At the same time, I asked the reception people to have Veterinarian Sarah Slater, my dogs Vet call me ASAP because my dog Tarah was scratching and biting herself incessantly and I was concerned. I was told they would have her call as soon as she arrived the following Monday. 8-5-2024 - Over the weekend my dog's condition worsened significantly and being alarmed I called the Clinic at 8 am when they opened. I was told that Dr. Slater doesn't get in until 8:30 to 9:00 am so I had to wait. I waited until 10 am and hadn't heard from them so I called again and was told that I had to be patient, the doctor had several emergencies this morning to which I replied, my dog is chewing herself bloody, scratching herself raw. I'd say that's an emergency wouldn't you. I was again told to wait. 12:00 Noon - I figured that as they hadn't called, they likely wouldn't and I called another local vet who was kind enough to squeeze my dog in at 3 pm, Clark Veterinary Hospital in Old Lyme. At 2:15 pm the doctor from Salem finally called and asked me what was up with my dog. I told her I was quite annoyed by the fact that she had waited almost to the end of the day to respond and that I had already found a new Veterinarian in the area who agreed that she'd see my dog. I went on saying that I knew my dog had a fever, likely some internal infection, was bleeding from areas she had scratched, had stopped eating and refusing to walk, and that she should have made an effort to answer my calls earlier. She apologized and said that she didn't know that I had been in the practice three days earlier, said she had two emergencies first thing in the morning and put the blame on the receptionists answering the phones needing more training never taking responsibility for her own actions. She then asked if I wanted my dog's records transferred to Dr. Clark's office and I said I did ASAP. 3:00 pm Arrived at Dr. Clarks office and was told that my dog had a high fever and a severe bacterial infection and that my suspicions and concerns were well warranted My opinion of Veterinary clinics has festered into total contempt. It seems that the whole industry has been bought up by big corporations who take over, increase prices and decrease services preferring to push the easy fix over doing the work to find root cause and in my opinion, this is reprehensible behavior when they like doctors promise to do no harm. Case in point, Colchester Veterinary Hospital gave Tarah Apoquel as a puppy fully knowing it's a dangerous drug in dogs under a year and should never be used. My puppy developed aggression toward anyone who came within ten feet and she also lost all confidence turning into a fear biter and frequently has night terrors. I took her off the drug and moved her to Salem Valley, fully thinking I'd have a much better experience than what I had at Colchester and after that experience, I have been looking into starting a class action law suit against Pfizer and their drug Apoquel. The main doctor in Salem, Robert Barratt was my horse vet for many years and it pains me to have to write this about his business but my animals are family members and I don't appreciate anyone who doesn't take their health and safety as seriously as I do and as such, this review is being written. I can not and will not recommend Salem Valley Veterinary Clinic and would suggest you do your homework as you would for yourself or any of your loved ones. Find a doctor with a 4.5-to-5-star rating and become a client with them. Avoid anyone with a lower rating and read the reviews!!! People who experience bad performance from medical "professionals" are not likely to plant a story but more likely to state the truth and that information can be used to draw an educated conclusion as to who you wish to provide medical services for your pet.

Unfortunately, my visit on February 19, 2026, was completely different. I would give this place a zero star. I brought my healthy dog in for a routine checkup, fecal exam, and vaccines required for boarding. What should have been a straightforward preventive appointment quickly became uncomfortable and confrontational. During the visit, Technician Laura Kelly repeatedly spoke over me, raised her voice, and addressed me in a way that felt accusatory rather than informative. Each time I attempted to respond or ask a question, I was interrupted and not allowed to finish a sentence. The tone was not educational or collaborative. It felt adversarial. When she stepped out of the room, I could hear her speaking about me behind the door. Shortly after, Dr. Ashley Jackson, whom I had never met before, entered the room. Rather than asking about my dog's routine, training, or overall health, the conversation immediately turned critical. The entire interaction also felt rushed. Dr. Jackson repeatedly mentioned that she had a lot to say but might be pulled out of the room soon. She spoke at length, delivering a stream of general advice without first taking the time to understand my dog or my experience as an owner. I have had German Shepherds for six years, yet I was spoken to as if I had just adopted my first dog, receiving very basic instructions such as not exercising a dog immediately before or after eating. There was no attempt to ask what I already knew or what I was already doing. Most concerning, while we were still in the room and without discussing it with me first, Dr. Jackson instructed the technician to administer an anti-parasitic medication before any fecal test results were available and without asking for my consent. Decisions were being made between the two of them as though I were not present. In the moment I was shocked and frozen. Looking back, I wish I had stopped the situation and left. This was a routine visit involving a healthy dog. The escalation into a hostile exchange, combined with medical decisions made without discussion or approval, was deeply concerning. No client should feel spoken over, dismissed, or excluded from medical decisions during a preventive appointment. The experience left me deeply upset, and it took nearly a month to recover emotionally from what should have been a simple routine visit. I hope the practice reflects on what occurred so that no other client has a similar experience.

There was also miscommunication about the wait time for test results. I was just told the results could take 7-14 days and that was why I hadn't heard from anyone.

I have sat in the waiting room for an hour or more on several occasions, but I never complained because I understand Vets and techs are busy, and our dogs have always received stellar care here. This evening I called because my dog threw up all over me and the car on our way to his appt. I had to pull over to clean everything and called as soon as I was clean enough to let them know I was late. The receptionist asked how far away I was and I said I'd be there in 10 minutes. She said "oh that's fine, come on down!". I arrived and Dr. Vitelli refused to see us. Suddenly I'm not feeling so understanding about all the times I've waited 30-60 minutes past my scheduled appt time. They could have rescheduled when I called, instead they let me sit in the waiting room for 15 minutes while Dr. Vitelli couldn't decide whether he'd do us the honor of seeing us.

But was horrified with my past visit and feel it's my obligation to communicate this experience. The attending veterinarian failed to carry out the most basic and prescribed exam functions during my feline's annual visit. This included failure to take the cat's temperature, doing a through examination of his teeth or even checking his ears or fur coat for the presence of mites. The only handling done was an abdominal and kidney check which lasted approximately 1 minute. All other wellness checks previously described were omitted which were always performed in the past by other veterinarians at this business. The only questions concerning my pet's overall condition, health and habits were what type of food he consumes, with only a single note being taken by the veterinarian during the visit which lasted hardly 5 minutes. I communicated this experience to Chester Veterinary Clinic owners in a letter, never even receiving a phone call or written reply concerning this visit which demonstrates their disregard concerning any customer dissatisfaction or feedback. Chester Veterinary Clinic was once a premiere place with fantastic veterinarians that provided a caring and competent environment, but sadly has digressed into a sub-standard level of care place to take your pet. There are plenty of other vets in the area that will provide competent care.
