It is hard to find affordable Ethiopian food in NYC. So, will walking in Washington Heights, we notice this restaurant we needed to try. Food: 5/5 I attempted to be healthy and get the vegetarian platter. My partner humored me along as long as he could have something with meat on the side. It was great, either way! Feeding two of us under $80 is major accomplishment! Service: 5/5 Everyone was super nice and patient! My partner and I worked had many questions since I have food restrictions, but they were very understanding! It was a great vibe. All on all, I would definitely go back for some good Ethiopian food. I hope to bring more people so we can have full table next time!

Ethiopian restaurant in my neighborhood?!?! You bet I'm going! (Sadly, I have moved away and this is no longer an easy local place to eat, but very glad I was able to get out and try it.) My visit was in late September, while they were just getting started. We ordered 2 meat dishes and a veggie combo platter. Portions of the veggies were ample, but the meat portions seemed on the smaller side. My husband (who admittedly was quite hungry) almost finished off both meat entrees. The flavors were delicious (but a little bit muted), and I enjoyed the variety of flavors and textures of every dish we had. The service was friendly and prompt. We did ask for our foods on separate platters, so the meat and veggies would be separate, and it arrived on the same platter. The restaurant was very clean, but had ethiopian artwork and felt exotic yet practical. No mesob or carpets here.

What a lovely affordable Ethiopian spot in Washington heights! I went as soon as it opened on a Sunday afternoon with a friend, and the staff were immediately so kind and attentive. We ordered a vegetarian combo to split, and that (combined with the endless injera) was enough for a lunch. The injera was top tier, nice and sour and fermenty, and all the dishes were well spiced. I had a great experience, and it was super affordable, so I would 10/10 definitely go again!

Meat combo + lamb

Absolutely love the food here and so glad it opened in the heights! We walked in for lunch on a Thurs around 12pm and we were the only customers, seated immediately. Ordered samusas + meat combo and lamb platters to share btwn 3 people, which left us all full. Everything comes with injera and they bring out more if you run out. All of it was super delicious and meat was very tender. We also ordered a tiramisu to share at the end which is made in-house - also pretty fire. Total after tax and tip ended up around $20/person which is very affordable for nyc!

Veggie sampler

I eat here at least every other week! I will go out of my way to have their veggie sampler which I think is the BEST IN NY. I think the meat is okay, just trust me order the veggie sampler. The service is always fast and the staff are super friendly me ambiance is casual but still nice enough for laid back date night. The injeria is perfectly tangy in a way that some NY Ethiopian places are. So grateful to have been introduced to Addey Ababa

Good music vibes

Beautiful vibe upon stepping in, great music, friendly and kind demeanor from host/server. Went for a light bite to share of a Vegetarian Combo and a Limonata San Pellegrino. Everything was flavorful and nicely balanced between textures, spice and mild, sour and sweet. A lovely warming meal. Definitely would come back for more!

Vegetarian combo and Ethiopian spiced tea

Truly, the best Ethiopian food I've ever had (including all my favorite spots in DC). The flavors were perfect and just spicy enough (and I love spice!). The staff was incredibly kind and suggested I sit in the warmest spot under the heater, since I was clearly very cold after coming in from frigid temps. Such a charming spot and I can't stop thinking about the vegetarian combo with the Ethiopian spiced tea...! 11/10 recommend

Doro Wot + Founder's Lager

Delicious. If you want spices, they have spices. As a meat eater, the vegetarian options are also delic'. It looks somewhat fancy from the outside, but is quite casual and welcoming. The staff are all smiles. This is my second visit. Support diverse cuisine in your neighborhood!

Doro wat, awaze tibs, shiro wot, Kik alicha wat, misir wat, fosolia.

This is a most welcome addition to the Heights. Split a few dishes with a friend. The awaze tibs and doro wat were both very flavorful. The complexity of the berbere really shines with the chicken. The vegetarian dishes were also on point. We had kik alicha wot, misir wot and shiro wot - all tasty. They are also not stingy with the injera. Very friendly people, and I look forward to returning. Finally, a great restaurant in this location on 181st!

We shared everything and tried both the Meat and Vegetarian combinations. Each vegetarian combo came with three veggie dishes. For the meats, we got Ye Siga Alicha Wot (stewed beef with sauce) and Doro Wot (chicken legs with berbere). Personally, I preferred the beef--it was very flavorful and tender. For the veggie choices, we had: Fasolia: Sautéed string beans and carrots Shiro Wot: Chickpea sauce Yemisir Wot: Red lentil stew--one of my favorites Ater Kik Alicha: Cooked split peas, very tasty Yatakilt Alicha: Cabbage, carrots, and potatoes Key Sir: Red beets, carrots, and potatoes--another favorite The portions were really generous, and everything came with injera, their spongy sourdough flatbread made from teff flour. The bread was a nice balance and paired perfectly with all the food. The service was great--friendly and attentive without rushing us out, so you can relax and hang out after your meal. It was also really fun to eat with my hands, which added to the authentic experience. The food tasted so good and genuine. Bonus points: the restaurant is close to public transport, and they accept both cash and card. Overall, I give this place a 10/10. Highly recommended!

Portion sizes large but what's positive is no one in the restaurant will judge you for hand eating given there is a mutual understanding of the quality of each dish. I would highly recommend the honey wine which pairs perfectly with the Doro Wat poultry dish.

I chose the misir wor (red lentils), shiro (ground chickpeas), gomen (collard greens), tofu tibs, and cabbage carrot dish. The mixture was a good blend of heartier lentils with fresher greens. Each dish had a unique flavor even though they use similar spices. My favorites were the shiro and the tofu tibs. The gomen felt undercooked and could have used more flavor. The portion felt adequate for one person. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes. I liked the flavors and the casual ambiance

I was excited to try this place despite the trek but was sadly disappointed. Definitely not as good…read moreas my go-to Ethiopian spots (like Abyssinia), or even as the mediocre spots in midtown (like Queen of Sheba and Meskerem). Everything tasted a little drier than usual. Also it's vegan so you won't get your usual meat options. The wine was also disappointing though to be fair I didn't expect too much. Finally, reservations are a pain to make - no one answers the phone or responds to emails and you can't make them online. Fortunately it turns out you don't need one (the place was empty when we arrived for a 12:30pm lunch on a summer Friday). Sadly won't be returning.

You can bring a big or small group and it makes for an enjoyable experience. You could also have date night here as they have some really nice corner tables that feel intimate. Food: the food felt very authentic and seemed to match the flavor palate of Ethiopian food. Some of the food can be on the spicy side but I love spicy food so I really enjoyed it. The portions are good sized and as much as you want to order everything on the menu it's just not possible unless you have a bit group. My favorite dish was the nachos. I loved the spongy fried chips with all the nachos ingredients. The chips are also thick so they can hold more. The tangy flavor went really well with the nacho cheese and beans. The bowls are also really amazing. All the seasonings were on point. Price: we got big portions so I feel the prices of the dishes were reasonable. Service: they were all very friendly and helped answer our questions if we were unfamiliar with something. Food came out quickly and on time.
