Although I appreciate that they didn't charge a diagnostic fee, I'm really disappointed with my…read moreexperience. I brought my car in due to an intermittent gear slipping issue, which I had already traced to a solenoid problem--a very common issue with my Pontiac G6. The symptoms only occurred twice, very briefly. My check engine light came on both times but turned off on its own. I was still able to drive the car on the freeway at full speed with no issues. The problem only showed up during city stop-and-go traffic. I specifically asked if they could just replace the solenoid, and was told no. Instead, I was told I "only had gears 1 and 2" and that I'd need a $4,800 transmission rebuild--which is objectively false, as I literally drove the car 70+ mph on the freeway both before and after leaving the shop. My engine light was off before coming to the shop, turned on once at the shop, then turned back off shortly after leaving. There is no way my car had only gears 1 & 2 I know what that feels like as it happened twice briefly. So to say this to me is insane. Mind you wouldn't have been able to go more than 25 with out the car struggling they must have assumed I don't know a thing about cars. Possibly because I'm a woman and I went alone. They also claimed the solenoid was too difficult to access without replacing the computer and warned me about my car's mileage, as if that meant it wasn't worth fixing. But then, on my way out, they admitted it's a "really great car" and "this is the only issue." It felt manipulative. I decided to trust my gut, went to a different shop, and had the solenoid replaced--and now my car runs perfectly fine. No rebuild needed. If I hadn't known what I was talking about, they would've gladly let me spend thousands on a completely unnecessary repair. Trust yourself. Do your research. Don't let fear-based upselling push you into something you don't need. Also from reading the reviews it sounds like the routinely tell their customers they need a rebuild and successfully do the rebuild. (more than likely something very easily replaceable) However a good transmission shop doesn't just rebuild, they properly and honestly diagnose and repair. He also tried selling me cars on the way out. Notice how he hasn't replied to this yelp review and also told me he feels bad for me in the text? Very unprofessional I don't need your pitty I needed honesty which I didn't get from this shop. He also told me don't buy a used car you can't guarantee you won't have problems it's best if you fix this one with us. Also told me not to go to another shop because id want a local shop lol

honest & kind, old fashioned & down to earth…read more my truck had this grinding noise. i first had it diagnosed by a SF city's legacy business auto repair shop. they said because noise travel everywhere, so they can't say for sure its source. after advising me to change several parts unnecessarily, eg, axle shaft, etc, the grinding noise persisted. they failed to find its origin. next, i sought help from a Costco's auto program repair shop. they showed off to me how they make use of misc fancy, allegedly expensive diagnostic tools. yet, in the end, it was a waste of time. then, i sought help from Powell's Hydramatic. Sam simply rolled up his sleeves and manually break the relevant components apart. within hours, he pinpointed the source of the grinding noise being the failed propeller shaft, even showed me the heavily grinded parts. therein lies the strength of Sam, old school, he could grasp the problem by understanding how all the parts work as a whole via his 70+ years of experience, and hands on approach to the problem. appears to be a hobby shop for Sam, he still has that spark of curiosity in solving automotive mechanical problems. decades passed, yet he likely is still very much that same young apprentice who first came across Hydramatic transmission when GM first introduced it, not swayed by the greedy and bureaucratic corporate culture of prevalent auto repair industry. and Maria is honest, caring, and resourceful in getting parts for her husband's mechanical hobby. Sam and Maria are honest and competent. and very convenient too to visit because their shop is just 5 minutes walking distance from 16th street Bart station.

I brought in my 2005 VW New Beetle Convertible, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. The shop itself is calm and quiet, almost like a library -- very different from most auto shops. I was given clear information, no pressure, and everything was explained in a straightforward way. Customer service was excellent, no hidden charges, and the car was handled with care. Overall, a very positive experience. I'd definitely come back and recommend them to others.

I've been meaning to write this review for a long time…read more My Ford F-150 Lightning was involved in an accident that caused significant damage to the front end. The bumper was torn apart, the headlight assembly and surrounding bodywork were heavily damaged, and the front corner of the truck was basically ripped open. Looking at it immediately after the accident, it was pretty painful to see. They brought it completely back to life. What impressed me most was that this wasn't a simple vehicle or a simple repair. The F-150 Lightning is a sophisticated EV with cameras, sensors, electronics, lighting systems, and driver-assistance equipment integrated throughout the front of the truck. I wanted the repair handled by someone who understood that putting a vehicle like this back together correctly involves a lot more than replacing a bumper and matching the paint. The entire process ended up taking about six weeks, largely because of parts shortages and delays getting components from Ford. Throughout that time, the shop was easy to work with, communicated with me, and handled the insurance side of the repair so I wasn't stuck trying to coordinate everything myself. When parts were delayed, they worked through it rather than cutting corners just to get the truck out the door faster. And the end result speaks for itself. You would never know from looking at the truck today what that front corner looked like after the accident. The body panels line up properly, the bumper and trim look right, the lighting was restored, the paint matches beautifully, and the entire front end looks like it did before the accident. After seeing how badly damaged the truck was, getting it back looking this good was honestly remarkable. If you need ordinary body work, I'm sure they can handle it. But where I would especially recommend this shop is if you have a newer or more sophisticated vehicle--particularly an EV--with significant collision damage and you want someone you can trust to put it back together correctly. My F-150 Lightning went in looking wrecked and came back looking like my truck again. I couldn't ask for much more than that. Long overdue five-star review. Highly recommended.
