I brought my car (2018 VW Golf R) in for an oil change. This is the first time I've taken a new car to a non-dealership associated service center. I'm glad I did! From the time I arrived, Lance was there to greet me and check the car in. I then head into the shop to do my "paperwork" with Zach who got everything punched into the system quickly. I was in & out in a matter of minutes. Zach asked what time I wanted the car back, in which I said 2pm, and I was off. At 1:15pm, Zach called me to tell me the car was done. I went in to pick up the car and all the paperwork was already in order. Zach explained everything done to the car and advised me that I have a "bubble" on one of my tires (probably due to the crappy roads in this City). Anyways, in & out in 5 minutes! I have two Audi - A4 and TT - and those guys have been awesome. They not only regularly maintain both but troubleshot a very strange issue that I had with the A4. What I really like about them is that they are relentless - they keep digging until they find and fix the problem. I worked mostly with Zach (he is awesome) but have the impression that this is the culture of the entire shop. Agree with others: the staff is courteous, professional. NEVERTHELESS: Based on reviews, I took in my Jetta, which was having braking problems. Advanced quoted me 1300 -- telling me the vacuum pump needed to be replaced, and its hoses. I emailed the quote to another shop, who (sight unseen) quoted me 800 on the same work, and then took it to Ed's Autohaus, where I learned only the hose needed to be replaced. Final cost: 250 dollars. tl;dr: saved a thousand dollars & lots of unnecessary work by getting a second opinion elsewhere. read more

I have been to this shop twice and I do want to preface this review that the staff here is very kind and organized. After my trusted shop closed, I looked for about two weeks to find the right specialized shop for a VW. The first time I had my car serviced here, I was shocked by how expensive the bill was once arrived. I left feeling duped in that regard but decided that at that point the work had been done, the car was fine and I just needed to make a mental note about my experience. The second time the car was brought in was for a standard mileage service. You can imagine my shock when I called and was informed the cost of the repair was $7,600! I was told that I "pretty much have one of everything wrong with the car." And that they were "surprised that the car's tires were still functional." Remembering the experience I had the previous time, I asked that they email me the invoice prior to starting any work on the car. That invoice was 6 pages long; almost every aspect of the the car that was tested noted, "ok at this time." or "working as designed." That was phase one of being confused why it was even listed on an estimate then. Looking further, I saw line item after line item of superfluous work with massive price tags. Just to name a few: I needed a new bulb for my tail light (the same light I had when I took the car in is still working just fine a month later) yet that somehow turned into a bulb replacement, new license plate light and tail light assembly at $397. $585 to replace my break pads that are currently at 50% and 40%. A cowl cleaning (remove wiper arms, remove cowl cover, vacuum out debris, clear drains, inspect cabin filter and replace if necessary,and reassemble cowl and wipers.) - $240 dollars of work. The list really goes on and on. While I appreciated the "advice" to shop tires around because they will always be more expensive at the shop (~$950 for 2 tires at Advanced Autowerks), I decided something just felt too weird and forwarded the invoice to a family mechanic whom advised I take the car elsewhere after being taken aback by what he called a huge ripoff. Well, I took the car to two separate shops with VW expertise in the city just to see what they came back with. Much to my surprise, both automotive shops specified that the car only truly needed an oil change; two other parts could be addressed (totaling ~$550 for all three) but there was absolutely no need to do so at this time. I paid $140 compared to 7.6k and my car is running perfectly fine. I want to hope that the estimates that Autowerks provides their clients is with the intent of maintaining exceptional and overtly extensive preventative care for the cars they service but in this case (and what appears to be others in these reviews), they look for any and every piece of your car that *could* be more new and tack it on whether it actually needs it or not. I suggest looking elsewhere. read more

My wife & I have been bringing our cars (Audi, Porsche, VW) here for more than 15 years. We've always been treated fairly, given an accurate estimate, and get the car back on-time. They happily accommodate when I ask for "cheap & quick" versus "more costly, but longer-term" estimates. I've sent others to Advanced for second opinions. They've fixed repairs botched by other shops and dealerships. We don't buy used cars without having Advanced evaluate the car first. Keyword: honesty. Let's face it, mechanics have a bad rap due to their perceived level of honesty. It is for that reason I dreaded finding an auto shop. But I'll get to that in a minute. I have an Audi A3 and was due for a 15k service. I've only ever had my vehicles serviced at the dealership, but this time the dealership quoted me $575 and couldn't get me in until July as they were booked up due to recalls. I had called a few mechanics in Santa Rosa (where I live) and was quoted anywhere between $190 and $425. Confused, I Googled the 15k service maintenance schedule and found Advanced Autowerks. I tried calling them for a quote on a Monday and reached a third party answering service who forwarded along my message. I received a return call shortly after and was told the shop was closed on Monday, but they'd reach out to me by 9am Tuesday with a quote. Tuesday morning rolls around and I received a call as promised. I was quoted $250 with a 15% special and was informed of all the services that would be performed (which matched Audi's service schedule). I was able to book an appointment for the next day, unlike the two month waiting period through the dealership. When I picked my car up, it was actually $100 less than the estimate I was quoted, as my brake fluid was fine and didn't need to be replaced (or flushed?). Knowing nothing about cars, they could have easily charged me the extra $100 and I would have never known the difference, but they didn't. Thus, I was happy I found an honest mechanic. Overall, Advanced Autowerks saved me more than 68% off what the dealership would have cost and I am confident and happy in the work performed. From my first interaction - with someone calling me on their day off just to let me know they'd be in touch when the shop was opened the following day, to dropping off and picking up my car, I was thoroughly impressed with their friendliness and professionalism. They even left a Thank You note with a gift card to Philz Coffee - a nice surprise. The only surprise the dealership would have left would have been a ridiculously inflated final bill. First time for servicing (went San Rafael BMW and didn't like their service so switched). Second time pothole hell and both front and back struts and wheels destroyed, Zac M. worked with my slow insurance company to give me the best results. Recently I need new tires and changed wheels, they might be a slight bit more than a Les Schwab but the extra care and advice is worth it. Go ahead and use them without hesitation. Growing up, I was a big Volkswagen enthusiast. My first two cars were VW Corrados, a G60 then VR6. I went to Tomas Sport Tuning in Richmond when I lived in the East Bay and they did all the work on my cars. I had all the different modifications, bigger wheels, etc. Fast forward to now, I admit I got lazy and lost passion for cars. I took my Audi to a cheap mechanic next to work, who literally destroyed my car. How foolish of me to trust that shop. Instead of having my Audi last a lot longer than it should have, it's now too much down the hole for its worth. Learn from my mistake and take your VW/Audi, Porsche, BMW to Advanced and do it the right way. They were able to diagnose the problem the other mechanic failed to fix as well catch a hell of a lot of other problems that were wrong with my car, for next to nothing. The shop is highly professional, but quite expensive. The repair bill for a valve cover leak, an oil filter housing leak and changing thrust bushings was $3514.75. The shop provided me measurements to justify most repairs which is the technically correct way to assess wear and tear. Advance replaced a $716 valve cover as a precaution on a part they said endemically fails, but Google had no search record of endemic BMW valve cover failure. They did tell me up front and I didn't pay close enough attention. read more

Like the other yelpers who gave one or two stars, I found Advanced Autowerks to be initially very friendly and professional, but left feeling ABSOLUTELY overwhelmed and untrustworthy of their word. I dropped off my car for some very minor maintenance I knew I needed, but I got a phone call later in the day saying there were three major mechanical problems (leaking oil pan, transmission gasket, and leaking fuel injection pump). I called a couple other places so I could compare Advance's estimate. Advance's estimate was at least $150 more in each repair! Total, labor and parts would add up to be just short of $3k which was just so far from what I could afford. Who knows they might do a good repair job and that's why they charge so much, but I'm not going back to find out. I'm super disappointed in how much pressure was put on me to address the mechanical issues immediately, as if I had money to throw at them (AKA Scare tactic?). Also, I made it clear that I could not afford these repairs immediately and I was interested in what alternative solutions were available to me (such as used parts or just topping off the oil) until I could afford to fix it. Their response undermined me and was definitely spoken in a tone of irritation and condescendance (which alas, included personal remarks on the consequences of/my interest in having a green car). Is it that strange that a twenty something girl who works as a waitress part time can't afford to fix her car? He didn't charge me for looking at my car, which was nice, but it doesn't really take the bitterness off the tongue. The principle of assessing the customer's needs was far from met, and it was clear they were hoping to just squeeze me for what I was worth. They could care less that I'm not giving them money to fix my car because they are ideally looking for a customer who can fork the money over time and time again. It took me a week and a half to stop panicking from my visit/their "professional advice" and to learn that there were definitely more cost efficient alternative solutions (a few!!) and far more reliable and honest people in this industry. I would refer folks with VWs to Moss Motors. So helpful, approachable, reasonable... I'm paying a sliver of the estimate Advanced gave me. UPDATE: Randy called me the day after I posted my yelp review to apologize, which I semi expected as he gave me apology and box-of-suggestion speech mirroring the ones he has given to other 1 star reviewers. Which is fine, but where they will improve is contingent on if they apply anything. True, I am one customer, and it seems as though others have had much better experiences, but as it stands I am really pissed off. Especially since I've come back from Moss Motors to hear that there actually isn't anything leaking from my oil pan or transmission gasket, which Advanced wanted me to replace completely. And my fuel injection pump isn't leaking after adding a fuel additive. WTF. Advanced told me my car wasn't safe to drive around. And yes, they will advise you unnecessary work because they only want to "guarantee quality repairs". The guy at the front desk is a liar! I drove my VW GOLF there with my engine light on. All I want to do is -- check the engine light... He said they have to do a diagnostic test, and gave me a paper with a $139.00 charge on it. $139.00 for just a test ?!!! I refused to sign it, then he said it's nothing but for making sure you want to do the test, they usually only charge a 'small amount of it' (I think probably just using a computer, reading the code which I think it's fair). Sign the paper, leave my car there at 8am and, it took a day until I called them , he said something serious happen to my car ,the estimate would be up $4,000 !!!!!!! then #$%#$@#$^@#$... (He was talking so fast which makes me nervous at that time..) I refused to do any repair on the phone and took the Muni train to get there immediately . Why he is a liar? Because ---only charge a ' small amount of it '---- IS THE WHOLE $139.00 !!! He was ready to rob me at the beginning.. He said they checked everything which took 3 hours' labor..$139 ....I NEVER ASKED THEM TO CHECK EVERYTHING!!! Here is EVERYTHIN for example: 'Headliner, Front bumper, Missing lower covers including wheel liners, Missing battery covers .....'.I mean...those truly are everything but..Do they have anything to do with the engine light? First off, at the risk of sounding rational... I don't care what my mechanic looks like. I guess I'm just not like the other reviewers; I'm not a desperate housewife with no idea how a car works. Before moving to the city, I used to do all the regular maintenance on my cars (oil changes, brakes, fluids, etc.). Now that I don't have a garage to work in, I'm a bit stuck, so I wouldn't mind paying for a shop to do the work. However, I do mind when an independent shop that has a 4.5 star rating on yelp charges me 2 hours @ $120 / hr when I know the work takes an hour at maximum! I go in for front brake service since the brake indicator light is on. They say I need to change pads and rotors (which I know is not true. even if the rotors are scored, they can be turned quickly with a lathe, which any decent shop should probably have). Fine, you want to give me new rotors, that's cool. The part I'm not cool with is that: 1. they treat me like I'm an idiot (maybe that's what most of their customers are) 2. they charge insane prices and don't admit it, and 3. first they say "audi recommends replacing pads and rotors, that's how all audi brake jobs are done" then they say "oh, actually, audi dealers usually just replace the pads." Uh oh, I actually called the audi dealer. And they quoted me the same price for brake service (yes pads and rotors) as these guys - so why would I go to these guys? I called Sokol over at http://euro-motor-cars.com/ and he gave me a much more reasonable estimate for the same service - $100 cheaper. And he told me the truth: I don't need new rotors, I can get them simply resurfaced if they're really bad. So, at the end of the day, I don't care who looks like who from Dawson's Creek. I just want good HONEST service from a well trained mechanic who doesn't try to BS customers. Looks like I'll be going elsewhere in the future - maybe I can find a place where the mechanics are hot chicks. Yeah, that'll be worth an instant 5 stars :P UPDATE 9/3/2008 (upgraded from 1 star to 3 stars): Aaron, one of the owners of the shop, gave me a call (after reading this review) and we talked about my experience. He was pretty nice on the phone and it's pretty clear these guys do care about customer service. Here's why: 1. They don't treat you like a number and rush you out. RATHER, they take their time with you and make you feel very welcomed. 2. They don't spew out auto terminology at you followed by $$$$$. RATHER, they are open and honest about what your car needs and what it doesn't need. 3. They don't give you a $10 cab refund which only lasts halfway downtown. RATHER, they have a shuttle that takes you from the shop to anywhere in the city and BACK. Sunday 12:30pm: Intersection Folsom/Fremont, the alternator in my 2004 VW Jetta takes its last spin, and kaput there goes my battery with it. After the nice men roll me and my dog, Q, through the intersection to safety, I call for help. My insurance company recommended towing to Advanced Audi VW, and I obliged, crossing my fingers hoping that it was the right decision. I left my keys in the drop-box in what honestly seemed like somewhat of a sketchy area, and got a reassuring, professional call first thing Monday morning. Randy was honest and upfront about what my car needed and what it would cost. At this point I'm stoked that I bought that extended warranty! I even call the VW dealer to confirm how warranties work and am so relieved to hear the reassurance that I have to be covered. Randy's nice voice still makes my heart break when he tells me my extended warranty expired 12 days ago. 12 F'ING DAYS?!!! Ouch that hurt; me and my bank account. Side note- Seriously, go figure..right? I'm convinced manufacturers have this down to a science. That was just too ironic and timely. Luckily my friend's dad was able to get me an alternator at cost and my bank account is grateful that Randy was so cool about it, even if it meant less markup for him. After checking the Yelp ratings and reviews for Advanced Audi/VW, I felt that much more confident that my car was in the right hands and I wasn't getting ripped off. Since my car was towed during a time when they were closed, I took the Muni T line to meet these "hot" men who the rest of you have yelped about...and yep, I'll be going back to Advanced Audi-VW again. Yes, I own a VW. Yes, it's my second one. Yes, I've owned better cars. Yes, I think they put drugs in the upholstery to keep you coming back for more. After my first service, I programmed them into my cell. Which came in handy on the way back from Tahoe. Not even 1/3 of the way down the hill, all of the lights came on on the Terminator's dashboard. Brake light, seatbelt light, some triangle arrow with a circle in it, the center readout flashed the word "Stop" in big red letters, then it said "Brake Failure". I saw my life flash in front of me. I was sad that I never finished that macrame toaster cozy. Then I remembered my cell phone and had the Love of My Life dial Advanced. Snookums: "They probably won't answer" Me: "Yes they will" Snookums: "They probably don't speak english" Me: "Yes they do" Snookums: "They'll probably say they can't help, and we'll have to bring it in. We're going to die" Me:"Just call them" Randy answered right away. Randy speaks English. Snookums:"Hi, my girlfriend brings her car to you. She has a 2001 Passat" Pause. Snookums:"Yeah, Bunny" He looked confused. He told Randy what was happening. Pause. Snookums:"So, we're ok? The brakes aren't failing? Pause. Snookums:"It's just a fuse? You're sure. Thoroughly disappointed. I went in to get an oil change. Just an oil change. Randy was very cool on the phone. However, when I got there, some other dude checked me in. And when I told him the model year of my car (pretty OLD), he started salivating and I could see the dollar signs in his eyes. He was condescending and smarmy and immediately started listing all the things I needed for my car--starting with an 80K mile service. Um, no, my car had nowhere near 80K miles on it. (And yeah, I try to take public transportation when I can.) He was totally deflated when I told him the actual mileage and that I was updated on all service. He literally swallowed his tongue at this point. When I left my car there, I was actually concerned something might go "wrong" with the car in their care, costing much more than an oil change. It was a pleasant surprise that the garage wasn't THAT dishonest, I got a really bad vibe from the guy. When I picked up my car, the same guy had toned down a bit, probably due to my 6'6 husband accompanying me. But he did tell me that the timing belt looked a bit worn. Fair enough. I asked him for a quote. I was strongly leaning against ever patronizing the place again, but with the high Yelp ratings I was considering giving them a second chance. The quote was EXTREMELY HIGH. But his cheap scare tactics of how my car could be ruined if I didn't get it fixed SOON ended the deal. Also, their quote was 4 TIMES MORE than what I eventually paid for the repair. Plus, their prices were not competitive with the dealer (outside SF) I had taken my car to for years until I moved. And I never once worried that something would happen to my can in their care. Oh, and he would barely tell me where they parked my car--which ended up being at a red curb around the corner. Nice. One star...because Randy was very professional when I made my appointment. Took my 2004 VW Passat GLS 4motion here for 3 years and always got great service. I had to stop though when my financial situation became more sensitive. They will tell you very plainly that they are not the cheapest shop in town (Jason, specifically told me so over the phone). They will even give you a list of cheaper shops that they specifically recommend. Again, they will literally send your business elsewhere with no hesitation. How's that for confidence? Here's how they can do that: they're the undisputed experts for the cars they service and they take pride in their work. What they offer is still valuable to people who don't mind paying extra for peace of mind, which it's safe to say there are a LOT of in SF and the Bay Area. Take your car here, pay whatever it costs without batting an eye, and your Audi/VW/Cooper will run forever. On the other hand, if you have a late-life "point A to point B" service sort of vehicle that you don't plan on owning for more than another couple years, taking your car here is probably an irresponsible decision. read more

Time and time again Advanced Autowerks remind me of what a great decision that was. I've done a bunch of work here and they always deliver quality work and straight talk. Today I dropped in with a tail light out. They fixed it in 10 minutes and when I went to go up to pay, they said "you're good. come back when you have a real problem". Awesome. 1. Loved the Shuttle - very convenient! Took a while to get home, but saved me taxi fare! 2. Randy is HOT. No, you don't understand. HOTTTT. 3. He is also NICE! He offered to take a look at my cruise control problem, no charge! 4. He did not "over-recommend" things. I asked him whether it was worthwhile getting the 80 dollar oil change with them, or if I should go with someone cheaper. He gave me pros and cons of both, rather than just, "come to us, they will ruin your car!" I asked about using synthetic oil, and he told me I didn't need it. 5. Again...HOT. I am sure that everyone reading reviews on Auto Repair shops is aware of the worst case scenarios in dealing with car repairs. It is hard to trust that you are getting an accurate and hosest assesment of your vehicles issues. In my recent experience with Advance Autowerks I was amazed at the level of strait forwardness and up front honesty I received. I had a pretty hefty repair bill on my Audi A4 and not only did they tell me what was wrong but they also steered me in the right direction as to what was the most urgent and what the felt could wait. In addition to that I explained that I might be in the market for a trade in or move to a different vehicle type as my son was getting older and we needed more space. Zach was quick to take time to give me his thoughts on what would work best for my situation. I am sure that he is not in the business of helping get people into new cars but the fact that he did not hesitate to give me his professional opinion, regardless of if it was a make and model Advanced Autowerks serviced which it was not, on the best options is a testament to the levels of customer service you will experience. Yes, this place is getting another five star review. And damn it, it's well deserved too. I used to go to the Dealers that shall not be named (cough**ROYAL MOTORS**cough) and always left feeling gypped or ignored AND that I paid inflated prices for service. But these guys are great. Not only does Randy and co run a tight operation, but he is one of the most pleasant, helpful and fair guys to talk to about the car . Case in point, The guys doing my smog check told me I should get my serpentine belt looked at fast, but had no time to do it.. I called up Randy last week and even though he said he was booked for a week, he squeezed me in on emergency basis cause he said I shouldn't be driving around on a cracked belt. The door-to-door shuttle service with Boris is great too. That's service, people. And when I was leaving, Randy said my name correctly and used it when saying goodbye. For that, he gets a star plus. It may seem silly, but that personal touch is great. read more

Really upstanding auto mechanics shop. Their shop is clean and their lobby room offers a fridge full of fancy drinks. What really makes this shop is their people and customer service. My car was hit in an accident near the shop in the late afternoons maybe 20 minutes before closing. I called the shop and Zach, hearing me near tears, promised to stay open long enough to receive my car. He was so reassuring throughout the entire process - they made the whole crisis of an accident that much better. I drive a Volkswagen GTI and prior to this visit I had not known they were a Volkswagen/Audi/BMW specialty auto repair shop. All my repairs were done with genuine VW parts so I had no worries. I would definitely try to bring my car here for even simple things like oil change and check ups! read more
