ADT Defenders is a business that is horrible! They couldn't get a signal at my house out to the central system, so they never installed it. That's understandable... but then they wanted me to pay for 2 years of service for a system that was NEVER INSTALLED!! Then they sent it to collections! I got ADT about 5 years ago for my home in Point Loma. I started out with the monitoring service and was pretty happy with it. We wanted to put in some video surveillance so I called up ADT and they sent a salesmen out to talk about systems. I wanted to put in a wired 24 hour recording system in my house but he talked me into upgrading to pulse and using wireless cameras that record to the cloud. He assured me that if I wasn't happy, the cameras could be converted to a wired recording system later down the line.... Well the wireless cameras were terrible. You cannot program zones to ignore in the field of view. So the cameras will record a flag waving in your yard every time the wind blows. Then when they do capture anything they only record for about a minute and then take a while to reset, so you may miss someone doing something to your house because the camera has not reset. So I called ADT again to upgrade the cameras. Well the new salesmen gave me some bad news the cameras I purchased cannot be upgraded to a wired system, a few grand down the drain. Well to give ADT a chance I had him price me a wired system. They must be out of their mind, they were going to charge me $2600 for a 4 camera crap system installed and it wasn't even 4k. So I did my research, I found a 6 camera 4k system ($1200) for the price of the 4 crappy cameras that they were gonna give me. I will still use ADT for monitoring since everything is installed and we are satisfied with that part minus the pulse option. in this day in age I shouldn't have to pay an extra 15 dollars a month to be able to toggle my alarm from my phone. Do your research don't get a video monitoring system from ADT. ****update**^ Due to ADT's horrible reply I downgraded my review to one star. I believe ADT systems , residential alarm systems, are poorly run and are outrageous with their billing costs. adt is the worst. happy to sign you to lengthy contracts, but try to cancel, and they never do it. we have been billed monthly for 6 months on a house we no longer own. when i call and spend the 2 hours to speak with anrep, they claim to have it handled, but then nothing happens and they continue to bill me. this company is terrible. buyer beware. much better alarm services are available and are much cheaper now. i would never recommend adt to anybody unless i hated them. read more

My friend's husband died and she was afraid to be in her La Jolla Ca house at night. I had ADT for thirty years in my house and felt comfortable introducing her to them. They had been very responsive and good. The salesman, Dan, who now is the area manager, I think, sold her a huge system. That was over a year ago. She has not been able to use the system except at nights because of all the false alarms. She doesn't want to bother the police over and over again so she will not use the alarm during the day. No one has fixed it to tgis dsy. She went on a trip last weekend and would not use the alarm and there were several car thefts near her house. It is dangerous I have written to Dan. My lawyer has written to him. The only thing that happens is a tech comes over and tries to fix it and then it still is broken. For instance when my friend came back from her trip the ADT monitor was dead. She is paying a hefty fee per month. I am planning to sue ADT not inky to fix her system but to reimburse her for 1.5 years of incompetent service. We have sent letters to Dan as well as the CEO of ADT. We have not heard back. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with. My poor friend has little house protection while still grieving for her loss. And ADT doesn't care at all. read more

Do not use ADT service, I have been a customer over 7 yrs they always raise your rates with no justification or heads up! I was deployed for 9 months I left paying $49.99 came back to same service for$83.00! So I called in because reasoning? I get told it will be $54.00 going forward I was told I even asked this is not a contract correct they say no I'm not on contract I am a valued customer etc. Next month all my batteries low and camera stops working I call in waste 2 hrs with technical support in the end I'm told that they will send my batteries & a replacement camera this is in December here it is Feb I call to ask why I never received batteries or camera?? To be told I need to go contact Fedex!? So I ask to terminate my account to be told I'm in a 2 yr contract which I need to pay out the difference after being a 7 1/2 yr customer who overpaid while deployed, now paying for service not being used because I never received batteries or camera!!! But I cannot terminate even though I have a non operational system for over 2 months now !! Do not waste your money on ADT use Ring or Chime same services for 1/3 the price!!! Now I am supposed to wait 24 to 48 hrs for a manager to call such trash after all this time!! So glad I ordered a Ring system because my ADT is dated but still want me to pay these expensive months no upgrades offered no consideration that you were overcharging a Military Service Member while he is gone unaware... You wait hours on hold only to get someone from out of the country to half explain things to you. when they did show up they wanted to sell me stuff and made my problem ten times worse. Then to get them on the phone or show up to fix the problem they made worse has been a TOTAL nightmare. they either didn't show up or mailed me parts that they said were easy to install. LOL NOT!!! A technician is needed. It's just an all-around BAD BAD company. Do yourself a favor and find a LOCAL service that isn't overwhelmed or dispatched out to the Philippines and can actually show up and you get a call answered and things fixed. My elderly mother has attempted to cancel services she that were sold to her that she did not not need. Aside from the shady and predatory tactics that they used to sell her these unwanted services, the process that they have put us through to cancel has been nothing less the obscene. They first stated that we could not cancel on the phone since cancellations must be made via FACSIMILE - aside from the idea that the having to do anything via fax is absurd given the more efficient technology (email for one), I don't know too many people that even have/use fax machines anymore - when I mentioned that to their representative (Tammy #3249748) she suggested I go to the local library and use their fax machine (true story). Two weeks after sending the cancellation letter to four different fax numbers (the first three were apparently never received in spite of fax confirmations reports from three of those numbers) I received another bill that did not reflect the removal of any of the services that were cancelled - so I called again. This time I demanded to speak to a supervisor, (Liz #147528), who now advises me that I can send a cancellation via email! Wow, what a revelation. Unfortunately, the next day I received an email response stating that cancellations must be made in writing via Fax or via regular mail. On a side note, be advised that depending on which ADT service you have (Patrol Service, Emergency Response or Security Monitoring), you will have to speak to a separate department within ADT to deal with it. Bottom line with ADT is that you can order service in less than a minute. Cancelling service, however, is clearly designed to wear you down via a circular, never ending purposely near impossible process. I am certain their tactics are illegal particularly if there are other customers whom have experienced the same pattern of behavior as we have. read more

This alarm company is the worst!! I have been with ADT for 10 years, I had to renew my contract, ADT totally screwed me over big time!! Unbelievable after being a loyal customer this company does not care or respect loyal customers, of course I do not want to continue with this company now ADT also is charging an early termination fee, I'm going to pay it just because I do not want anything to do with this alarm company anymore!! I just had a new installation and after only a couple weeks the inside alarm continues to go off saying that the system failed. When I called they told me someone could come out a week and a day from today. Here I have an alarm going off regularly when the unit is not set and they are not willing to come out and fix it. The phone person gave me instructions on how to dismantle the system which were so complicated I could not achieve it. I am livid. So, I took the panel off the wall and removed the power wire until they can come eight days from now. What kind of crappy service is that? I would look for another system for sure. read more

The company is not concerned about anything but money. My mother had the service since 1998 and when she cancelled because of illness and age she was charged a 70.00 dollar disconnect fee. This is a 93 year old great grandmother on a fixed income. The service has not worked correctly for the last year and ADT was not concerned to address that problem but oh that disconnect fee is part of the package. What a crappy company. My mother changed her address and what did they do instead of trying to contact her, sent her last bill to a collection service. ADT got their blood money and anyone else that uses their service should have their head examined. read more

Before I even start it's obvious they will reply saying they are sorry and to call the 800 number. I had ADT in the past but they don't know anything about customer service and don't even know how they are in business. I keep calling my rep since I am having issues and still waiting on pending installation which I can't even get an answer or a reply saying "YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN WE GOT PAID ALREADY" I highly recommend looking for other companies before you even think of ADT. Once you do, that person will have no power or information to provide to you. I cannot believe that this company is still in business. We were with ADT for 13 years and moved in May 2022. We called and canceled in April, moved in May, and got a bill for May and June since they never canceled our services. I called their customer service number, got transferred over 10xs, was on hold over 3 hours, multiple managers refused to speak with me when all the representatives wanted to do was argue and was hung up on as well. They refused to credit us the months we weren't living at our old house where the electricity was shut off making it impossible to receive services. Needless to say, I filed a report with BBB in Florida since that's where ADT headquarters are and I am glad that they record all calls because I plan to subpoena them when I sue for services not provided. We've had our new PULSE system for less than a year. We had an alarm panel added to the back door last year. Ever since then, we had trouble with system periodically saying there's an "open circuit" and the panels become unresponsive. We had technicians out three times last year to fix this issue. The last time, they replaced some equipment. That seemed to stop it. But today the alarm panels again became unresponsive at 5:45pm for no apparent reason. When I got home, I was able to turn the system off and then I was able to turn the system back on. Four hours later the alarm system suddenly went off! All of the panels were unresponsive, I couldn't get it to stop. I was trying to call in about my problem and after wading through tons of menus, I was on hold waiting to speak to someone when ADT called me. My alarm is going off and she is trying to verify my address and phone number instead of helping me to turn it off! Then she said she had to transfer me to technical support to get the alarm shut off. While I was on hold AGAIN, I went into the garage and pulled the plugs on all of the equipment to shut it off, and finally the alarm stopped sounding. The tech support operator had no information or help for me at all. She said they could get a technician out here on Monday. Well I'm not spending the entire weekend with no security system because ADT is too cheap to pay overtime and get a technician out here on the weekend. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was placed on hold for 5 minutes. She finally came back and said they could squeeze me in tomorrow between 12pm and 5pm. I work on Saturdays so of course this means I have to leave work to meet the technician here at my house. This has been a horrible experience for me, the worst I have ever experienced in 17 years of having alarm systems in my homes. I will attempt to discontinue my contract with ADT and find some other service to take care of my security needs. When something goes wrong with your equipment at 9:30pm on a Friday night, and your alarm is blaring out of control, you do not need some snippy operator talking down to you and basically not caring about your problems. I am the customer. I did not cause this problem - ADT caused this problem with faulty equipment. ADT should be apologetic and do everything possible to remedy my problem as soon as humanly possible. But ADT did not do that, ADT made me ask for a supervisor to get my problem resolved and treated me badly in the process. And we have yet to see if they can fix the problem. There aren't that many security services out there, but I would recommend that you try any of them other than ADT. I did not sign up with ADT, they bought out the company that I did sign up with, so I became their customer by default, not by choice. To my detriment. read more

Defenders/ADT is terrible. Stay away from them. Reason: They came to my house several days after the appointed date. My son was at home. They were supposed to give us an estimate. We never got one. But they claimed they installed a system. But they did not. They charged a start-up fee and have been billing us monthly. I have complained many times. They will not stop, even after they sent someone to our house to confirm we do not have a system installed. read more

Sales people will come to your house and install equipment that costs undisclosed money. I had a young man come out to my house and install two touchpad's. He went through a full sales pitch that would've cost me $7 to $8000. I told him that I wanted what the coupon said. Everything changed after that. Later that night I went to set my alarm in my bedroom and the touchpad that was previously installed was gone. I was never informed that this would be uninstalled. You can imagine how disappointed we were. I had to call corporate to get my touchpad reinstalled. I don't know how you hire service members that install equipment before letting the customer know that it's extra in cost. The equipment however is good. Major Alert: This company is an absolute scam and I have absolutely no idea how they are still legally operating after reading so many other victims stories. ---*UPDATE* in response to ADT's comment. We did have someone check with defenders and that was the second guy who came in and took pictures of everything and then told us that it's our of his hands and he can't do anything about it. --- We used to have ADT for over a decade. Recently we decided to switch back to them because there was a deal for 19.95 which we confirmed with two different managers at ADT before making the switch back. They came in and "switched" our old security system out. I put quotation marks because the guy who came in only switched some of our old security system. Within a couple days the security system stopped working and kept beeping every couple minutes. We called them to fix it. Apparently the guy who installed our system quit without notice the same day he installed our "ADT security system". Another guy comes in and tells us that the first guy didn't even switch all our old equipment out and that he's never seen such terrible work. He took pictures and left. Long story short, we've had to call ADT so many times with terrible customer service, one lady even hung up on us on the phone, and to add to all this, they didn't honor the deal that they originally told us about for 19.95 a month, they send us the first bill (all the while we haven't even had a working security system) and they're trying to charge us $48 a month. No one has ever come to fix the security system so now we're stuck with a non working security system. They've been harassing us to pay a $2000 bill for the broken security equipment they failed to even install correctly. And are now threatening to take us to collection agency. There's much more details I can add to this story but for the sake of keeping this short, all I can say is DO NOT FALL FOR THE ADT/DEFENDERS SCAM. When I called corporate I was transferred around and had to repeat and explain myself 4 different times. Not to mention that other times I called. RUN RUN RUN!! AVOID! We kept seeing their nifty commercials with the new touchscreen control panel that you can access through your smart phone and we were definitely interested. Sadly, when the salesperson showed up on our doorstep, we took the bait. :( The bait and switch. The ADT guy told us we could have our system reactivated AND upgraded for no charge with a 2-year contract. He never mentioned THEY would not be servicing our account. When their "authorized agent" shows up (some doofas from Millennium Alarm in Riverside for corns sake) he says our company doesn't have that equipment and you'll need to keep the 8 yr old system we already had. Ah, hello... I just signed a 2-year contract for something completely different! Better yet, we didn't get an operation manual or anything. The installation guy rattled off some stuff and a few codes as I feverishly jotted things down on a piece of paper. YEAH, that's service alright! Too bad, so sad. ADT customer service is nonexistent. Once they suck you into a contract, you'll get the "we don't care attitude" because there's nothing you can do to get out of your contract. You know how the phone company and cable company treat you, you can expect the same crappy customer service from ADT. Their equipment is crap - I get false alarms and sensor tamper notices all the time. Even when the alarm isn't set, the alarm goes off... go figure! They call, run through their scripted BS and turn it off. Once I was out of town and the alarm goes off and the send the San Diego PD to investigate. Guess what, they never filed the city permit so now I owe the city $146.75 for the visit. Oh yeah, no one was breaking in... just that good ol' reliable ADT/Millennium Alarm equipment doing it's job guarding my crap. Don't do it! Since we'll have to pay $146.75 for each police visit, we can't even use our system. Unfortunately I'll have to keep paying the contract off but at least I won't have to deal with them at all. Hardly a week goes by that I don't get an illegal telemarketing call to our number on the federal Do Not Call list. Solar systems and security systems are the highest on the list of current scumbags. Usually it's a GE or ADT *distributor* but this week I got a call from a telemarketer who did what they call a "hot transfer" into ADT headquarters. Well, well. ADT corporate is in the illegal telemarketing game now? Anyway, as usual, I made the appointment to sting the sales person and see if they wanted to discuss the ethics of where they get their leads. My sales guy was the notable Ghassan Hacher mentioned here on Yelp, but after I gave him the form letter Cease and Desist Notice and committed to sue them after any further calls in violation of the DNC list, he discarded it on the ground and threatened to sue ME for a false appointment. I advised him it was an investigative sting, and the DNC victim has no liability here. Whereas ADT does. If you have a problem with ADT or their distributors, they have a (on paper at least) good looking Ethics Policy. Report violations of it to ethicsline@adt.com and see if you get anywhere. read more

After my contracted term with ADT, they would not reset the alarm system to the default settings - essentially bricking the alarm system. Since I own the system after two years, I wanted to 1) add more sensors; and 2) use a cheaper monitoring service. After numerous calls to ADT about the system that I now own, they refuse to pull their claws out of my alarm system. They'd rather render it useless than be customer-oriented. I think I'll now go ahead and spread this ADT experience far and wide on the Internet. I'd recommend that everyone go elsewhere, or at least go into the contract knowing that your system is going to be useless after you stop monitoring service with them. I can't wait to cancel my monitoring when the 2 year contract is up. My alarm is beeping and requires service. The soonest they can schedule a service call is 6 weeks out. The service we got from Alarm2000 was so great that I wished I had switched from ADT years ago! I left ADT and went without security after I called to test my system and it turned out they had "lost" my home phone number and were apparently monitoring my cell phone for an alarm instead for 3 years (what???) Keith the owner of Alarm2000 is pleasant, knowledgable and thorough. As opposed to other alarm installers I had come to the house, he insisted on revamping my existing higher end wired security system (instead of putting in a cheap wireless system I could have bought on Amazin for $150). Prices are great. He lets you switch monitoring companies if you want and checks that your SDPD permit is current. The actual install cost me $0, he passed the bill on to the monitoring firm to cover in exchange for a 2-year contract. The Alarm2000 installer Steve was super, very polite, low-key, and thorough! He found that my ADT system would have not worked for years (even if they hadn't lost my number).... when I switched high-speed Internet providers my phone line to the alarm had been disconnected!!! He tested the smoke detectors, gave good instruction on the system, and cleaned up after the install. I would use Alarm2000 again and never consider ADT!! read more

The clerks at customer service are great but I'll try to deal with the sales people. The turnover is unbelievable. It will take an act of God or an attorney to get any sales people to return phone calls, Dont deal with LaRee Ewing shes apparently a former model who still thinks her beauty and brains will get her anywhere! But the management love her so complaining to the head guy "Mike" didn't help. They just blamed me and said I always call for upgrades (duh!) but didn't sign up. Hey that's my business and life! ADT is killing me. I was told their was no Install Charge and the cameras are 100.00 Each. I know have a bill for almost 600.00 with no explanation in charges. I would avoid going with them, their field techs are great, but the sales and support staff are no good. I will keep posting daily updates on this until it is solved.
