And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on.

What you see in the photos is actually their second attempt. The original work looked even worse, so I complained and they came back and redid it. Afterward, owner Tracy Zimmer personally went back to inspect the work and emailed me that "the mortar will blend in fine." So what you see in these photos wasn't something that escaped his attention -- he inspected it and considered it acceptable. The first two photos show Chimney Jack's work. The third shows the existing mortar and brickwork elsewhere on the same house for comparison. I should have left this review in 2021, but life got in the way. Spending more time at the property recently reminded me just how unhappy I still am with what I received for $850. I would not hire Chimney Jack again.

Luigi came to see the area and provide a quote quickly. We discussed a start timeframe which I requested sooner rather than later. Luigi kept me informed on the start date and followed through. This project was expertly project managed. All supplies and equipment were staged at my house the day before start. His crews showed up early in the morning, which worked great for me. They worked 3 full days in a row, completed the project, and cleaned up after. This experience was so appreciated as I have very low expectations of contract work on my house due to prior experiences. I give them the highest of ratings.
