We had the Awash special, which included kitfo and tibs, both staples of any Ethiopian meal. Between the injera, each meat dish, and the accompanying veggies (lentils, greens, beets), the meal was packed full of flavor. At a fixed $50 for two, it was a great deal for a filling dinner. They also have unique drinks, including honey wine and a few different cocktails, although we didn't try any this time around. The space leaves a little something to be desired, it's a bit dated in terms of furniture and decor. Avoid the bathroom, it doesn't have any ventilation. Hadn't had Ethiopian food in a minute and decided to check out this location. It's in a beautiful part of the UWS and within walking distance of Central Park. I ordered a combination platter with Doro Wat and 4 different vegetables. The food came out about 15 minutes later. Everything was delicious, would have preferred the chicken a bit spicier. The chicken leg was not fully cooked and meat next to bone had some red blood still. Injera was fluffy and sour but arrived cold. Overall good experience beautiful interior. I would give Awash a solid 3.5-4 stars. I am leaning more on the 3 stars now because we are still currently trying to deal with the weird divide of the check. But lemme back track: I made a reservation for 6 people. Me and a friend were the first ones there, and the only ones there when it opened. During the four hours that we were at Awash, maybe only four parties entered the restaurant. Being that this was a holiday weekend, the service from transit is, of course, horrendous. Regardless, the staff was lovely and accommodating to us in the beginning as the rest of us wandered in. We didn't order until may be about an hour or so into opening and I do appreciate the staff for being patient with us. One thing that I do want to bring attention to is that there were some concerns we collectively started to notice as we observe the restaurant. For one, while the decorations for the restaurant were absolutely beautiful, there were two lamps, one in particular that was in the center of the ceiling, that had a huge swarm of flies gathering around underneath it. These flies occasionally would wander off into different areas... they didn't really bother us in particular, but I would want to know why there was a huge collection of them underneath one lamp. One of the waitresses even swatted away at them. So this was an apparent problem that even the staff recognized. :/ When everyone arrived, we finally ordered. I got the Awash Chicken, which I absolutely loved! It was a lot of first times for my friends who have not yet had Ethiopian food, and they enjoyed sharing with each other, using the Injera bread! It was so good and filling! I also had a bit of their Ethiopian coffee in the beginning, which was quite good! As we wrapped up our meal and asked for the check, I feel that's when the experience kind of tanked. As I had mentioned, I had made a reservation for six people. The vast majority of us wanted to use our cards to pay for the meal, hoping that they would split it for us. The staff at the time told us they could only except three cards max for a transaction, and could not divide the order... Unless I am completely missing this detail on their website, I'm surprised that a restaurant, which allows the capacity of people in a party to have that kind of option. Well, understanding that Ethiopian food can be a very communal experience, maybe that is why there is such a small number on the card limit... but we were still confused by what we all had to pay. Another thing that I wasn't crazy about was on our specific receipt, they listed an already applied the gratitude or tip into the total, but when they ask you to sign, they also ask if you would like to give even more tip. But not in an obvious way, way more confusing and tricky. The reason why we all came here was to celebrate my 30th birthday. Very overrated. I was very excited because I heard a lot of good things about Awash. I was in the neighborhood so my friends and I decided to visit. It took ages for the waitress to seat us and even longer for her to come and take our order. We ordered the meat sampler since that's what most reviews seemed to have recommended. I have to say, the meat was dry and bland. I've had a few Ethiopian food places in the city, and even in upstate New York(surprisingly my favorite so far). I was disappointed that this one wasn't flavorful, besides a few of the meat being extra salty. The inerja also wasn't that sour, it felt like we were just munching but weren't enjoying it. Our water was also not getting refilled. When it came time for the bill, the waitress was no where in sight and after I put my card down it took another 15+ min for us to waive down the waitress for them to take our bill. We had leftovers so we decided to pack them to go, the waitress said okay but never came back to us, my friend decided to go up to just get containers herself but was sent back. We were ultimately pretty frustrated and already running late to our next appointment so we decided to leave, which was finally when the waitress brought the bill. If that wasn't bad enough, today I noticed they charged themselves extra tip. For such terrible service, I can't believe Awash had the audacity to give themselves a higher tip than allocated. The food is decent, but it looks too white tablecloth here. Too neat, too pretty, and it looked scared to be eaten. It felt like I was eating eggshells. If the meal does not feel right, it will not taste right. After all, we eat with our eyes as much as we eat with our brains. As for the service, it leaves more to be desired. My server was pretty rude, especially when I asked for suggestions. I like to ask the servers what they think is good. Is it too much to give an honest opinion? You would have thought I asked her to marry me without even asking her on another date. I felt insulted. To add more insult to injury, I felt like an alien bug that had to be squashed immediately. When another customer came in that she knew, she was all jolly and friendly. To me, I was watched the entire time like I was under surveillance. Yes, I cheated a little to use a fork to eat some of this, but here? I do not care. The heck with it here. When she did come back to check on me, she asked me if I wanted more injera. I said sure, thinking it would be free. But no, this is Manhattan. I noticed when I received my bill they charged me extra for more. That is a crying shame. No where else since I started trying this cuisine has done this, and no one treated me like a second class citizen as I was treated here. I've had Ethiopian food in Philly and DC and loved it, so I was happy to see that NYC had its spots too. I was drawn to Awash in particular because its menu has customizable platters where you can choose the meats included and what size, since I think Ethiopian food is most fun when you get a giant platter to communally eat with your group. My friend and I came at peak dinnertime on Friday, but luckily there wasn't a wait and the servers seem to keep things moving. The inside of the restaurant is quite dim but nicely decorated with cool lamps, baskets, tablecloths, and a real candle at each table (watch out for it when you grab at your food!). We ordered an Awash combo for two that came with two generous servings of kitfo, special tibs (sauteed beef), lentils, collard greens, and beets. I found the tibs a bit tough and would get the other beef option next time, but the kitfo was DELICIOUS and I'm glad they gave such a large portion of it. Don't be afraid to try it because it's raw beef - it's kind of like the consistency of sushi spicy tuna, and amazingly buttery and seasoned. The platter is plenty of food for two and I'm happy to have leftovers for tomorrow. It takes a little while for the food to come out here, which was also the case at my favorite Ethiopian spot in Philly so maybe it's something to do with the cooking. We also had to flag down a server a couple times for water, which I needed since the food can get quite spicy. As for the tibbets, they were good. These had a pretty spicy tomato sauce and the injeera helped soak it up, making it much easier to eat it. It was really good food. I've been to Awash twice, and both times I got the Awash Special. If you eat beef, you NEED to get this dish simply because of the Special Kifto. It is this spicy beef tartare that is soooo addicting. I'll go around the platter and try every dish, but I always come back to the Special Kifto. It is seriously so good. Between my two meals at Awash (several months apart) I have noticed some slight discrepancies. The first time, I had a delicious cabbage dish on the platter and I was a little disappointed when it wasn't included on the platter on my second trip to Awash. Also, I was under the impression that injera refills were free, as they were the first time I went to Awash- however, the second time I went, when we asked for extra injera, the waitress (rather rudely) said we would have to pay extra. Usually, injera has been complimentary at every other Ethiopian restaurant I've been to. One additional note - I think the staff could be a little more liberal with the napkins, as Ethiopian food can get a little messy on the hands. Overall, though, amazing food! Terrible customer service. I ordered on GrubHub what I thought was a vegetarian meal. When it arrived it had meat and I don't eat meat. I called to get it fixed. Most restaurants will honor the mix up in orders, this should've been easy. I called and the lady who answered couldn't find my order. I ordered a beef, chicken, and vegetable combo as per usual and my mom ordered something similar but with lamb in it. We both also ordered only gluten-free bread and those were the only two orders we made that night. Of course, the food was great but it came in 45 minutes late and they only did one small side of the gluten-free bread and they gave a huge side of the bread with gluten in it which made absolutely no sense. Why would we want any of the bread with gluten in it if no one ordered it as a side or in general? We ended up throwing out the bread and sharing the small side because no one could eat it. It wasn't the best Ethiopian food I had, especially coming from Hawaii, they are legit way better Ethiopian foods on Oahu, but this is not the worst food. When it comes to their service, it was just nasty. I've noticed that they are kind to Caucasian customers. But they were very cold and unkind to me, and I was the only asian there that night. When I was ready to check out, they told me they don't accept discover cards. But I only brought that one credit card and didn't bring any cash. The waitress forced and escorted me to go to the grocery store next door to withdraw cash. And when she saw I was charged $1.99, she said: oh it's ok. Just $1.99. When we came back, I called their manager, and offered to have them cover the atm fee. But they did not cover it, and they demanded me for tips while lecturing me: if you use a discover card, you need to tell us in advance. Some of my best college food memories were of eating Ethiopian meals in DC with friends of all political stripes one summer. Liberal or conservative -- we all loved coming together over family style meals served over a huge round of injera, and eating with our fingers while debating topics as hot as our food. Ethiopian food is a bit harder to come by in NYC, but there are a few well-known bastions of the cuisine, including Awash, which seems to serve the real deal. They even offer gluten free, all-teff injera, which tastes far better than my homemade renditions made from the recipe on the side of my Bob's Red Mill bag of teff. It has a really unique flavor and texture that's unlike the softer, more springy wheat-based injera typically served in Ethiopian restaurants in the US. We recently tried the tibs wat and doro wat combo served with three vegetable dishes of your choosing. Between two of us, we were able to try all the vegetables dishes on offer. The tibs wat and doro wat packed some serious punch. Not everyone is going to like the dryish texture of the beef in the tibs wat, or the chicken in the doro wat, but in my experience, this seems to be how it's made everywhere. (It's very similar to Indonesian rendang.) Although we liked the stewed meat, to us the best part of the meal were the plant based dishes. Ater Kik Alicha (yellow split peas cooked in a mild stew and seasoned with onions and herbs) were a nice respite from the spicy heat of most other dishes. This dish was made with small chickpeas, clearly soaked and prepped in-house, and not from a can. They retained a substantial amount of texture. Misir Wat (split red lentil stew cooked in berbere) was excellent and the resemblance to certain Indian masoor dal dishes was uncanny. Again, lentils retained a good amount of texture. (These kinds of lentils are typically made a bit softer in Indian cuisine.) Shiro Wat (ground spiced chickpea and split pea stew, cooked with chopped tomatoes and onions) had a pretty similar flavor profile to the ater kik alicha, but was cooked to a slightly creamier consistency and was spicier. Atkilt Alicha (potatoes, carrots, and cabbages seasoned with herbs and spices in a mild stew) were tinged turmeric yellow. Enjoyable, not particularly exciting, but another nice option for cooling off your mouth in between bites of spicier things. Key Sir Alicha (beets and carrots cooked with onions and flavored with herbs and spices in a mild stew) were made with firm, sweet beets, probably prepped from fresh beets. (This is labor intensive, FYI.) Really a nice, light, low-key dish. Gomen (chopped collard greens sautéed with ginger, garlic, onions, and herbs) introduced some important green vegetable matter, but in all honestly, were a touch bland. I didn't get much of the ginger (or perhaps my mouth was too spiced out by this point to detect it). By itself, it needed more salt, but did act as a nice foil for the salty tibs and doro wats. We also tried the beef sambusas, which came three to an order. These are thick pastry rolls made out of phyllo (or phyllo-like pastry) and moderately filled with beef. Flavors and textures were reminiscent of Tunisian or Moroccan cigars / cigares, but far thicker, rolled chimichanga-sized. The food isn't particularly photogenic by delivery, so know that if you dine in at the restaurant, everything is presented beautifully, with neat little scoops of each dish placed on different parts of the injera. The soaked-through injera you get to eat at the end is fantastic. Someone on the delivery website we used called this food, "Gucci." I have to agree. All those labor-intensive preparations = very, very Gucci. read more

The fit-fit was overly spiced & oily. The rest of the food was ok - but it was better the last time I tried it.
