I've been a member for about half a year, and the group continues to grow on me -- the people are friendly, both young and old; the music is great; and the performance opportunities are stellar. This location is only a rehearsal hall right now, but there are plans in the works to make it a legitimate performance venue. I estimate it'd take about 5-10 years for this to happen. The ensemble is run by a trio of the most hardworking, dedicated folks I've met in St. Louis this far, and presided over (by the baton) by Edward Dolbashian, a professor of music at the University of Missouri. The band plays many concerts over the course of the year. I've just had the opportunity to experience one, a holiday spectacular performed at Powell Hall, home of the St. Louis Symphony. For this concert, we invited Cameron Carpenter, a world-renowned organist, to be our guest star for the evening; his virtuoso skills mesmerized the crowd. If you're looking to dust off that old horn and get back into music, or are looking to increase your range of performance opportunities and enjoy professional instruction, the Compton Heights Concert Band is the place to look.

Yes I was aware that this was on the campus of UMSL, and it would be somewhat tricky to find but everything worked out in the end. It's not so often they have mainstream artists perform there, but I got to see music legend Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass at the Touhill. The place seemed kind of dated, like stuck in the 1960s (which ironically fit the vibe) as in the design, the wooded walls and the old cushioned seats. But there was really nothing to complain about overall. I definitely can't complain about the free parking, which is rare! This is also not too far from a Metrolink station, but seriously who wants to ride the Metrolink?!

We were looking for something to do on a Sunday evening, the weather was perfect for outdoors, and this popped up. We decided to pack ourselves a picnic and head over, we figured if it was a dud, we would just leave early. But it was SO cool. Seeing a free show, in the middle of the park, with a cheese board in front of you, and a bottle of wine in your water bottle? This is the St. Louis I love. We will absolutely be back every year to support this. Maybe even a few times per season. It's such a unique, and fun experience.

Food was good, it was from Steve's Hot Dogs and the Fountain on Locust but so maaaanyy patrons brought in their own meals and bottles of wine (so cute) A teenage, abridged version of the Tempest was showing by the food stands before the show - very cute! It gets pretty packed in the afternoon and traffic gets backed up in the area. The local restaurants and shops are open alongside the festival. Lots of Mexican food vendors (also funnel cakes), beer and margarita stands and merchandise vendor (like sombreros and $5 sunglasses). There's also a "Kid" Klaw game (giant life size claw machine) that cost $5-$10, 3 music stages, a roller skating rink, wrestling ring, and mechanical bull ride. The announcer was lively, entertaining, and informative. He shared how this is the only circus school in St Louis and is also the only social circus school. They offer classes to kids of all ages, with their oldest student being of 93 years currently. The show was fantastic! The performers whom I saw tonight were in level 1.5. They've just finished their 15-week fall semester (Dec) and were showcasing their skills. It was great to see the teachers/mentors, helping the students, providing balance aid, and spotting. I look forward to returning to see if I recognize any performers in the future. Donations are welcome and go towards helping students.
