We hired them for a full backyard Reno with full wall of ficus trees, full DG backyard with gravel edges, and a wood fence. Everything was going smoothly with scheduling and communication. When the actual work got started, I noticed the DG was not high-quality. It contained a lot of large rocks. Also, they were not digging out enough dirt before laying the DG. I had to bring that up to the foreman and they did dig up some more dirt before laying the DG. When the work was done, a foreman did a quick walk-through with me and I thought everything looked good. We were told not to walk on the wet DG for a day or two. So two days later when I did a better inspection, I started to notice a lot of shotty work. Specifically with the bender board dividing the gravel and I noticed that they used really small nails for the wooden fence. They did come back a month later to fix the DG because there were areas that were "bouncy", as if not enough DG was laid down. They had to dig up big rocks that were preventing the DG from compacting and they laid more DG on some areas. They also tried to fix some bender board problems, but they did a really horrible job. Three months later, some wood planks on our wood fence start curving and popping up. I called the company because our DG and our fence are under a year warranty. Jake asked me to email him with photos and he said he would call back to schedule a day for repair. Since then I have not heard back from them; they have completely ghosted me. I waited a month then I started calling and no one will pick up the phone. I've left messages and I sent text messages to project manager, Amanda, who was great at communication at first, but now has completely ghosted me as well. Meanwhile, we're still paying monthly for this backyard that is falling apart way too quickly. I'm going to just hire someone to fix the fence before it damages further. I would not recommend them again. Completely overpriced for what you get.

And subsequently sought some of my local nurseries, pottery in hand, to find a suitable replacement plant. The first one I tried was a super hip spot in Highland Park. They were closed, no hours posted. IG famous? Then another on Fig. Almost no stock, nobody working. The Silver Lake one I had frequented for years was empty, but the dude I spoke with said 'yeah, pick out the plant you want.' I said 'well that's the part I could use some help with.' He pretended not to hear. I left. I remembered a spot on York but couldn't find and and then recalled the name: BLVD. Turns out they have one in Pasadena. GPS said 15 minutes. Let's do this. I found it and parked easily. Impressive stock, elevated minimal design, lots of concrete and stone planters, great pots, lots of texture, and a curated selection, from super cool architectural plants all the way down to humble basil. I approached a group of men resting under an awning. Turns out they'd just built it. Ramon jumped right in and showed me why BLVD is the absolute best. It was a blisteringly hot day but he showed me lots of options and talked everything through with a super positive attitude and lots of great information. Truly a first class experience. Love the interior space too, lots of room to see how plants and their vessels play out aesthetically. We settled on a Queensland bottle tree -- he planted it and gave it a proper zhuzh with some gravel, and sent me on my way, beautiful plant in my car. The experience was so positive that I'm plotting more foliage upgrades. Keep you posted. Until then, thank you BLVD, thank you Ramon.

J Harold Mitchell Landscape Supply is easily the best store in LA county for irrigation parts. It's…read morea wholesaler that also sells to the public, which means better products that are intended to hold up in commercial use. Not Big Box store thin plastic crap, but quality parts that last. Three locations: Cypress, San Gabriel and my favorite, Altadena. They stock the best brands in the landscape trade...Rainbird, Hunter, Toro, Netafim, etc. The store has everything possible for irrigation installation & repair, plus kickass hand tools for serious garden work, a good variety of beautiful, quality landscape lighting, plus benderboard, fertilizers, potting soil, bagged mulch and fountain pumps and more. The retail prices are good, cheaper than local hardware stores. Plus the parts will last so you won't be replacing them soon and using up all your time, money & resources. The store is in a smallish, white industrial building, kind of hidden, on Woodbury & Windsor in Altadena. It's clean, organized, well-lit and doesn't smell all rubbery or dieselly like other landscape stores. If you have a vague grasp of how to approach your irrigation issues this is a fantastic resource. Check in at the front counter for quick assistance or wander if you want to see the latest drip irrigation parts. Some stuff is behind the counter, so not completely self-serve, which is a really great old-school touch. The guys will help you troubleshoot & will help you find the parts you need. They offer occassional bi-lingual free instruction classes in irrigation controller clocks, lighting installation and it's not just product reps selling their brand but actual trouble shooting & instruction. This is a real service which homeowners & DIYers should get on! If you want to geek out with manufacturers catalogues, ask for a complimentary copy. Kinda like reading the tool section of the ginormous old Sears catalogue (yeah, that was a thing kids did in the 60s). The manufacturers provide these catalogues to wholesalers and they are great to share with clients or use as your own textbook. So ask for some! I love this store. The guys who work here are so smart & well-trained. They know their stuff & can help you save water & save time. Thanks for being here, J Harold Mitchell Landscape Supply!

I purchased 20 wire nuts and 20 feet of outdoor lighting wire and the total cost was $61.98. At Home Depot the same materials would have cost $23. If that wasn't bad enough, the staff was unfriendly and unhelpful and when I checked the receipt at home, they had charged me for 10 ga wire instead of the cheaper 16 ga wire that I received. If you are not a contractor, stay far away from this place.
