Food was delicious. Came in around 6 pm, first in the restaurant this evening. Service was okay...had to wave waiters down for attention a few times. My boyfriend paid a bill of $84 with $100. We waited over ten minutes for change. When we asked one of the waiters (not ours specifically because many guys brought different parts of our meals out) another guy comes out and said he was sorry because he assumed it was okay. I found that to be very disrespectful because although we were going to leave a $10-15 tip, I thought it should have been our choice and the waiters should not assume, especially when dealing with someone's money. Also, we were never given nor asked if wanted any napkins. Handkerchiefs were a nice color but I would have prefer some napkins. read more

Plates were being pulled before people were finished eating and were going to throw out the leftovers rather than asking whether we'd like to take them home. I came here for lunch with my family after a graduation and was very unhappy and unsatisfied. When we entered the restaurant there was no host to seat us. Eventually the main waiter pointed to a table and told us to sit. I understand if they are busy and short staffed but there was 4 other customers in the whole restaurant. The service was extremely bad. The main waiter (older gentleman bald with glasses) was extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. It seemed like he was angry with us when we needed a few more minutes to browse the menu. The food was decent. They got two of our orders wrong and did not understand what we were trying to order. It was impossible to get anyone's attention. Eventually when we were ready to go it was a mission asking for the check. Finally when we got the check we saw the tip had already been included. Wish there were more stars! Found this gem on Yelp and loved the menu. Free validated parking at 98 Madison. Warmly greeted upon arrival for our 7 pm reservation and offered two prime tables. We chose right across from the beautiful fire, very welcome on this icy cold nite. Wait staff was right there at all times. Began with shrimp in garlic sauce and chorizo flambé table side. Hubby, me, daughter, son-in-law shared all. Great start! Let me say my husband and I have been venturing into Ironbound for 30+ years. Next came the seafood paella and strip steak. Now I had seen a grilled octopus online but not at the restaurant. When I asked about it I was told "of course" they have it- and they did. Can't say which dish was the best - since we loved them all. Steak was a perfect medium rare served with potatoes and vegetables. Octopus were 3 large pieces, with olive oil, garlic, onions and peppers and perfectly done potatoes. The paella? The rice did more than provide a base- so delicious. Lots of clams, mussels, scallops, plus a lobster tail and claw. To finish? One perfect tiramisu shared, plus assorted cappuccinos and espresso. Can't wait to start bring our friends here. Surprise 30th bday dinner on December 2nd was perfect. Called a week prior to reservation for a party of 22, what can I say customer service is key Marco went above and beyond to accommodate our group without any hesitation. The food was amazing everyone enjoyed what they ordered and service was on point. If your looking for great ambiance,good food, and great service this is the place to go. The only reason I gave a 4 star is for parking we were told by the parking attendant that the lot closes at 12 then we would have to move the car to later find out that was untrue. The wait staff/restaurant are dishonest about the prices and will mislead you as much as possible. It's not obvious that fountain drinks don't get refills and the servers just say refill instead of admitting you're going to get charged $3 for half a glass of iced tea (the glasses are fairly small). The menu doesn't say the toppings on the sandwiches are all extra either and the servers once again are don't disclose that. The portions are large, which is generally nice, but the wait staff doesn't warn you and lets you over-order. What should have been a $25 dinner, quickly became $35 when I could have gotten by with half the food I ordered. read more

I love going to the Ironbound and Adega is one of the reasons! I have to be honest: I'm not such a frequent at their restaurant, but I always go to their bar. The food is really good and service is outstanding. And all the bartenders are gorgeous! The atmosphere of the restaurant is great. Very cozy and "chic". We went for dinner before the Fleetwood Mac concert at the Prudential Center on Saturday & as crowded as it was (with all us old people Fleetwood Mac fans) they were on top of everything. Food was good, my only not really a complaint complaint - I ordered the jumbo shrimp stuffed with crabmeat & was served a generous platter of what looked like 6 - 8 potato croquettes. Bizarrely, the butterflied grilled shrimp (not jumbo) were baked inside the croquet looking thing which I guess was the crabmeat - but it was like a really bready crab cake without the crab. We like Adega especially me and the guys, we order different meals everytime from the shrimp in garlic sauce to the Adega cod fish. Oh the sausage and nice cool one is a plus. How ever this time I experienced something that didn't quite sit well. I mean most guys would enjoy it but there's a time and place for everything. As we where enjoying ourselves with great food and good drinks one of the waitresses interrupted me with the bill without us finishing our food and slipped me her number ( not classy). The waitresses are very nice to look at, I am not going to lie but as a customer I thought that was very unprofessional, we felt rushed. Wow I hate to give this place 2 stars but the last two times I've eaten here have left much to be desired. I was a big fan of this place when they opened and have had many a good meal but lately... well not so much. Let me start with the good. The service, very polished and professional. The space itself is inviting, clean and well designed for both intimate settings and large groups. On to the bad. The food, which used to set this place apart from the other Portuguese - Spanish restaurants in the Ironbound has become indistinguishable from them. I don't know if they lost their chef and picked up one from up the block but this is not good. The prices have seen a dramatic increase as Adega's popularity increased. For this money I can cross the bridge and eat at one of my favorites. The final straw - The last time we ate there the cutlery seemed like it didn't complete the rinse cycle and had a horrible metallic taste. We asked for new but it was just more of the same. I will never spend a dollar at this place! My friend and I (btw we are black men) go there to check it out. We see the bouncer is letting everyone in. My friend and I get to the front of the line and the bouncer says "No more guys." So we step back figuring out what our next move would be but while this was going on we literally watched him let another set of guys in. So we ask him, "what's going on you just let those ppl in and not us and also we have a friend inside." Me and 3 other people went to a dinner night. Can't complain about the food and everything was delicious the sea food was amazing but as soon as I walked in the sat us down and poured a half way opened bottle of aqua pana which is Italian water that has nothing to do with Portuguese or Brazilian atmosphere whatsoever. Waiting 25 minutes for a server to come and greet our table. The server was so serious and did not greet he had an accent definitely he was portuguese or brazilian rude! We ordered 2 Sea food Paellas which was for 2 or 3 people each first the server said we couldn't order like that there would be an extra charge of 10 dollars per person and so we said fine. He insisted in making us order a platter each. During eating they came with a second bottle and served us again. At the end of the bill i was charged for those two bottles that i never asked for and i was charged automatic gratuity being that it was only 4 of us. I asked the server why and he said i did u a favor and i didn't charge u the 10 dollars per person. Adega Grill is one of the best restaurants in downtown Ironbound Newark. I have been here multiple times over the past 10 years and the food quality and quantity never lets me down. We recently visited on Sunday afternoon for a late lunch and the food was excellent. I had the paella and my wife had chicken franchise both were amazing. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is around the service is not very friendly, the waiters are more like zombies with the manager like the SOUP NAZZI from a Seinfeld episode. We also had the Spanish sausage for appetizer which is cooked tableside it was very delicious and authentic. I would highly recommend Adega over the multitude of choices due to the overall food and overall restaurant ambience. You won't be disappointed, enjoy. read more

Christmas dinner was very charming. The wait staff very efficient and the food delicious. The only issue was every single hot side dish was cool, from the soup to the rice, vegetables and potatoes. I sent my soup to be warmed up, but when everything else arrived even colder we were shocked. Luckily, the chicken, beef, pork and fish were at an appropriate temperature or it would have been like torture. Being the invited guests, we did not want to embarrass our host and hostess and just kept quite. I must also mention, that having recently had eye surgery, I could see how filthy the water and wine glasses were with the ambient lit room. Wanted to gag. Decor is spot on, although it's a tight fit in some areas of the restaurant. The manager of this bar is a complete Jack ass. So let's just start I ordered a drink , the bartender rushed to cash me out . Maybe it's high theft , but she did not offer me to even start a tab !! So I order one drink at 6.50 she rings me up . However I am not closed out .meaning she did charge my card , but The cc is not closed out because I have not added a tip in ( I know this because I run a bar )So I say just ring another drink in, and re-print the trailer . (When you go to a bar the checks are sitting in the computer waiting to be closed out / we don't know if your leaving a cash tip or a cc tip) !! There was almost no one else in the restaurant. The employees had to be hunted down for bread, water, additional water, additional potatoes, and on and on and on. The steak had little flavor and could not be cut with the dull knife that was provided. The sangria was overly sweet. When our waiter asked if we enjoyed our food, we told him we did not. Ate at this restaurant last night and felt compelled to write my first Yelp review. Chose this restaurant specifically to try the Portuguese food. The appetizers we ordered were good - shrimp and the lobster one. Both very tasty. However, we all had mixed reviews on our main courses. As our dinner went on, something changed in our waiter and he became ruder as the evening progressed. To the point when we were done with our meal, it just had ruined the experience. What do I mean by this? Well, we placed a wine order. Things were fine. After that, the waiter came twice, in a short period of time, while we were still trying to decide what we wanted. Then, he just never came back, so we ended up asking him to come over as he was passing about ten minutes later. That might have been the turning point, but this is just normal customer service. If he wanted to rush us along, he could've recommended dishes, but he didn't. The menu is large so takes a little while to decide what to order, especially if you've never been there before. We could only assume this was why he was so rude. Maybe something else happened at another table or in the restaurant, but to take it out on customers is just not right. Next, our food comes and one order was incorrect. When it was brought to the waiter's attention he looked annoyed and went back and brought back a plate of rice and dropped it (noticeably) on the table. Even though the steak and seafood were overcooked, we never brought this to the attention of the waiter - and he never asked if everything was all right - so we just went about eating. We ordered dessert, which another waiter took care of. Dessert was delicious (carrot cake, oreo cheesecake and chocolate lava cake). While we were finishing up, the check was dropped on our table and soon after they took away our water. However, we were not there for an over-extended period of time given we had drinks, appetizers, main course and dessert. The experience was odd and I'll never be going back for this reason. The food was great and so was the atmosphere. I would recommend this place for good food and large portions, however review your bill carefully because they may have tried to screw us on the tip. I was there with two friends and we split the bill. Our waiter added the gratuity to the total bill and then added an extra line with the same gratuity total on our individual credit card receipts. So if I wasn't looking we would have just added the gratuity AGAIN to the total leaving them with a 60% tip. He should have explained this to us when he handed us our credit card receipts.
