My father had passed down an old TEAC reel to reel recorder/player and this heirloom was very precious to me, particularly after he passed away. I left the item with a highly reputable audio repair center in Los Angeles, but unfortunately, they were unable to make any progress on restoring it after two years in the shop. The shopowners insisted that parts would have to be salvaged from other TEAC players and this could take a very long time. I resolved that I needed to do something about getting this item restored immediately. On account of this, I am very happy that I discovered Adrian's service center. I made phone call to Adrian, and he confidently assured me that he can get new parts installed in a matter of weeks. I retrieved my player from the first shop and brought it in the Adrian's shop within that same week. After a nice conversation explaining details about tape quality, he gave me an estimate immediately without even dismantling the unit. He provided two estimates, one basic restoration, and one that would bring the unit back to full factory TEAC specs. I opted for the latter, and this would involve what is known as a tape head relap. This meant bringing the unit to a 3rd party specialist that resurfaces the heads, as cleaners would be insufficient to get the job done. Out the door, the full cost of repairs was under $600 which is a bit less than I expected. But more importantly he promised all the repairs to be done in less than a month. He spoke with me later on the phone and discussed what kind of tapes I had on hand. Armed with this information, he was able to calibrate the bias on the machine for two kinds of tapes to optimize sound quality on recording. I brought the TEAC home last week, and immediately tested out some of my father's classic tapes, and the sound quality was just marvelous. I am so relieved that I discovered a local place in Los Angeles that can specifically repair such a rare commodity these days. I would shudder at having to ship such a fragile, bulky item across the country. read more

I brought in my original 388 that I purchased in 1988. Made original demos to all my recordings on it. After years of abuse, then neglect, decided to make digital transfers of all analog recordings. I don't think there are many people like Adrian left in the world. It's not just his very specific expertise, his meticulously kept shop, or decades of experience, it's that he listens to his customers, is very honest about what he does and what to expect from his work and/or the unit that you brought in for servicing. He also takes time to teach about the players and various tapes you may run into. And taking the time to teach is evidence of the very highest form of caring . After leaving the shop with my fully serviced and calibrated TEAC 2300s, while sitting in my car trying to get myself sorted for the ride back to Burbank, Adrian came over to my passenger window to remind me to flip all the switches on the front of the player/recorder from time to time to make oxidation didn't set in. If you have a reel to reel player, pro or otherwise, and are within a couple hours of Adrian's shop, do yourself a favor and bring your player into him for servicing. Fantastic experience with Adrian. Got my Otari 50/50 back to me within the week...and I hadn't ever taken it in for service before. I was expecting a major overhaul that would of cost crazy money but Adrian just re-calibrated the machine and fixed what needed to be fixed at a more than fair price. There are very few people that really qualified to repair/restore tape machines these days and Adrian has been working on them for decades. There are many aspects to understand about these...and you really have to spend a lot of time in the industry and hours at a workbench to get things right. It can be electrical, mechanical, calibration, alignment, user error...etc that can go wrong with a machine and Adrian had the experience and skills to get your machine back to being like it was fresh from the factory...as well as educate you about how to take care of your machine. He came highly recommended by some analog recording geeks I know...real deep types that like to upgrade with Burr Brown and premium film caps . Not only was my tape machine brought back to life but he spent some time showing me how to bias the machine for different types of tape...I took him up on his recommendation for a particular brand of tape he like over what I was planning to get and it's worked great. Again at a super reasonable repair cost too... Tape sounds great for recording so make the most of it by having a properly maintained deck. It's crazy to think that my 50/50 I bought for $300 sells for $8k new! I small investment in restoration just makes sense! read more

I took my Teac 3340S reel to reel recorder to Adrian to see if it could be repaired even though it is more than 40 years old. He said the pinch roller was frozen and needed to be replaced. He gave me an estimate of $250 for repair and cleaning and said it would be a couple of weeks before he could get to it. After about a week he called and said it was repaired at a cost of $253. It works perfectly and I would highly recommend Adrian for your tape recorder repairs. Just be aware--he does not take credit cards--only checks or cash. read more

If you want a Tape player fixed properly, this is the place. Period. Adrian is no nonsense, and doesn't joke a lot- (until you get to know him...) but when you get your machine back you will think it's a different item it's so clean. Quite reasonably priced as well- especially since the repair or adjustment is done perfectly. 15 years ago I brought in an older Sony machine, he fixed it beautifully, but I moved on to "real" audio recorders like TEAC etc. It went into the shed, and has been sitting unused for 12 years. I just pulled it out expecting it to be messed up, (it was covered in dust) but amazingly the Sony works perfectly, still. Adrian restored my Teac 3440 -- which was a mess -- to new condition. This 35-year-old machine now feels, sounds, operates, and smells (!!) like it just came from the factory.
