As I was driving through San Francisco on Friday afternoon, all of a sudden, my dashboard flashed a message - low oil - do not drive further. Seemed strange as 3 days before all was fine. I was about to get on the Golden Gate Bridge so I knew I needed help. I spotted the sign & turned around. The gentleman was so considerate. He came out to the street, opened the hood, & saw there was no dipstick. He went back into the garage & brought out a container of oil & put it in the motor. He suggested I watch the dash to see how that registered so he didn't put too much in. What he did put in was just right! I am so grateful that he took the time to take care of this issue. After 10 years of going to the dealership, I decided to branch out and try a highly recommended local auto service shop. I could not be happier with Precision Auto. They are friendly, extremely quick, absolutely reasonable, and they actually knew who I and my car were, as opposed to the dealership Who never had any history of service on my car and who never were able to answer a question or return a call. My main reason for leaving the dealership was that every time I went in they recommended three to 5000 $ in repairs for a car that was worth about 7000. Terrible and highly unprofessional business!! I brought my 2005 Ford econoline van to them last year for a front brake job. Recently, I called John and Jockamo (THE OWNERS) about getting an estimate for changing the spark plugs on my ford van and changing the belts and hoses on my other 2002 van. Now all of a sudden, they said they don't work on vehicles that are 2002 and 2005 so now I have to lodge multiple complaints against them and their business to the better business bureau and also to the California State Bureau of auto repair (https://bar.ca.gov/), I will also lodge complaints to State agencies to ensure that their shop mechanics are properly certified and I will also lodge complaints to ensure that their employees are being paid by payroll instead of cash only because if its cash only then they aren't paying their taxes. I will also lodge a complaint with the franchise tax board and request an audit of their business. I will also be sending in multiple friends from my church group who own older cars like mine and if John and Jockamo perform any work on those vehicles, I will take them to court and sue them for harassment of unfair business practices, choosing customers who they only want to service and preferential treatment towards others who are not like me. read more

Today was my third time bringing my car to Precision. First time was for an oil change and replacement of both front struts, in February. Second time was in July, for an oil change and safety check before a big road trip. Today was because I'd started hearing clicking sounds in my front end. Before the drop-off, I made the mistake of Googling and found so much alarming information online that I was actually considering whether I should buy a newer car (mine is 15 years old). Steering column? Suspension? CV joints? Is it time to move on and stop putting money into this car? Then John texted me in the afternoon to let me know that one of the struts from February was the cause and they had replaced it under warranty. I'm embarrassed to confess that I hadn't asked about a warranty 7 months earlier so I was surprised. They could have blamed the clicking on any number of other things. I was in San Francisco a few weeks back and it appeared my vintage (old) car was starting to overheat. Precision Auto was right there so I stopped in and told John, who appeared to be very busy. He dropped everything he was doing and noticed a leaky hose, rusted clamp and another problem that may have become a big problem in the future. Usually it's been my experience in a situation like this, you have to leave the car and you are stuck for hours. John seemed to care, and knew what he was doing. I almost never post reviews but I feel compelled to so no one else gets cheated the way I did. I went once before due to brakes issues and paid well over $700 since my brakes were screaming/I couldn't recall the last time I had my brakes pads replaced and I didn't want to risk it. Thinking this is a moral establishment, I decided to go back when my car had an engine light go off. I paid $200 for a thorough"inspection/diagnosis" and they quoted me over $1,000 to "fix the engine issue". I had a gut feeling I was being lied to and cheated (mind you I'm no mechanic) so I took my car to a trusted South Bay mechanic the next day and he not only "fixed" the problem in 30 seconds (turns out it was a 2-inch hose that had a crack in it and was a 75¢ part) but he also told me THEY DIDNT EVEN OPEN THE HOOD OF MY CAR for the so-called"inspection". How did he know this do you ask? Typically car engines are super dusty and when my South Bay mechanic opened the hood, there wasn't a single hand print anywhere; the coating of dirt was even. If you feel like getting scammed, then this is the business to go to. read more

I'm doing a mechanic search and had to check in on my old mechanic, Precision Auto, to see how things are with them. Realized that I've never left a review -- so here it is: Bluntly put, the family over at Precision Auto Repair runs the best mechanic shop in Northern California. I can confidently say this in my 20 years of car ownership of four different Subarus across multiple towns and cities from SF to the Nevada state line. John, Jr, and Dad serviced two high-mileage cars of mine. There's a Nathan for You episode where the business plan is to put a mechanic on a lie detector when diagnosing car trouble, and I think we've all felt this when working with some mechanics that are out there - I certainly had a mechanic in college who took advantage of me. Precision is different. Precision can expertly translate complicated mechanical issues to the typical car owner in a way that even the most novice car owner can both understand and make their own judgment on where one should prioritize fixing their car. There are those mechanical issues, especially with older or high mileage cars, that can lead to endless money pits to fix. Precision recognizes this and provides honest, transparent guidance to servicing your vehicle without just opting to drain their customers' bank accounts if service doesn't make sense as a vehicle reaches the end of its serviceable life. John had a knack for knowing the time of year and what I would be doing with my car during that season. He would diagnose and provide service recommendations based on the usage level I would be putting the car through for the next couple of months, whether it is winter driving or long summer road trips. Precision would work around my schedule and offer secure overnight storage if my job prevented me from same-day dropoff or pickup (while having no problem with quick same-day service if it was an easy enough job). They are great at communicating findings and cost through text. While my car was being worked on throughout the day, I would always know precisely what the issue was, how important it was to fix it, and what the cost was. Working with Precision made me a better car owner in the level of detail they would communicate, along with the driving type impacts on mechanical systems. I've never had more trust in a mechanic to keep my car in its best shape while knowing that they won't overcharge me for a service or where the service doesn't make sense. We had the misfortune of getting in a minor accident that resulted in a cracked oil pan on our '02 Passat. We live in San Diego area but were in San Francisco for a week. We had to get the car fixed right away so we could get home. It's a scary thing to be 500 miles away from home with a car needing major repairs. Not knowing any mechanics in the Bay Area, I consulted Yelp, read thru the list of local auto repair places and after reading reviews crossed my fingers and selected Precision Auto Repair. I am so happy I did. John was able to get the car in the day I called, inspected it and within a few hours got back to me with an accurate estimate for replacement of the oil pan. This was on a Monday and we had to leave for home on Wednesday. He promised it would be ready Wednesday morning, it was and we were on our way home. My car was dead. Dead as a doornail. Based on my car's manual, my suspicion was that the starter motor had died. And the fix was going to cost an arm and a leg. Especially if I took it to the Honda Service Center. Rather than that I had it towed to Precision Auto Repair. They kept in touch with me by texting. All along the way. It was a dead battery. The guys at Precision called if fairly, got the car up and running the same day and my dog and I feel much better about things. In the middle of asking a question hangs the phone up in my face for no apparent reason!! Wow Still in disbelief!!

My break light went out. Made an appt but was turned away when I called back to say that my trunk lock won't open. John sounded annoyed that how come I didn't disclose that. I didn't understand the problem because I called back as soon as I realized it and my car is not at the shop yet. John said he would not want his mechanics dirtying my interior, crawling inside my car. It means it can be done, but they maybe don't want to do the extra work. I don't even mind paying extra for that. Even questioned me how come I have not gotten around fixing the trunk lock. Caught me off guard. Not really his business. He was rude and grumpy. Disappointing. Unreliable shop. I called another shop and they were more than happy to help. More power to your business :) Lol read more

This review is a long from my experience from November (2019). It took me a long time to fully absorb what even happened here. I've never left a negative review before, but I think it's important to share my experience. I've had work done before at this shop done by Ryan and had a wonderful experience. But this time it was serviced by John (the owner?) just for general maintenance. The problem started when John would text me that he had done unapproved work on my car. I blew it off, as I probably needed to get this work done anyways. I went to pick my car up the next day and John had moved my car to the private parking lot around the corner shared with a distillery. My partner and I open the car doors to get in and the door creates a dent in both fenders. I ask John what happened and he tells me someone must have backed into my car in the distillery's parking lot. I ask to see the distillery's security footage of the parking lot for that day and comb through it. Nothing. No one hit my car in the parking lot. That leads me to believe he ran into something on his property and wasn't mature enough just to tell me or try to fix it himself. I then leave my car there to call my insurance and round the block to cool off. Rounding back to the parking lot I see John MOVED my car back into his shop to PULL out the dents with a crow bar. While he tries to dissuade me from calling the insurance office. I honestly should have called the cops but I'm too nice and let someone take advantage of me. This was the most bizarre experience I've ever had with a mechanic. I would seriously consider bringing my vehicle her if i were you. read more

I had asked my friends for advice on a car mechanic in the city, and all of them said "I have one, wouldn't recommend.".
