I want to give this place fewer than four stars, but the majority of the food was so damn good, I just can't. The issue is the servers' attitude, as another reviewer mentioned. We were a party of eight and ordered a ton of food and drinks. My in-laws both ordered mariscada-type dishes. One had lobster, which they loved. One had different types of fish and shellfish; the majority of shellfish didn't open properly (barely a crack), and the fish had an odd taste. The server said it was skate and it had a "special" taste. Anyway, my in-laws didn't care for the whole dish, and it cost about $50. They've lived in the Ironbound 60ish years and know good mariscada from bad. Bacalhau, salmon, steak, octopus, and cockles all were delicious. Then we ordered dessert - one of which was espresso crème brûlée. When we asked the server why it didn't have the traditional burnt sugar top, he said they don't do it that way. (Then don't call it crème brûlée! Call it pudding or something else.) Such attitude. And beware - they add the tip *after* adding in NJ sales tax. Earlier this week hubby and I enjoyed a delicious lunch here. We didn't realize it was college graduation day in Newark that day and all the restaurants would be packed. Luckily we arrived when it opened and by the time we left the place was full. Every once in a while, I wind up in Ironbound because I'm a glutton for both tasty Portuguese pastries and brusque Portuguese service (their abuse reminds me of my people). On one such occasion, I found myself dining on enormous portions of seafood at Seabra. The service was just as terse as I remembered, but I didn't care because each of their dishes were big enough to feed three people on a single person's cost. We started with complimentary sardine croquettes that were bigger than my hands. And tasty as all heck. Then we got the Salada de Polvo, which seems pricey at $27.95--until it arrives and you realize they've probably put ten octopi in there. And talk about perfectly cooked! If they'd been any chewier, they would've come straight from the sea. Our only miss was the Gambas Mozambique, which--while large and flavorful--was more oily than I would've liked. However, the enormous Espaguete com Vongole e Camarao that basically came in a cauldron more than made up for it. And yup, the service was just as curt as I expected. I don't think we even got a thank you. I'm convinced that if they remade The Sopranos, Tony would 100% take his goomah to a place like this. read more

This was my second time at Marisqueira, the first being about 9 years ago for my best bud's 30th - no real frills, atmosphere is pretty low key and casual, but we were treated to some delicious Portuguese food. I found myself back in Newark last Sunday for a concert at the Prudential Center meeting up with 4 other friends and we all decided to make our return visit. The service was fairly attentive and we were offered some fresh bread early on. For drinks, we settled on sharing a bottle of white wine and a pitcher of red sangria for the table. For food, some of us were non-fish eaters, so we decided to go our separate ways lol. 3 of us (myself included) shared the: Paelha ã Valenciana: raditional seafood combination of lobster, clams, mussels, shrimp and scallops with chicken, pork and Portuguese sausage, served in yellow rice. ($45.75) - large portion and with a good amount of meat and seafood, great flavor. Hearty, filling, and the yellow rice is deeeelish. Parrilhada de Mariscos Para 2 Pessoas: seafood platter for two ($79.95) - a very nice assortment of fish, including their cod, clams, mussels, baked clams, and lobster. I would have normally given this food and service a 4 star review easily, but I have to be honest and admit that, after we were done eating, we did spot a roach that had briefly crawled on our table and on to a vacant chair, which I had then pushed away. When the waiter came around, we let him know, and he was apologetic and offered us a round of drinks to make up for the scare - which we appreciated. I...want to say it's a somewhat common occurrence in the area, so I mean, not earth-shattering...but, yeah, not exactly the pleasant parting note I had preferred. We came here for lunch/early dinner after an event at Prudential. They have free parking - just make sure to get it validated at the restaurant. We ordered two different paellas because my daughter wanted octopus in hers. We got a pitcher of sangria & it was very strong - which was amazing after sitting through Disney on Ice. First time here. Disappointed that the lobster was mushy. Claw meat had pretty much dissolved completely. Towards the end of our meal the less than friendly waiter asked how our food was. When I told him, he just walked away! Was not sending back or trying to get a discount, just thought that since they asked, they wanted to know. Guess not. PS. There are only 2 reasons that the meat had a mushy consistency 1) lobster was dead before being cooked or 2) overcooked Too bad because the rest of our food was delicious. This is one of my favorite places. Great service. Professional waitstaff that has been here for at least 12 years (my first time going was back in 2011/12). Jerry is great - funny and remembers his customers. The food is big portions and delicious. Personal favorites are the grilled salmon and mussels in red sauce. We went on a Monday night. We had some relatives visiting from overseas. Wanted to show them the Ironbound. Got street parking on the block. We ordered an amazing house salad, stuffed mushroom, Scallops & Prawns in Garlic sauce. Paella Valenciana had everything - seafood and meat. Mascarpone dessert with chocolate was really good. We ordered enough food for 6 or 7 people portion-wise, but were only 3 of us. Food was good, but bill including sangria and scotch came out to $220 for 3 of us - would have been half of that before. When you think about authentic Newark it is 100% Seabra Marisquera. I love that they don't re-invent the wheel. The menu is always the same. I have my favorites on the menu and they are always consistent. I love the down to earth feel, come with fam or come alone and sit at the bar it is always nice and sweet. This is my second time eating here. Both times we've eaten in the bar area as we prefer this livelier environment. We also met Jerry who is an amazing server. Both times I've been here has been with big groups and he never disappoints. He's a jokester and it makes the night more memorable. The food is amazing no matter what we get. This time I had a watercress salad (ask for light on vinegar, they have a tendency to be heavy), our table shared escargot, and then we also shared several servings of "mixed meat kebabs" (espetadas mistas de carne). My friend had the soup of the day and said it was amazing. Fair warning one food servings here are normally pretty big. You must also try their French fries, they are cut like fresh chips- so delicious! We finished off with a few desserts which we also shared bc why limit yourself to just one flavor of goodness . Calling all seafood lovers! This is hands down mine and my husbands favorite restaurant to get some of the best seafood we have ever had. The fried calamari is easily some of the best I have had anywhere in any country we have visited. The coating is crispy and seasoned perfectly. The marinara sauce adds a great touch to the fried deliciousness. The spicy seafood soup is always a warm and cozy welcome to the start of the meal. Dip some of the rolls they give you in it for some extra carb love. And the last dish, the paella, is our favorite entree we have tried here and is a staple every time we visit. Filled with lobster, shrimp, clams, mussels and scallops you cannot go wrong with this dish. The rice is cooked to perfection and the medley of seafood gives the best balance of flavors for the main dish. Not many restaurants that we go to use table linens anymore, but this one does which gives it a timeless classy feel every time we go. The tables are always cleared and set up after each guest very quickly. The gentlemen working are always attentive to our needs and very helpful with any questions we have about new menu items we want to try. I do believe they charge a service fee for using a credit card but I can't remember the amount exactly because we tend to have cash on hand whenever plan a dinner date here. Always a treat to find an authentic institution where the food speaks for itself! I've always hailed Newark as having the best Iberian food in America and this place backs it up! They want to squeeze you for every dollar you have. Be careful because now while you wait for your food, they bring appetizers and tell you it's only $2 dollars each if you eat them and leave it on your table. They offered a beer and said if you don't like it we won't charge you, but it does end up on your bill as well as the appetizers which you never ordered nut leave it on your table WITHOUT ASKING FOR THEM. This has been in my top Ironbound selections since I was a little girl. When I think of seafood dishes and traditional Portuguese cuisine - I think of Seabras Marisqueira. Some of the best selections of fish, crabs, shrimp in the East Coast are brought to this very restaurant. I highly recommend making a reservation here as it books up quickly and the wait times can be rough. I prefer either the bar seating or front of house bar area vs the back of house restaurant. It seems to be busier, livelier and with that service is much more attentive. I'm a bit disappointed. A pricy meal with mediocre flavors. The table clearing staff may not realize that they are a bit rude. They told us to eat the food, so they could take the appetizer plates for room for our meal plates, which didn't come for another 15/20 minutes. I think I'm used to the Portuguese flavors of the old Iberia's or the current Don Pepe's. This place had bland lobster...bland overcooked shrimp in the seafood platter. They give plain white rice, which is different than most latin restaurants. Tilapia was also the filet added. The social media about this place was all hype. Whenever I visit my friend in Newark, this is one restaurant that I don't mind visiting. They use to have an outdoor patio, which I think it's much nicer but they said they had to remove it because it was getting to cold for their customers. Regardless, we came here on a Saturday around 4pm and this place was packed and felt super lively. Our waiter Jerry took care of us and had us seated next to the window. Though he did warn us that it's better to make reservation because this place can get packed especially if Prudential is having a live performance. My friend and I ordered their twin stuff lobsters, fried sardine, grilled octopus and another dish that I can't remember. Everything came out timely which was perfect because it gave us time to enjoy each dishes and let me tell you it was delicious. I especially enjoy their grill octopus. It was huge and drenched in garlic oil which up it to a whole new level of goodness. As for decor, it's a bit outdated but still fun to dine in. You'll also have to check out their kitchen staff. Through the glass you can see how hard working their staff are. Just watching them reminded me of that piece by Antonio Vivaldi, The Four Season (Winter). Ah Seabras... my beloved Seabras...My go to for the real deal Portuguese for close to 20 years has changed....and not for the better. Please don't misunderstand as the food is still top notch and authentic Portuguese, service is excellent and the restaurant is old school and spotless however Seabra Marisqueira has now gone for the money grab. It all started pre pandemic with a rapid increase on menu prices and the appearance of a ATM inside the entrance, then the mysterious credit card machine failures showed up on busy weekends with quick directions to the ATM {$2.00 surcharge/transaction} that had diners scrambling to get cash to pay ever inflated checks now with anywhere from 18 to 24% tips already added. Recently just to add insult to injury Seabras has added a 3% surcharge on credit card transactions to steer diners to the ATM which they undoubtedly earn a percentage of all transactions. In 2022 alone my wife and I have had 7 dinners with about 8 to10 diners at a time as we were so eager to expose our friends from all over the world to this cuisine and restaurant to the tune of several thousand dollars with very generous tips..... but to add on 3% just to use a card is just too much. Seabras is unfortunately becoming a tourist trap with questionable up charges as their fortunes rises with a slew of positive reviews in a number of publications and a parking lot full of out of state tags as the years go on. We will still dine at Seabras but with a heavy heart....and a heavy pocket....carrying a wad of cash in Newark no less. read more

We found this place on Yelp as highly rated from the locals for best in-class Portuguese Seafood but when we went there - it was just okay. Maybe it's a Newark thing?
