear, and bindings today. I waited for 20 minutes could not find one staff member to help me even though multiple workers walked by us and ignored us. Waited patiently for a man to finish up with a customer only to have someone walk in the front door with their snowboard and receive immediate attention. Perhaps because we are two females, either way we left with no gear and not one word from an employee. Unfortunate since we live in town and tried to support local small business. read more

Spent a good part of the summer searching for a kayak rack. My friend and I "wandered" in the other day. Shelby did some searching and found the rack I wanted. Bought the crossbars from the Toyota dealer and brought them over. Shelby spent a lot of time installing both the crossbars and rack. She's AWESOME! read more

The salesperson's mask fell off his face repeatedly. He was wearing some sort of plaid rag as a kind of "bandana" mask, and it kept slipping off his nose, and then his mouth. It was sort of comical. Except that I was there with my 75-year-old father-in-law. I pointed out to him that while he was talking to my elderly father-in-law he should be wearing a mask over his mouth and nose. He told me to "calm down." This was a genuinely upsetting customer service experience, and I can't imagine visiting this shop again. read more

This is my second time utilizing action sports in 2 years. My first experience was for an equipment tuneup that was satisfactory and therefore I returned today to have a pair of 6 year old skis refitted to my new boots which are a larger size. This time I couldn't have felt less wanted in the store, which was completely customer free on my arrival. The sales associate asked me what I needed and I explained my situation. Without offering explanation he spent the next five minutes looking through a binder with regard to my skis only to matter of factly state your skis no longer offer a warranty and therefore we cannot help you. When I asked him to explain he expressed zero enthusiasm and basically told me the company doesn't offer warranty anymore and therefore he would not be helping me. There was no attempt to offer me an alternative purchase solution. Simply sorry and then he more or less walked away. I live in Durham and made the 25 minute drive only to find such lackluster customer service with no alternative resolution so infuriating that I had to write this review. I am normally someone who only writes exceptional reviews as I realize their importance for business, however perhaps it's time this establishment takes some stock in its customers or truly shut its doors for good. (I am terribly sorry this review was meant for the branford location I am now unable to alter it. I wish I could modify this for the branford location as I did not visit the Old Saybrook Location) read more

First time renting equipment for our three kids to ski! My husband used to be a ski instructor at Okemo and he has been dying to take them. Finally with a break in our hockey schedule due to covid we decided it's time to learn how to ski. Nick at old saybrook action sports made the process so smooth from the minute my husband called on the phone to walking out the door! It was worth the ride from Northford. We purchased bicycles at this shop, and we love our bikes! When we bought our bikes we were told that bicycle tune-ups would be free for the lifetimes of our bicycles. THAT is a nice feature! Our past bicycles, which we bought at a well-known sporting goods store, were always getting flat tires and having problems. Our new bikes from Action Sports are very dependable. I was also impressed that they let you take "test drives" on bicycles until you find the one that feels best for you. Good store, good service, good prices! We are happy customers. read more

Second year in a row they failed to deliver on promised pick up date for needed tune up for ski trip. Again, PROMISED pu date.

This is by far the worst ski and sports rental place that I visited. The staff have no knowledge of what they are doing and when you confront them, they are unable to look at you. We signed up for their 'ski and swap' program for my two kids. They measured and 'fit' the ski boots on my children. However after one ski trip the boots no longer fit my son. After going back to the store, they incorrectly measured my sons foot (or it grew 2 FULL sizes in 2 1/2 months) I asked if there was anything they could do for me. NO!! was there only answer. I had two options, bring the boots back next year and try and sell them back or rent another pair of used boots from them (for additional daily cost!!) Zero of exchanging or discounting another pair. I had already gone to a mountain and paid full prices for another rental- because my son could not fit into the boots- and was hoping they would do something... They have additional used boots (they wanted me to rent them.) but zero discount, zero service, zero help. I mentioned that if I rented from ANY mountain, I would simply get the next (sorry TWO) sizes up and be a happy camper- no questions asked. They would had a repeat customer for the next 5 plus years (my kids are 9 and 11) and was planning on buying myself a pair of skis. But never again will I buy anything from this store. I cancelled the remaining rentals I had and left the store and now looking to find a second pair of ski boots. Very frustrating and disappointing. I tried to help out the 'local' guy and got screwed instead. read more

These folks are wonderful! We were staying at a nearby B&B and needed bikes - Old Saybrook is very bike-friendly. We went there to rent bicycles and the girl who took our order was very friendly and helpful. The man delivered our bicycles and picked them up two days later. Of course there was a fee for delivery and pick up, but it was well worth it. The bikes we were lent were in very good shape, not at all what I expected for rented bicycles. Would highly recommend Action Sports! read more

Expect a long wait. I think they are too understaffed. Most times I will be standing around for about 15-20 minutes before anyone even acknowledges my presence. And on two occasions I've left after waiting as long as I could and the staff seems completely oblivious to losing business. I can be patient but at least say "hi I'll be right with you." Otherwise they seem to have a good selection and decent prices. read more

*Update: A week or so after posting the below review, I was contacted by the Manager of the shop. We had a good discussion about what had happened, and how we thought it could have been avoided - essentially, poor communication was my main point. While his apology and concern doesn't change what happened, I can greatly appreciate that he reached out to understand the problem from the customer's perspective, and in turn make an effort to improve customer service with his team. ***************** Gotten decent end of the season deals on snowboard gear here, but that's where the positives end. I have gone back to them twice: 1) a board tune 2) edge dent repair. 1) Dropped my board off for an edge tune, which was interpreted as only shaving the sides of the rails, not the base surface of the rails. Went to pick up the board after about 4 days and noticed they didn't sharpen the edges along the base. "Yeah we thought that was weird too" was the explanation I got from the reps at the shop. Not a "oh sorry, must have been a misunderstanding" or anything like that. So had to leave it there another couple of days for them to finish the tune I thought I was getting. Simple phone call to say "are you sure this is what you wanted" would have saved me the trip and saved them the extra work and disappointed customer. 2) Got a pretty good rail dent in the glades one Saturday. So would need to excavate the base, hammer the rail back into place, lay some ptex and seal the deck. I love this board enough that I wanted to pay to have it professionally done and looking right. Bring the board in on Sunday and the repair guy isn't there so I ask "please call me tomorrow to let me know what you'll do and how much it'll cost." End of Monday comes, no call so I give them a ring. "Board's done!" To me, that's a surprisingly quick turnaround for something more than a basic edge tune. The repair looked like it was done in 3 minutes with no regards for finished quality. Filled the base excavation w black ptex even though the base is entirely white. Did not bother to repair or replace the dented edge, instead just removed that 3" section of rail all together. And did not seal the top deck, just left the exposed internals from the original damage. So it's still not watertight and snow-worthy at this point. And I now have this terribly ugly eyesore on my board, and a portion of edge made of squared ptex, not steel. Didn't want to argue there with the cashier who had no involvement in the repair, just wanted to get my board away from any of their tools at that point. Another case where a phone call to talk about the repair options could have prevented a frustrated customer. read more

Be careful. Once you buy something from this store you are pretty much on your own. I purchased an $800 bike in April and one of the tubes popped only three weeks from the purchase date. I put a new tube on and rode the bike to the store. The owner Dave looked at it and given the flat occurred on the inside of the rim said it was 'weird'. I asked if there is such a thing as a faulty tube to which he said no. He would not offer a free tube or an examination of the bike rim. Two days later another tube popped. I called and the advice i received was fix it on my own and 'hope for the best'. The rest of the staff seemed great but the owner just seems to be unhappy. read more

I purchased a Kettler Trike from an on-line retailer for my Granddaughter because I was not able to find it locally and wanted this particular trike because she uses this one during her physical therapy. I was having difficulty assembling the trike and stopped into the Old Saybrook location and was warmly greeted by Dave. He quickly figured out my issue and fixed the trike right away. My Granddaughter was very pleased to try out her brand new trike and I am so grateful for Dave's friendly and expert assistance. read more
