Robert Marinucci is the one you want if you're looking for quality work, an eye for detail, and a passion for customer satisfaction. He succeeded where others would have failed: remodeling a 1960s condo during the Covid-19 lockdown! In August of 2019, I couldn't believe the trouble I had getting contractors to submit bids after the initial "meet up"! I felt like a bad date! Jobs must have been plentiful; apparently every contractor had enough to do. This was no small job, but it wasn't enormous either - full kitchen, tile flooring, doors and windows, paint, and two bathrooms, probably 3-5 weeks in all. Then, the only problem I could foresee was asbestos removal and a persnickety association. By late October, I had contracted someone to do just the doors and windows, but the rest of the job continued to wait for the perfect match. Finally, a sympathetic friend referred me to Robert Marinucci (housewizard@hotmail.com) and I checked out a home he was almost finished with. It was spectacular. I mean, the color combinations, the bathrooms, the flooring, cabinetry and lighting all harmonized, instilling a sense of welcome and calm. He opened narrow areas in the home making them flow easily together, and revealed a talent for improving and modernizing spaces that went beyond the many standard jobs I'd seen. Robert is an inspired craftsman and his workers, especially Miguel, contribute their best efforts accordingly. My only fear was he'd be out of my price range! When I finally did sit down with him and expressed my wishes for an attractive, but affordable remodel, he made a thorough and detailed estimate. It was within my budget, so we set to work. The plan was to pull permits right around the New Year, start work in early February, and be done by early March. Experienced with the HOA's curious and contradictory ways, Robert was prepared for most surprises, but there were more to come (hint: asbestos, architects and a VIRUS!). Thankfully, the HOUSE WIZARD handled them all with grace and transparency, keeping me abreast of every step, snag and redirection. The job took a lot longer than any of us had anticipated; what started in February wasn't completed until early May, thanks mainly to COVID-19 causing inspection delays, long lines, elevated pricing and uncertain deliveries. Mom stayed with her friend during the lockdown, nobody got sick, and the result is fantastic. Here are some highlights of our adventure. The U-shaped kitchen: Robert put a cabinet-depth refrigerator in a space that used to be a pantry closet, a double wall oven where the old refrigerator blocked traffic, and replaced the range with an induction cooktop. He installed a gorgeous granite countertop and a creamy mosaic backsplash that just sings. His wonderful electrician removed the entire soffit and fluorescent lights, raised the ceiling four inches, and added recessed fixtures. Early in the project, I said I wanted it bright enough to land an aircraft in it. The room seems even big enough to land an aircraft in it! Shopping: His advice and support in decision-making was impeccable, assisting us in the selection of fixtures, stone, tile, and mouldings, offering insight, tactful recommendations, and even return trips, as if he had all the time in the world. When I was unable to join them, Robert picked up my mom in his truck to go select cabinetry, drawer pulls and vanities. If our indecision and ignorance vexed him, it didn't show a bit. Bathrooms: Robert was fearless in moving heaven and earth to get things just right. In this case, he replumbed the toilet over about six inches to allow more space between it and the vanity cabinets. He selected a wonderful corner shower with curved glass doors. When the paint we selected didn't look good, he repainted with a different shade until it was perfect! Aesthetics and extras: Every job comes with surprises and new opportunities. The interior doors looked shabby now that the walls were being painted and the rooms looked so spiffy. I laughed at the irony when I was once considering keeping the original cabinetry and just putting new countertop material on it. He talked me out of that too. With a good price on doors, Miguel had them in two days later. I had forgotten about one other fixture to change and he didn't make a big deal about adding it. He installed things my mom needed, changed wonky plugs, shifted things around as the rooms were finished, and even helped hang the pictures. He accommodated our every need, and did it cheerfully with an eye for the end result. I cannot include every little thing Robert Marinucci, the true HOUSE WIZARD, did to make our old condo look so fresh and welcoming and calming, so I'll stop here.

We picked all finishes with Rob's guidance and contractor prices. We were so happy with the quality of his work we had him remodel a bathroom,powder room, wet bar,and built-in TV area. He designed and built beautiful custom doors for the last 2 areas. Rob and his helper worked every weekday of the 2 1/2 month project. All work was completed on a timely basis. Rob was always available to discuss a question or concern. I loved that he only does 1 project at a time! We still have a master bath left to be done. He is the only one I will consider for the job! I found him to be manipulative and unprofessional and, in my opinion, took advantage of my difficult personal circumstances. In Dec 2017, just weeks after losing my mom and sister and months after moving into my beautiful new home, I discovered a water leak that caused significant damage to my kitchen and multiple rooms. I initiated a claim with my insurance company, and began gathering quotes from three separate contractors -- one of whom was Darryl Huie. His initial demeanor was overly eager and persistent. Despite not being awarded the project, he repeatedly inserted himself into the process, including contacting my insurance adjuster without my consent, showing up to my property unannounced, and calling, emailing, and texting me constantly. I was grieving, overwhelmed, and traveling frequently for work and trying to get my family affairs in order, so I allowed limited access to my home strictly for estimation purposes. Not for any actual work. Darryl claimed that even if I didn't move forward with certain repairs, I was still obligated to pay him the entire labor amount my insurance company had awarded, even for work he wasn't doing. He warned me that I could be reported for insurance fraud if I didn't hand over all the funds to a licensed contractor (i.e., him). In my opinion, he used my inexperience with the insurance process to pressure and intimidate me, which I now see as taking advantage of my vulnerable situation. When I declined to move forward, he entered my home without permission while I was traveling and removed the granite countertop, then claimed it broke due to a "preexisting condition" which would have to be filed under a second claim. He later attempted to manipulate the situation by suggesting he could help get it covered under the initial claim if I gave him the job. I considered this a serious ethical violation and reported it to my insurer. When I returned home, I found my road bike missing from the garage and the broken granite left behind. I then received a $1,200 invoice for "services" for removal of the granite countertop, which I never approved. He eventually sued me in small claims court, falsely asserting we had a verbal agreement. Fortunately, I documented everything, and the judge dismissed the case. Years later, he resurfaced and sent me a disturbing message through Facebook filled with personal attacks, prompting me to finally share this experience. At the time, I didn't have the energy to speak up. I do now. After writing an honest review on Yelp, a man claiming to be his "friend, who happens to be a lawyer," began calling me at work, emailing my personal and work emails. I consider this behavior to be harassing, and I want no further contact. If you are considering working with this contractor, I strongly urge you to proceed with caution. This review is based entirely on my personal experience and supported by court records, insurance documentation, and extensive written communication.

Eventually we had two more leaks and I posted again where he commented. I remembered that he told me did drywall the last time and this time we needed a large amount of drywall to fix the damage from the leak. I legitimately have no extra money and he was willing to work with me to pay with credit card and definitely tried to give us a good deal. He ended up doing the drywall, finding a another leak and repairing the cause, installing a new toilet, and tiling the upstairs bathroom. He got this all done in a two week span. I am really happy with the work done especially with the budget we didn't really even have. On another note, I didn't read the reviews until after I had already placed half my deposit and I got super nervous and immediately contacted Nick. He was able to ease my nerves, provide an explanation when he didn't owe one to me, and showed me he was accountable and had good intentions. He is a kind and respectful man that kept his word. Work started on April 25, 2022 and was supposed to take an estimated 5 days and $9,500. He was paid $4,750 by us, $1475 by our eastern border neighbor, and $1,500 by our southern border neighbor. I thankfully stopped the northern neighbor from paying his portion, and stopped our southern border neighbor from paying the rest of his portion. So he received: · $4,750 + $1,475 + $1,500= $7725 or · 81% of the agreed upon $9,500 for the job We are completely unhappy with the way this business has been executed for the following reasons: · He received 81% of the money and only completed a little over 30% of the job. · He told us that he'd already SPENT the money received and yet SO LITTLE of our job has been done which leads us to believe that he spent that money elsewhere. Also, he refuses to provide receipts for materials or payroll to show us where the money has gone. · The job had been estimated to take 5 days and it has now been going on 7 weeks. · He and his team only work an average of 1.5-3 hours any given day instead of working full days quickly and efficiently to get the job done. · He has had 2 family emergencies, 1 wedding, 4 sick days, and 9 days of no work without an excuse. Only ONCE did he inform us that he wouldn't be working that day. Every other time I had to contact him to ask what was going on. His working hours are terribly few and inconvenient as they drag the job out. · There is a strong lack of communication with us residents when problems arise-once regarding property lines and irrigation, and another time with regards to the removal of palm tree roots. Both issues could have been discussed in detail beforehand and NOT caused severe delays in work. · Our eastern neighbors were displeased by the untidiness of your work and the mess that was left behind, and we tend to agree. Once the back hill fence on the eastern side was "completed," you left the irrigation out of place, trampled plants, and a massive amount of dirt covering the landscaping on our side. It will take us many hours to clean up the mess and erosion caused by your work. We have already spent upwards of 3 hours as a family of 2 adults and 3 tween kids shoveling, raking, and hauling dirt, debris, roots, and other leftover junk that should have been disposed of per the contract. It will take us many more hours to clean it up and get the hill back in serviceable condition. · We will sue him in small claims court and issue a complaint with the CONTRACTOR'S STATE LICENSE BOARD who can issue fines up to $5,000 (It is illegal for an unlicensed person to perform contracting work on any project valued at $500 or more in combined labor and material costs).
