Once I landed downstairs I was treated to a wonderfully simple yet mouth watering menu. First time there I had sausage and sauerkraut and Flaczki which I hadn't had since my mother made it last time in 1982 what a treat! The sausage... never in all the years of eating all manor of sausage did I experience anything so tasty! The meal was served up by three delightful experienced ladies and in conversation with them I discovered that one of these ladies once babysat a girl I went out with years ago. The owner (I believe she is the owner) greeted us and told us we could sit anywhere. She brought us water and menus. My sister and I ordered 2 cabbage rolls, Potato and Cheese Pierogies, Meat Pierogies with bacon and onions to share. For my son, we tried ordering the schnitzel sandwich, but was told that was unavailable. My son doesn't eat mashed potatoes so I asked if I could just order him a schnitzel and she said yes. The food came out in about 15 minutes. The cabbage rolls were fantastic, the perfect amount of acidity in the sauce. I really don't like tomatoes or cabbage, but there is something special about the cabbage rolls. I ate very bit of mine. The pierogies were wonderful. I usually prefer just potato and cheese, but honestly between those and the meat, I couldn't decide which I liked more. Both were flavorful especially with the sauteed onions and sour cream. My son's schnitzel was huge! He could only eat about half of it and when my son asked for ketchup (much to my dismay) the owner was very nice about it and commented that's the way her daughter likes it too. Honestly the food was absolutely wonderful and the service was great. It was very similar to what I had in Poland. If this restaurant was closer to my home I would visit often. We had no issue with parking. We were able to get a spot on the street right in front of the restaurant. Parking was also not too expensive since you aren't in the downtown area. If you are in the area and want a wonderful meal, be sure to visit.

Oh wait, we're not here for the comfort food, we're here for the deli sandwiches. For bread options, there was white, whole wheat, Kaiser roll, cheese or onion bun. I went with the onion bun and I'm glad I did. My Black Forest Ham sandwich ($5) was piled high with some pickles on the side. The bun was super fresh and ham was DELICIOUS. I've seen many people drop in for lunch and I'm glad I did. I'm a huge fan of Ann's and I hope you will be too.

Stephania's Pierogies offers at least a dozen flavours - BOTH savoury and sweet! A bag of approx. 2 dozen pierogies is $6. The Polish lady who was working there was proud to say that they use real cheese, no jams are in the sweet dumplings, just crushed fruits. On my way out, another Polish customer was walking in, so that definitely added to the authenticity! Pierogies were really good! Much better than the run-of-the-mill pierogies available at your grocer's freezer. Starsky's carries these pierogies for $6.99, so it's slightly cheaper at the "outlet". Will stop by again and maybe try the sweet ones? They sort of freak me out tho.

Even the generic potato, cheese, and bacon pierogies which are common throughout Canada are taken to the next level by Stephania's. Good price and the women are always nice. Worth the stop, stock your freezer with a few bags and have European comfort food on your table in 15 minutes. I like to serve savoury ones with caramelised onion, bacon, and sour cream but good enough to enjoy plain or with butter. I serve sweet ones with powdered sugar and a sweet sour cream and cream cheese topping. I even bring these when I visit my grandmother in America and it's a nostalgic experience like she and her mother used to make. Cash Only!

We tried:…read more - Clear barszcz with mushroom dumplings: this was my first time trying borscht and this was thankfully unchallenging while still being interesting. Loved the dill. - Bigos: my friend ordered this. Was really flavourful but I did not see any mushrooms in contrast to the menu description. - Mushroom golabki: fell apart easily and was hard to eat with gravy but all the constituent parts were tasty. - Sauerkraut & mushroom pierogi: dominated by the (delicious) sauerkraut and incredibly buttery (butterily incredible?). - Side salad combo: enough for two to share. Beets and sauerkraut were astonishingly delicious and coleslaw was quite good too. Carrots were bland. - Excellent complimentary(?) bread. A note on portion sizes - as a small man with an average appetite I thought the soup + one cabbage roll + side (i.e. 4) pierogis + side salad was manageable and enjoyable, but I think I would have been defeated if I had tried to have the soup with a standard entree of two cabbage rolls. Service was a bit rushed and servers seemed in a bit of a hurry to clear dishes before we were done, and it was impossible to reach the restaurant on the phone to modify our reservation, but we did visit on a busy Saturday evening.

I got the platter for two (28$) which came with 4 perogies, 2 salads, 1 choice of chicken or pork schnitzel, hunter bigos stew, sour cream, and some kind of onion au jus. Also separately ordered two pork rice cabbage rolls and the warm barszcz borscht soup with wontons (chose the mushroom filling). My partner got the roast beef plate which had the option of subbing for perogies, so we were able to try four flavours between the two of us. The cabbage rolls were soft, tender, and comforting. Tasted like they were homemade with care, with the tomato sauce being the only thing that was processed. I could see how this may become bland for those looking for bursting flavour, but for me, having dined out so very frequently in the last few weeks, that was just what I needed as a relaxing meal. For the perogies, my filling preferences from best to worst are: minced pork, cottage cheese & potato, sauerkraut and mushrooms, cheddar & potato. Likely wouldn't order perogies again though because the mushy outer dough just reminds me of chinese dumplings and i kept getting confused after each bite revealed equally soggy fillings. The chicken schnitzel dipped into the onion au jus was just lovely. The fattiness of the jus complemented the lean chicken cutlet and gave it an earthy umami coat of flavour. Very nice. The occasional two bites of roast beef had me feeling like I was Violet at the Willy Wonka Factory. The more I chewed, the juicier it got. I pronounced out aloud in wonder of this sentiment actually, "mmm, that is definitely roast beef!". The borscht soup was...interesting. I think the dill was too overpowering and threw me off while trying to taste the delicate beet flavour that was supposed to be the main character. Mushroom wontons were too 'cremini concentrated' for me. Also got the kompot, which is just boiled fruit water with little to no sugar added. I had it cold, with two cubes of cooked pear floating about. It was a great fruity beverage to cleanse my palate of the dense carb-heavy meal. At my return visit, I will make a custom order for 1 cabbage roll, 1 chicken schnitzel, 1 side of coleslaw, 1 slice of roast beef, and 1 glass of kompot.
