The prices were surprising, honestly, most entrees are above $30 (TALAPIA for $27.50?! ), which I don't mind spending if the food is stellar. Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato Salad was around $16 and the tomato was completely not ripe. Crunchy Tomato? The shrimp in garlic butter was kind of "fishy" and over cooked just swimming in oil. The paella was not REALLY PAELLA. I mean, it was saffron rice with seafood but this is a traditional dish, made in a paella dish and that was just not the case. Every ingredient was overcooked. I've always heard good things about this place and the first time I wanted to try what a bad experience. I wanted to make reservations and the guy placed me on hold for 5-7 mins got back on the phone and said "oh actually we are fully booked" I had a weird feeling so I asked my boyfriend to call and speak Spanish to the guy and he was able to get a reservation anytime! WAS I SHOCKED AND DISAPPOINTED! Just wanted to put it out there if you want to try this place out have someone who isn't speaking English and they will help you out! WHAT A DAM SHAME! This place is awesome! Came here for the first time with a friend during happy hour and was pleasantly surprised. The prices are veryyyy reasonable considering that the bar looks high-end and the bartenders are very accommodating. The bar was almost full during their happy hour and was casual dress. There were people in jeans and a t-shirt so don't worry about not looking your best. The next time I came here was during the Portuguese Festival (which is highly recommended as well) and sat outside. The server outside was swamped but managed to check-in every couple minutes. The outside seating is ideal for spring/summer/fall as you get to "people watch" and enjoy superb Portuguese food. I've tried the Camarao Jumbo em Molho Picante and Camarao Jumbo Recheado. The shrimp in these dishes were indeed "jumbo" and the sauce that was extremely good. Both came with sides like rice, vegetables, bread, and some others I can't recall. Extremely satisfying and the portions were huge! Definitely come in a try these dishes if you're craving shrimp. I haven't been to the "lounge" area of Adega, but have heard great things about it. Apparently, Adega has an attached building that they turn into a lounge/club in the night time, but I haven't been to that portion of the restaurant, so look elsewhere for reviews on that. Where do I begin? Hosted a party of 25 people (family and friends) following my daughter's law school graduation on May 20. Everything, from the ambiance and timely setup to the service and food, was superb! Our server (I wish I could remember his name) was attentive and accommodating. We never felt rushed, even on a busy Friday. The appetizers and food, served family style, was seasoned well, plentiful, and offered a great variety for the size of our crowd. And the Sangria was the best I've had in a while (red and white-- although my personal favorite was the red). I not from Newark so I and never experienced the restaurant, personally. I relied on the ratings and Marco, who was always responsive to my questions while planning from afar. He promised a nice party and Adega delivered and did not disappoint. I only gave them 3 stars because my friend and I (2 person table) only ordered drinks and we were automatically charged for the gratuity. This was the remaining part of my Newark adventure. We came here for the lounge next door. I give this place more like a 3 1/2 stars, because it was still pretty fun. I don't know if I would come here again, if not for another birthday party, but it was fun and nice inside nonetheless. The floor lights up like the disco days of the 70s, from red lights to blue lights etc. Its a narrow space, but not too narrow that you bump into people and have to push through. There are couches along the wall against blue fish tanks. Drinks are good, $8 for a cranberry vodka. The bartenders are dressed up like Catholic school girls which I didn't understand because of the disco floor, fish tank.. but the guys liked it, so it worked. Decent music - they played dance music. So i question what the hell did i eat here that resembled the food as such? poor representation... overly massive portions (which we were not allowed to share amongst the table) and shoddy ass service. when my mouth screams for seafood.. i expect freshness and of utmost quality. This is a review of the bar only. The bar has a separate door. We were here on a Friday night about 10ish. Packed! And it's extremely narrow. Made it challenging to find a spot for 4. Found one near the bathroom. But the narrowness provides for one person to be sitting and one person behind and so basically every time someone needed the 1 person stall it was a jostling dance. Had the cheesecake at the bar and a couple drinks. Drinks were good. Nice pour of vodka and beers were cold. Bartenders were very nice. Atmosphere very nice. But narrowness makes drinking here uncomfortable. The smelly Brazilian who sat next to us at the bar was also an added bonus. Dude take a shower after work if you want to pick somebody up. Adega is not so much a restaurant as it is a complex. Bar in the front, dance club to the right, restaurant splattered throughout. Like most of the Ironbound restaurants in the area, Adega's menu is dense and reflective of many of the dishes of the Iberian peninsula. There's a wide variety of entrees from shrimp to steak and even a vegetarian option nestled in there ... somewhere. Unfortunately, the food is hit-or-miss. Most of my experiences have found the meats to be overcooked and dry, seafood is smothered with too much oil, the rice is generally bland and the vegetables are woody. Maybe I've only been there on off nights, but it's been pretty consistently below average every time I've been there. That being said, some of the appetizers are pretty good, and they manage to get the scallops right more often than not. So stick with the apps and get sangrias. Their sangria is good, and reasonably priced. Not terribly different from any other sangria on the block (except Sagres's blue sangria, which is nuts), but very tasty every time I've had it. The staff is almost uniformly hot ladies of Portuguese/Brazilian extraction. They try their best to do their jobs well, but they always look really unhappy. My last server was polite and she treated us well, but she hung around looking as though her manager just bitched her out over something. Bar service is usually pretty good, and the dance club has its moments, but the rest of it is kind of strained. For a better meal, try Forno's of Spain, down the street. read more

After work, a few friends and I went here, and it was really nice. The music was really good... everyone seemed to be having a good time and the drinks were fairly priced. All of the Portuguese restaurants in the Ironbound section are very simiilar: great service, but barely mediocre food. Unfortunately, you'll see plenty of 5 star reviews from people that are just impressed by the volume of food being served. Don't fall for it....these are usually the same people that say "I ate five pizzas yesterday for $2, this is the best pizzeria in the country!". Uh huh...lipstick on a pig I say. Adega's restaurant is interestingly decorated, and romantic. The service is top notch. Neither our water, nor sangria ever ran dry. Should you drop a utensil, a clean one will be in your hand before you can even look down to the floor and locate the one you dropped. This is where the excellence ends, unfortunately. I've been to Adega on several occasions. Every one of them resulted in the same opinion. The same applies to Iberia, Fornos, Fernandez,....the list goes on. The reason I go back: there's simply nowhere else to go in this traffic nightmare of a city. During this visit, I asked the waiter: "Is the tuna steak actually thick and of the quality to be cooked rare, like sushi"? "Yes" he answered. So, that's what I ordered. Now, i should know better, everything these guys make is overcooked. They must be paranoid of salmonella, etc. True to form, it arrived well done. I grab the waiter, and ask him if the cook (because I highly doubt there's a chef in all of the Ironbound section) is actually willing to cook their tuna rare. He goes into the kitchen, and returns, "That is rare". Add to this, that the usual accompanying mass of shrimp and scallops were like chewing a pencil eraser. I was so annoyed at myself for coming here with guests, again. To sum it up, if you don't have high culinary standards, then any of the restaurants in the Ironbound section of Newark will serve you well. It's quantity instead of quality. Have you ever been to a restaurant that your first 30 seconds of interaction with staff sets the tone of the entire evening? Well this was one of those times. The area around this place is vibrant, fun, European feel with a city twist...a great reason to come to Newark for a great dinner. Unfortunately this place was extremely disappointing. Breakdown: Staff - Do any of the waiters smile? The host/waiter that sat us gave us a little attitude which turned me off. Then it's musical waiters as we dealt with about 4 different ones. 2 were very friendly 2 were stoic. Ambiance - Adega grill means wine cellar. It definitely passed the test with the look and feel. It's dark with little lighting which is annoying when reviewing the menu. Plus it's loud even if there not a lot of people in the place. Voices carry. Food - Disappointing. Here is a disclaimer: my fiance and the other couple we were with liked their meals a lot. My fiance ordered the rack of lamb and she loved it. The other couple had the fish special (liked it) and a chicken dish (liked it). I had the cowboy steak and lobster special. Now I am not a seafood connoisseur but I do know that lobster shouldn't be taking a bath in that green gook that's inside. It was extremely unpleasant! The steak was nearly black and blue. It was bleeding and I had to send it back. When it came back out it was a bit more cooked (nearly 15 minutes later to come back) but it was very raw. I do like my steak medium rare but this was the extreme. I had a couple of more bites and decided to put a fork in it. Their sides (broccoli, carrots, rice and potato's) was my meal in essence. They were decent but not enough. Since I was still hungry we split the Tres Leche cake which was enjoyable. Not enough to make up for the meal. Their sangria is very sweet and expensive. Prices - Extremely overpriced. Yes the portions are bigger but you can seriously have a much better meal at a rodizio spot in Newark and spend 1/2 of what we spent. Overall - Not a good experience. My favorite Portuguese restaurant in Newark... and that's saying a lot since there are so many great ones! I usually order the Parilhada de Marisco - this is a dish for two for seafood lovers. Chock full of extremely flavorful lobster, king crab legs, shrimp, scallops, clams and mussels. Absolutely delicious. Their paellas are very good too, both the seafood and chicken/chorizo ones (Marinheira and Valenciana, respectively). And I always start every meal here with a Salada de Verao. One of the tastiest salads I've ever had - veggies with gorgonzola cheese crumbles, strawberries and the most amazing dressing (kind of like a honey dijon mustard, vinegary taste?). You will have to ask for extra dressing containers, because it's awesome to dip the complementary bread in this stuff too! Went there with a friend the other night. The bar and restaurant are completely separate. To the point, when I first walked into the door, I was in the restaurant area and had to ask where the bar was. That was after no one at all greeted me and the waiters stood there and looked at me like I wasn't supposed to be there for about 30 seconds. Was told that the bar area is out the door and in the next door. Bar was relatively packed for a day where it was monsooning outside and there was a tornado watch. Sat at the bar in the corner to the left of the door for a second and had to move because a vent was right over the seat and it was FREEZING. Anyways. My friend got there and he ordered us drinks...something I guess he knew I'd like. Don't remember what it was but it reminded me of a Portuguese margarita. Was delicious. I got the mariscada with green sauce, my friend the salmon. The food was delicious and the service was very good. I definitely will come back but definitely not to sit in the restaurant area. I was in the restaurant business for a few years when I was a little younger and the most RIDICULOUS thing you could ever do is make a client feel like you don't feel like waiting on them. Absolutely horrendous. I'd give the place 2 stars if their service was good but it was just as bad as the food. I came here with my friend and we were greeted by a snobby waiter who thought we were just poor little college kids. Tacky restaurant with a suit of armor near one of the tables and gold colored walls and tables. There's also this throne-like seat too for reservation. I thought it was stupid and tacky. The waiter had to pull the table out in order to seat me which I thought was so stupid and a bit uncomfortable that I was literally trapped in my seat. First of all, the restaurant was empty except for this other couple next to us and some people at the bar. It took the waiter 20 minutes to give us the damn menu and 30 minutes to take our order. We really didn't want to be rude and he really treated us like garbage. I don't know if it was because were weren't Portuguese or because we were college students but that was the first time that this happened to me. I eventually ordered the paella and my friend ordered the seafood in some green sauce. Both dishes came out, both equally disgusting and in huge portions. My paella had a ridiculous amount of these small shrimp and way too much chorizo that was ridiculously fatty. I could even see the white pieces of fat in it. It was watery and a neon yellow color. I've seen paella before and THIS was not it. Both of our dishes had a really fishy smell. Not the beautiful smell of the sea, but a rotting fish smell. We both literally threw up afterwards and had upset stomachs for the rest of the day. BAD service, BAD food. I'm getting a bit angry writing about this. My family and I had been craving Portuguese food and decided to search for Portuguese food in the area, while wee were spending one day in Newark after our vacation and before returning to California. We looked at our maps and ended up in the middle of Newark, we chose Adega Grill by chance and we were not disappointed. Due to my recent visit I had to update my review and take a star away. I wanted a delicious steak so I came here alone for lunch and I didn't leave happy. I had to wave the bartender down in a help me motion to get any attention from them. I felt like chopped liver. When I was finally able to order my beverage it wrong and she had to re make it. I ordered a ribeye steak that was so fatty I had to stop eating it. I also asked for it to be cooked med rare but they brought it to me well done. I feel from all of my experiences at Adegas at the bar the bartenders main focus are men that frequent the restaurant instead of every single person that decides to walk through that door. I did ask to speak to the manager not to complain but to ask him about one of pictures that they used for the magazine and he totally forgot to come back and talk to me. Never again! read more
